BRISBANE is considering approaching Nathan Buckley to be part of its process to find the club's next head coach.
Chris Fagan's departure last week with a year to run on his contract has left a vacancy at the three-time premiers heading into the 2027 season.
And 33 years after Buckley won the Rising Star Award as a player in his single season at the Brisbane Bears, the Lions are contemplating an approach about him returning to Queensland.
Lions head of football Danny Daly and assistant coach Cam Bruce are also expected to be considered to replace Fagan.
Buckley has this year been part of the process but ultimately missed out on the head coach roles at Tasmania - who selected Ken Hinkley - and North Melbourne, who is expected to unveil Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham as Alastair Clarkson's replacement later this week.
Buckley coached Collingwood for ten seasons between 2012 and 2021, including reaching the 2018 Grand Final. He is currently an assistant coach at Geelong.
Following his one playing season at the Bears, Buckley forged a decorated career at Collingwood and started his time there under the guidance of champion player and coach, Leigh Matthews.
Matthews, who won one premiership at the Magpies as coach and another three at Brisbane, is now on the board at Brisbane and will be part of the process to find the Lions' next coach.
