COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley says he's confused about the AFL's new goal video review system.

The technology was used twice in the Magpies' one-point win over Essendon on Anzac Day at the MCG, with Buckley declaring he was unsure how umpires interpret an inconclusive video review.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the field umpire called for a video review after a contentious shot at goal involving Tyson Goldsack.

Goldsack tried to poke the ball through from point-blank range while being heavily pursued by Dustin Fletcher.

There was doubt over whether the ball hit the post or Fletcher's boot, or neither.

Deliberations lasted around a minute before being deemed inconclusive, and a point was awarded.

The second incident was clearer but in the dying stages of the game when Essendon was in front by five points.

Jarryd Blair kicked a goal, again from point-blank range, and the umpire was unsure whether the ball had come off his knee or boot.

Buckley said after the game there was doubt over how the rule was employed.

"I think initially wasn't it what the goal umpire decided whether it was a goal or a point? And then if it was inconclusive it was going to go back to his decision?" Buckley said.

"I've heard umpires talk recently over the microphone saying the lesser (score), so we go to the point.

"I'm not altogether clear on what the rule is.

"I think it should go back to whatever the goal umpire's decision was initially. If he thinks it was a goal but wants to get it checked, fair enough.

"If he thinks it was a point and wants to get it checked, fair enough.

"If it's inconclusive, back the goal umpire."

Buckley said on a day where "goals were gold" in wet and slippery conditions, the ruling on the Goldsack incident could have been disastrous had the result gone Essendon's way.

"'Goldy' got his foot to it, it didn't hit the post and Fletcher didn't touch it so isn't that a goal?" he said.

"It took a long time to work out that we had to take the lesser of two because they couldn't conclusively say it was a goal.

"I wasn't rapt with that at the time and I probably won't be rapt with it now or in a week's time.

"I would have been even less rapt with it if we had lost by less than a goal.

"The 'Blairy' one was pretty clear."
