ESSENDON is fearing the worst for Joe Daniher's season after the star forward suffered a suspected re-aggravation of his troublesome groin.

AFL.com.au understands Daniher will miss at least this week's Dreamtime at the 'G clash against Richmond as the club investigates his latest concern.

Daniher trained with teammates in a light session on Tuesday morning before flagging more troubles with the injury that saw him miss 15 matches last season.

Should he require further treatment, it is feared Daniher could miss the remainder of the 2019 season.

The 25-year-old forward carried groin soreness in the early parts of last season before playing three full games in 11 days.

As a result, his condition worsened, and he was ruled out for the rest of the season with osteitis pubis.

After a delayed start to this year's pre-season, Daniher played two JLT Series matches before he was sidelined for the opening month of the season with a separate calf strain.

Daniher played his first match of the year as a controversial late inclusion on Good Friday which cost the club $20,000.

THE LONG VISION Bomber legend on stepping up when it counts

After starring with four goals on Anzac Day and playing Geelong in round seven, Daniher required a rest in round eight against Sydney.

He collected 16 disposals without kicking a major from 84 per cent game time in the Bombers' win over Fremantle on Saturday night.

The latest injury comes just 24 hours after the Bombers ruled out reigning best and fairest Devon Smith for the season as he requires knee surgery.

Should Daniher be ruled out for the season, the Bombers would be able to open up a third selection at next week's Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

The two current selections have been created by Smith's setback and a season-ending ACL reconstruction to developing ruckman Sam Draper.
