SUNDAY'S elimination final between Richmond and Carlton at the MCG is the biggest week one crowd at a League final since 1972, when a top five was introduced.

A monster crowd of more than 94,000 crammed into the ground to watch Richmond's first final in 12 years against its bitter rival.

It eclipses the 91,900 who came to the 1972 qualifying final between Richmond and Collingwood at the MCG and the 90,370 who came to the 2011 elimination final between Carlton and Essendon.

It is also the biggest crowd to attend an AFL match in 2013.
