FREMANTLE defender Brennan Cox is set for Grand Final heartbreak after being left out of the Dockers squad to face Brisbane at the MCG on Saturday. 

And Lions backman Noah Answerth is in a similar situation after being named as an emergency, having recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of the past two finals matches.

Two-time Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale will play, having succeeded in his appeal on Thursday night to have his one-game suspension for striking reduced. Neale was instead fined $10,000 and can take his place in the Lions' Grand Final team. 

If Neale's bid to avoid suspension failed, the Lions would have been forced into a change to their squad, which could have opened the door for Answerth and fellow emergencies Bruce Reville and Cody Curtin. 

Cox trained strongly on Wednesday in Perth to prove his fitness after recovering from a calf injury sustained in round 24, but the Dockers have stuck with the same team that defeated Sydney in last week's preliminary final, including defender Oscar McDonald who loomed as the most likely to make way. 

Veteran midfielder Jaeger O'Meara and small forward Chris Scerri have also been named among Fremantle's emergencies.
