DELISTED Sydney Swans forward Xavier Richards is training with Essendon in a bid to restart his career.

Richards, 23, who played in the Grand Final against the Western Bulldogs, appeared at Bombers training at Tullamarine on Monday.

Coach John Worsfold said last week both Richards and former Brisbane Lion Josh Green were under consideration as delisted free agents.

An AFL spokesman said Richards had been granted permission to train with the Bombers.

Richards, the younger brother of recently retired Swans veteran Ted, who started his career with Essendon, was axed after rejecting a new two-year deal with Sydney last month, and failed to find a new home during the NAB AFL Trade Period.

He played 10 senior games for the Swans in 2016.

Green is also looking for another chance at AFL level after being delisted by the Brisbane Lions following 81 games.

Richards' manager Phil Mullen told AFL.com.au that Essendon had made no commitment.

"They just invited him to train and he will probably spend this week there," Mullen said.

"[We'll] see how it all unfolds and I guess they will make a call from there. It is an opportunity for him to train as well."

Essendon VFL player Ben McNiece will also train with the AFL group alongside rookie candidates Shaun McKernan and Yestin Eades.
