ESSENDON has received two extra rookie selections from the AFL for its assistance package request.

The AFL Commission met on Monday and decided on the Bombers’ request, which had been in the works with the AFL for months. 

AFL.com.au revealed on Tuesday the Bombers have been given two extra rookie selections for next year, with the picks to be reviewed at the end of next season.

The Bombers had hoped for an extra end of first round selection, and had also pushed for soft cap relief, as part of their discussions, however they were given the extra rookie spots.

The AFL has granted the positions, with the Bombers expected to use their larger list to add more experience to their group, like West Coast did with its extra rookie spots the Eagles were given last year in its assistance package.

Essendon has won two of its past 36 games and won the second wooden spoon in the club's history this year, finishing a game behind fellow struggler Richmond. 

The club sacked coach Brad Scott in late May and replaced him with Dean Solomon for the remainder of the season but unlike arch rival Carlton's renaissance under Josh Fraser, the Bombers' fortunes failed to improve. 

Former Bombers player Mark McVeigh was appointed the club's new senior coach in late August ahead of Essendon legend James Hird, Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham and Adelaide coaching director Murray Davis.
