GEELONG coach Chris Scott has clarified his allegedly "disrespectful" post-match comments about Brisbane matchwinner Charlie Cameron, insisting he'd be "staggered" if he said anything that undermined the Lion's superb five-goal performance.

Cameron kicked half of the home team's 10 goals in its important one-point win over the Cats in a dramatic top-of-the-table clash at the Gabba on Saturday.

The livewire small forward also collected 17 possessions (eight contested), took four marks (one contested) and had eight score involvements.

However, Scott didn't seem overly impressed with Cameron's efforts when he fronted reporters afterwards.

"Did you think Charlie was the difference today? I thought he was good late (when he) kicked a couple of goals. I don't think he had a huge influence on the game, but that's my initial reaction. I thought he took his chances when they were presented but …," the Cats coach said, prompting howls of indignation from some former players in the media.

On Monday night, Scott asserted he didn't deliberately disrespect Cameron's performance but acknowledged he could have been perceived as "abrupt" during the press conference.

He revealed he'd awarded Cameron three votes in the AFL Coaches' Association Player of the Year Award, behind only Brisbane defender Marcus Adams' five and Cats superstar Patrick Dangerfield's four.

Scott felt Cameron's opponent, small defender Jed Bews, performed "pretty well".

"I might have misrepresented my thoughts – it wouldn't be the first time," he said on AFL 360.

"I gave him three coaches' votes. I thought he was pretty good. I didn't think he was the best player on the ground.

"If it came across as disrespectful that certainly wasn't my intention. He's a brilliant little player …

"I'm just not convinced that it was disrespectful … But it wasn't coming from a bad place, that's for sure. I couldn't think more highly of him – I'd love him in our team …

"I would like to go back and listen to what I said, but I'd be staggered if I said anything to undermine the quality of his performance."

This year Cameron has tallied a career-high 52 goals, including hauls of four, six and five in his past three outings.
