ADAM Tomlinson will play for Melbourne for the next four years after signing with the Demons as an unrestricted free agent on Monday.

Tomlinson played the last of his 140 games for Greater Western Sydney in the Grand Final loss to Richmond.

The 26-year-old is a foundation Giants player and has been at the centre of speculation for many years about a possible return to his home state.

The versatile Tomlinson will join a Melbourne team desperate to bounce back from a horror 2019 that saw it drop from a preliminary final the previous year to 17th on the ladder.

After being drafted with pick No.9 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, he is ranked fifth on the 'games played' list for GWS.

Tomlinson was surprisingly dropped for the start of the Giants' finals series but after being reinstated was influential in their preliminary final victory over Collingwood at the MCG.

The Giants will receive an end of second round compensation pick for losing Tomlinson, currently No.40.

"We’re very excited to add Adam to our list as a free agent – he fills a very important need for our team," Demons general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney told melbournefc.com.au.

"He's played a number of different roles for the Giants, but predominantly what we'e looking for is someone who can run up and down the MCG on the wing.

"Adam is an elite runner and at 194cm, he has the versatility to provide us with a number of options, either forward or back.

"With 140 games experience, including the last four finals series, Adam complements the age and games profile of our list and we think he can have an immediate impact."
