GOLD Coast has opened talks to extend the contracts of its talented draft class from last year, while two emerging Suns also look set to stay at the club.

The Suns landed top-10 trio Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine and Ben King at last year's NAB AFL Draft, while also nabbing Jez McLennan and Caleb Graham later in the piece.

Lukosius and Rankine hail from South Australia while King is a Victorian, but the club has worked to settle them into Queensland before moving to lengthen their stay at the Suns.

NINE THINGS WE LEARNED  Dons face another wasted season

All of last year's draftees are signed on standard two-year contracts through to the end of 2020, but clubs regularly act quickly to lock in their young talent.

Football manager Jon Haines said the Suns were in that mode now.

"The process has been not to worry about contracts initially. It's been to get the boys embedded in the club, make sure they're comfortable and then get them settled, with development plans a part of that," he told AFL.com.au.

"Once we've got to that point the next phase is what are we thinking longer-term contractually. So we're starting those discussions with all those boys at the moment.

"They're progressing at different speeds, but the discussions have all been really positive."

West Australian pair Jack Martin and Callum Ah Chee are out of contract at the end of this season, with discussions on a new deal for Martin not to commence until the second half of the season.

"We're all on the same page. We just want Jack to focus on his footy. He's had his best pre-season, he's really well prepared and he's had some really solid games early," Haines said.

"We'll reconvene at some point through the year to have another discussion and go from there."

MID-SEASON ROOKIE DRAFT Former players, brothers of star on the list

St Kilda is among the clubs which have shown interest in Martin.

However, the Suns look likely to move early on third-year pair Jack Bowes and Ben Ainsworth, who shape as key players in the club's future.

Bowes and Ainsworth, who have both impressed in the midfield this season, are signed through to the end of next year, but Gold Coast appears set to extend the pair's deals.

"They're both boys who have indicated they're keen to stay, so we're working through that at the moment," he said.
