GOLD Coast academy graduate Brad Scheer has penned a one-year contract extension, tying him to the Suns until at least the end of 2019.

The 18-year-old, who was recruited with pick No.67 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, spent most of his junior career playing in the midfield but is eyeing a regular spot in the forward line this season.

Scheer said he was determined to make a name for himself at the Suns.

"I'm thrilled to have re-signed with the Suns, I have been part of the club for the past five years as a member of the talent academy," Scheer told goldcoastfc.com.au on Wednesday night.

"Personally, it was a straightforward decision. I didn't need to think twice, and couldn't wait to sign to stay on the Gold Coast."

Scheer did not take part in the JLT Community Series after contracting a bout of pneumonia ahead of the first pre-season hit-out against the Brisbane Lions last month.

The youngster will make his first appearance with the Suns in this Saturday's NEAFL practice match against Aspley.

"I just want to get my fitness and things back," Scheer said.

"I don't think right now I'm fit enough to play at that senior level. (I've) just been struck down with illness so I just want to work my way in the NEAFL team and hopefully get a gig sometime during the year."

Scheer showed exciting signs during his time in the Suns' academy and averaged 25 possessions in last year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
