GEELONG star Steve Johnson has overtaken long-time fantasy kings Dane Swan and Gary Ablett as the most expensive player in NAB AFL Fantasy in 2014.

The three-time premiership-winning Cat will start next season at a price of $641,600, after averaging a competition-leading 118.38 points per game this year.

Collingwood midfielder Swan ($636,600) ranks second, with Gold Coast captain Ablett ($621,200) third and another Magpie, Scott Pendlebury ($611,200), fourth.

Under a shift in pricing, the young guns taken early in the NAB AFL Draft will cost significantly more than in previous years.

No.1 draft pick, Greater Western Sydney big man Tom Boyd, will set coaches back $262,900, and No.2 Josh Kelly $260,200.

By comparison, last year's top pick Lachie Whitfield started at $183,700 this year.

Players selected later in the draft, such as Collingwood's No.77 pick Jonathon Marsh, will be much cheaper. Marsh will be available for $135,500.

In notable positional moves, Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell has been awarded dual position status as a midfielder/defender, having spent much of last season at half-back.

Mitchell's captain Luke Hodge and Sydney Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh have also been classified as midfielder/defenders.

But Essendon's Brendon Goddard, one of the most popular players in the game in 2013 thanks to his dual position status, will be a midfielder only next season.

Coaches will have a starting salary cap of $10 million, up from $9.139 million in 2013.

By pre-registering now, coaches can gain access to the full list of player prices.

The competition will open in full at the end of next month.
