VETERAN commentator Sandy Roberts has retired from TV commentary.

Roberts, 68, became a household name during a 40-year stint with the Seven Network before crossing to Fox Footy in 2014, spending another five seasons calling football.

He began his TV career in 1973 and hangs up his microphone after a 46-year career calling a host of sports, including 1100 VFL/AFL games.

One of his most memorable moments came in 1993 when a spectator released a pig on to the SCG field. Roberts alerted viewers to the remarkable scene by exclaiming, "There's a pig at full-forward!"

Roberts told Fox Footy he wanted to thank viewers for sharing their lounge rooms with him throughout his career.

"It's an absolute honour to call live sport on TV for a living and to share that excitement with fans. It's now time to hand over the commentary box keys to young guns," he said.

Roberts plans to continue calling football on radio.
