Giants are confident free agent Stephen Coniglio will sign a new deal

GREATER Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron is confident star midfielder Stephen Coniglio will re-sign with the club in the next month.

Coniglio will become a restricted free agent at season's end, and while Cameron joked the 25-year-old had signed a five-year deal, he quickly clarified.

BARRETT The 40-year drought Dogs don't want to break

"The dialogue that we're having has been really pleasing. As I said earlier in the year with [recently re-signed midfielder] Josh Kelly, that dialogue was fantastic, and we've seen what Josh has done," Cameron said on AFL360.

"Stephen is the same. I wouldn't be surprised over the next month [if] that comes to fruition.

"He's a loyal person, he's got a great family background, he's been there from the start and I'm really confident that's going to happen."

The Giants vice-captain is also expected to play this weekend despite copping a knock to his knee during a strong Clayton Oliver tackle on Sunday saw him sent to the exercise bike.

He played out the game, but looked restricted at times.

THINGS WE LEARNED 'Walla' needs to get better against the best

"[Coniglio] pulled up pretty well … it was right on his knee bone and clearly, he's so tough. A couple of weeks ago he was playing with a [dislocated] finger and we had to pull him out because he wanted to play," Cameron said.

"He's been fantastic for us. We all know his character, we all know his ability to play both offence and defence and put his head over the footy, it's such a great quality. There's no him putting his hand up to come off, he just wanted to continue playing.

"He'll recover in time for Saturday. He's one of those players you just look at in awe every week."

The Giants will be looking to maintain their position in the top four when they hosts Gold Coast on Saturday.
