NORTH Melbourne has swooped on Greater Western Sydney's Aiden Bonar, picking up the young midfielder in the dying minutes of the Telstra AFL Trade Period.

The Roos finished with Bonar and the Giants' future fourth-round pick in exchange for a future third-round selection.

Bonar, 19, was a first-round selection in 2017 but has struggled to break into a strong Giants' on-field brigade.

AFL.com.au reported back in May Victorian clubs were interested in the Giant, who has played just six games in two years, with two games coming in 2019.

Bonar still had another two years to run on his contract at GWS.

"We're delighted to snare a player of Aiden's talent," North Melbourne coach Rhyce Shaw said.

"At 188cm, he can play as a mid or go forward with great impact. Aiden is a dynamic and super athletic player and he offers us a lot of flexibility.

"There'll definitely be opportunities for Aiden to play, and we are really excited to see what he can bring to the table.

"You cannot pass up on bringing in someone of his skill level and talent, and we will be a better team with him on the list."

Bonar's athleticism is one of his selling points, having finished second in the 20m sprint and first in the vertical standing jump at the 2017 NAB AFL Combine.

GWS has now lost a raft of midfielders to other clubs over the past few years, including Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Taylor Adams, Adam Treloar, Tom Scully, Jack Steele and Adam Tomlinson.

North Melbourne had a relatively quiet trade period, coming from nowhere to sign Bonar while also swapping its first rounder for a second and third-rounder and a future first-rounder with Melbourne.
