COLLINGWOOD stars Ben Reid and Luke Ball will have scans in the coming days to determine the extent of injuries suffered during the 60-point loss to Carlton at the MCG on Friday night.

Compounding a horrible night for the Magpies, both players look set for stints on the sidelines after exiting the match during the second quarter.

All Australian Reid left the field late in the first quarter with a quad injury.

He was subbed from the game at the two-minute mark of the second quarter, leaving the inexperienced Lachlan Keeffe as the Magpies' only key defender.

Ball went to ground clutching his right knee after tackling Blue Mitch Robinson at the 31-minute mark of the first quarter and was helped from the ground.

The tough midfielder returned to the action after the first break with his knee strapped.

But after playing the bulk of the quarter severely hindered, Ball went to ground again at the 17-minute mark and had to be carried to the interchange bench, where he spent the remainder of the night.

"We think 'Reidy' has nicked a quad, and we'll find out with scans over the next couple of days," Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said.

"We're not exactly sure what 'Bally' has done.

"We'll have to go and get some scans to find out what structural damage, if any, that he's had.

"But a player like Luke Ball doesn't not play with anything minor, so we'll find out how that's gone."

Buckley refused to use the injuries as an excuse for his team's heavy defeat, despite Magpies players noticeably tiring as the match wore on.

"It was nothing to do with injuries, it was just the run of the game," he said.

"We were well beaten in every facet by a side that was harder, more skillful, played as a team, and were more committed to the contest."
