COLLINGWOOD has finalised its restructured coaching panel, which includes recently retired former Geelong and West Coast player Scott Selwood.

Selwood, 29, who left the Cats after four injury-riddled seasons and a total of 169 AFL games, has taken up a role in the Magpies' development academy.

Matthew Boyd, who spent his first two seasons developing the Pies' youngsters and working with the club's VFL team, will step up to take charge of team defence and the backline. The Western Bulldogs 2016 premiership star will attempt to fill the significant hole left by Justin Longmuir, who has been appointed coach of Fremantle.

Garry Hocking, previously the Pies' stoppage coach, will lead the club's VFL program following the departure of Jared Rivers to North Melbourne.

Collingwood football chief Geoff Walsh said Boyd's promotion was a reward for the positive influence he has had at the club.

"Matthew's growth as a coach at Collingwood has been immeasurable. He has genuine care for his colleagues and players and we see him as a natural fit for the assistant coach role," Walsh said.

"We're proud to see him develop within our coaching ranks and we expect him to add great value to Nathan's senior coaching group."

Hocking, who will also enter his third season at the Holden Centre, will return to state-league level after previous coaching experience with WAFL club Peel Thunder and SANFL clubs Port Adelaide and South Adelaide.

"Garry's vast and varied playing and coaching resume makes him a great fit for our VFL program as we have no doubt that the team will be able to learn a lot from him," Walsh said.

"In just two years at the club, Garry's approach to coaching has made him very popular with our players and staff alike and we look forward to him working with players on our AFL and VFL lists."
