DAYNE Zorko will captain Brisbane this season after the club announced an eight-man leadership group on Thursday that also included gun Fremantle recruit Lachie Neale.

Zorko stood in as skipper for the final 13 games of 2018 after Dayne Beams stepped down, citing mental health issues following the death of his father earlier in the year.

This season, the Lions will be Zorko's team to lead from the start, with three new faces joining him in the leadership group.

Along with Neale, rugged defender Darcy Gardiner and young midfielder Jarrod Berry have been added.

They join established leaders Harris Andrews, Stefan Martin, Ryan Lester and Allen Christensen.

Berry, who has just turned 21 and is about to enter his third season, said "the brotherhood" at Brisbane had made his transition from juniors to the AFL an easy one.

"A lot of guys are from interstate, there's 12 or 15 from Vic Country, a lot of WA boys, a few from SA, a few Queenslanders, that brotherhood holds us in good stead," Berry told AFL.com.au.

"We don't have anyone up here except each other.

"That, and being selfless, is what I've noticed since my first year.

"It's been led by the leaders, they made a decision that that's what we're going to stand for.

"My draft year was pretty blessed to come in and be part of that culture.

"It's been awesome, and I can't speak more highly of what the boys have created."

While Zorko will captain, veteran Luke Hodge will continue to play a mentoring role to the entire leadership group.

Berry was in the midst of an excellent pre-season before he contracted glandular fever that has slowed him down the past few weeks.

Now back training, he says it won't hinder him much longer.

"It's a little bit of a setback but I'm doing things again now and feeling good. I'm looking to get back into training in the next week," he said.
