BRISBANE hasn't ruled out a late bid to jump back into the opening round of Wednesday night's NAB AFL Draft.

The Lions gave up pick No.16 to Port Adelaide last week in a deal that saw them acquire the Power's first selection next year

At the moment, Brisbane will make its opening pick at No.21 but Lions recruiting manager Stephen Conole told AFL.com.au's Draft Night Countdown that might change.

"There's a chance we might jump back into the first round somewhere if an opening's there," Conole said.

"Otherwise, we'll see what comes through and wait until night two."

Conole explained the rationale behind the trade with Port.

"We thought it was a pretty even group. We've got a group of players there that we like. We're hopeful that a couple might get through," Conole said.

"We also realise that the way the draft is now, with having two future firsts, if something does open up, we've certainly got some ability to get back in."

Conole was asked if Jay Rantall, Cooper Stephens and Trent Rivers were in the mix with that No.21 pick.

"I think so. Those three boys, if they don't go in the first night, will all be there around the early part of night two," Conole said.

Rantall is a midfielder who set a record in the 2km time trial at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, finishing it in 5:50, Stephens is a big-bodied onballer whose year was ruined by a broken leg and Rivers is a rebounding backman.

Meanwhile, Brisbane has announced a contract extension for untried midfielder Ely Smith until the end of 2022.

The 19-year-old was taken at pick No.21 in last year's draft.

"It's a great feeling knowing that I'll be part of this club for another few years," he said.

"It's been a learning curve; knowing how to prepare correctly and the craft work required, but I've really enjoyed my time so far."
