ST KILDA has made an approach to Tom Scully's management as the Greater Western Sydney midfielder considers a trade back to Victoria.

Earlier on Friday, AFL.com.au reported Scully had told the Giants of his wish to return to his home state and play for Hawthorn next year.

Saints list manager James Gallagher confirmed they are also interested in 2009's No.1 draft pick.

"We’ve sounded out his management," Gallagher told Macquarie Sports Radio.

"We think Tom would be an absolutely perfect fit for us."

But the Saints are behind "a couple of clubs" in the race for Scully, with the 27-year-old preferring to end up at a club where the flag window is firmly open.

"Tom has made it pretty clear through his management that there are only a couple of clubs he'd be interested in going to and it's those in his opinion that are closest to a premiership," Gallagher said.

"But if that changes, we're certainly open to having a conversation with Tom."

Scully has played 152 games in nine seasons but managed only one in 2018 after fracturing his ankle in round two against Collingwood.

INDICATIVE DRAFT ORDER Your club's picks

The Saints are also highly unlikely to trade their first pick in this year's draft, currently No.4.

And although the club is planning on using that pick, if a big offer came for it the Saints would consider it.

"The expectation at the moment is that we take that to the draft," Gallagher said.

"We'd be silly not to entertain an offer or a deal that could be struck with another club that could be beneficial for both parties, but I don't anticipate that is going to come because the value of that pick is so high."
