HAWTHORN continues to take a cautious approach to star recruit Chad Wingard's calf problem, with the former Power forward again doing little at training on Saturday.

The Hawks' intraclub match is on Wednesday and Wingard also put his hand up to play in the AFLX tournament for Eddie Betts' Team Deadly, which already lost Steven May (hamstring) on Friday.

BEST FORWARDS We rank every club's attack

Wingard barely trained last week and it was much the same in Hawthorn's first session since returning from its annual community camp at Launceston.

Jarman Impey, Conor Nash and Mathew Walker remain on club duties in the Northern Territory until Sunday.

Wingard left the track at one stage and then completed boxing exercises on returning, while his teammates scattered across Waverley Park to do competitive, possession-maintaining kicking drills.

However, fellow high-profile recruit Tom Scully appears to be making encouraging progress from the serious ankle injury that forced him onto the sidelines from round two last season.

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

Scully's session again involved bulk running, but he has clearly ramped up his intensity – and one of the Hawks' medical staff remarked the ex-Giant and Demon was "covering the ground well".

He also took part in basic kicking drills with Grant Birchall (knee) and rookie Will Golds, who was restricted to running after being on the end of a heavy knock in match simulation last week.

All Australian forward Luke Breust and former Sun Jack Scrimshaw were full training participants, but Shaun Burgoyne, Jaeger O'Meara and Ben Stratton were onlookers for much of the session.

Breust, like Wingard and potential skipper Isaac Smith, was selected to play in the AFLX event at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Draftee Jacob Koschitzke completed lap and agility running drills, while Changkuoth Jiath was another on limited duties.

The Hawks' intraclub contest is from 5pm on Wednesday at Waverley Park.
