MELBOURNE will send co-captain Jack Viney for scans on Thursday after he injured his right shoulder in a heavy hip and shoulder from Tiger Sydney Stack at the MCG on Wednesday night, coach Simon Goodwin says.

Viney was rocked by the bump by Stack in the final quarter of the Anzac Day Eve clash, as the Demons registered their fifth loss of the season and left their finals hopes in serious jeopardy.

"He'll be an assessment tomorrow so we'll have to look at that shoulder and some concussion stuff that we'll have to look at as well," Goodwin said.

"He's pretty tough 'Vines' so we'll see how he pulls up."

The Demons kicked just 42 points for the game and two goals after quarter-time, with the highest-scoring team of 2018 struggling badly in that area this season.

Goodwin said it was frustrating to see his side butcher opportunities going forward.

"We had our opportunities through the middle of the ground, but we couldn't connect with our handball and our kicking," Goodwin said.

"We couldn't either bring the ball to ground in our forward half or we got mopped up at ground ball."

FROM OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT TO IMPOTENT ATTACK Dees' No.1 problem

Young forward Sam Weideman has struggled to impose himself on games in 2019 after a breakout finals performance last year and is one of many Demons down on form.

"Sam's not in super form and clearly as our connection through the middle of the ground improves, Sam will come into the game a little bit more," Goodwin said.

"We're just not giving ourselves really good opportunities forward of centre at the moment and that's a combination of our ball use and our forwards not bringing the ball to ground or holding it in there."

Despite the predicament they find themselves in, the Demons saw some positive signs against the Tigers as they concentrated on the basics.

"We're certainly trying to establish ourselves as a contest-defence based club and for three quarters it was looking like that," Goodwin said.

"The scoring will come as our fundamentals improve with the ball in hand, but fundamentally what we needed to establish was around the contest and defensively and there were signs there tonight that that was coming back.

"Where's the scoring gone? It'll come."

Goodwin can appreciate the impatience of Demons supporters who want to see a drastic turnaround, but the coach said that quick fix was unrealistic.

"I can understand why our members and supporters are disappointed – we're 1-5. No question," Goodwin said.

"But when you're in the position we've been in and playing the way we have been there were some signs tonight that we're coming out of some of that."

Defender Steven May is still up to a month away from a return to the field as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin injury.

"He's progressing well. He's symptom free and doing his rehab well," Goodwin said.

"He's still up to a month or five weeks away. If he keeps progressing like he is, it might be a little bit earlier than that."
