Eagles' Jack in the box claims Rising Star nomination

Petruccelle puts the jets on Jack Petruccelle blasts away from the pack and races on to kick the goal

WEST Coast may have lost to Port Adelaide by 42 points, but it was the form of a young small forward that caught the eye.

And after a five-goal haul, Jack Petruccelle is the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for round five.

At one point in the rain-sodden affair on Good Friday, Petruccelle had kicked the Eagles' entire score of 14 points. In fact, it took until the 13-minute mark of the third term for another Eagle to join him on the scoreboard.

The 20-year-old had 18 disposals (including 14 kicks), seven marks and three inside 50s and was West Coast's best player in just his eighth game of footy.

"There was a shining light tonight, and it was 'Petch'," West Coast coach Adam Simpson said after the loss.

"That was our only avenue [to goal], which is whilst it is great for him, we like to go through different avenues and not be as predictable as some might think.

"Unfortunately, at the moment if we didn't get it in 'Petch's' hands, we didn't score, which is great for a six- or seven-game player."

Petruccelle was awarded two votes from the coaches in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award.
