SEPTEMBER is a huge month for football competitions around the country. Here is a snapshot of winners from various women's state league competitions across the country.

NSW/ACT

AFL Canberra Women's

  • The award was Tully's third straight best and fairest in the AFL Canberra competition.

AFL Sydney Women's

Best and fairest: Pippa Smyth (Macquarie University) 17 votes, Megan Lawrence (Macquarie University) and Francesca Hocking (Newtown Breakaways) 15

Of note:

  • Smyth was on the Giants' AFLW list in 2018 but wasn't offered a contract for 2019. She responded in style and was the competition's best player.
  • Former Giants rookie Haneen Zreika finished with the same number of votes as Smyth, but was ineligible due to suspension.
  • Laura Russell kicked two bags of seven goals in the final two matches to win the goalkicking award.
Queensland

QWAFL

  • Groves-Little is the youngest ever winner of the QWAFL best and fairest at just 17
  • State under-18 representatives Jacqui Yorston, Belle Dawes, Lauren Bella, Grider and Groves-Little made the team of the year. Dawes cannot be drafted until the end of 2019.
South Australia

SANFLW (played from February-April)

  • Hannah Martin leapfrogged younger sister Rachelle in the final round of the season to win the league's best and fairest.

Adelaide Footy League (played from April-August)

  • Katelyn Rosenzweig was second in the goalkicking after winning the SANFWL goalkicking earlier in the year. She's just 18.
  • State under-18 players Rosenzweig and Rachelle Martin featured in the team of the year.
Tasmania

TSLW

Best and fairest: Maddison Smith (Clarence/North Melbourne AFLW) 14 votes, Nicole Bresnehan (Clarence) 11, Mia King (Launceston) 11

Coach of the year: Craig Grace (Glenorchy)
Of note:

  • Lauren Stevenson, Libby Haines, Elise Barwick, Mia King and Chloe Haines were selected in the team of the year and represented their state in the NAB AFLW Under-18 Championships.
  • North Melbourne recruit Maddison Smith and Carlton rookie Courtney Webb also made the team of the year.
  • Sarah Skinner from Glenorchy polled eight more votes than best and fairest Smith but was ineligible after being suspended earlier in the year.
  • Mia King is not eligible to be drafted until the end of next year but finished equal-second in the best and fairest.
Victoria

VFLW

  • Forwards Hayley Bullas (Essendon) and Sophie Alexander (Collingwood), rucks Rhiannon Watt (Southern Saints) and Alice Edmonds (Richmond) and defender Jayde Van Dyk (Hawthorn) were the non-AFLW players named in the team of the year.
  • Cula-Reid was named coach of the year in her first season, after leading the Magpies to the minor premiership.
Western Australia

WAWFL

Of note:

  • Kira Phillips played for Fremantle's AFLW team in 2017 but didn't get a contract for 2018. Her mammoth 78-goal haul would suggest she's worth another shot in the AFLW.
  • Belinda Smith is looming as the one who got away for Fremantle. Not offered a contract for the 2019 AFLW season, she was recruited by the Western Bulldogs and will be fresh off a stellar WAWFL season.
