MELBOURNE'S Angus Brayshaw "couldn't believe it" when a controversial free kick was paid against him in last Saturday night's two-point loss to Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

The midfielder expressed his frustration at the ruck nomination rule on this week's edition of AFL Exchange.

Brayshaw was penalised for holding opponent Patrick Dangerfield out of the ruck contest, having not realised the Geelong superstar had nominated himself for a ruck contest inside Brayshaw's defensive 50.

"Are we playing under-10s football?" Brayshaw said.

"Any reasonable person watching the game would be thinking: 'How on earth has that been paid?'

"I'm not having a go at the umpire, I just don't understand the rule as a whole."
