So who gets the nod? Who's on the bench? Who misses out?

Here's how our reporters see your club's line-up for the opening round next season.

ADELAIDE

The most contentious call was starting Bryce Gibbs across half-back. He's a great ball-user but doesn't have the leg speed to play in a midfield that's lacking pace already. Brodie Smith and Wayne Milera add a different dimension to the midfield. Elliott Himmelberg edges out Port Adelaide recruit Billy Frampton for the forward/ruck role, while second-year small forward Ned McHenry is a strong chance to debut in round one. Experienced key back Kyle Hartigan gets the nod over No.6 overall draft pick Fischer McAsey. Ex-Collingwood forward Ben Crocker, picked up in the rookie draft, will also be close to selection. – Lee Gaskin

BRISBANE

Gone with very much the same team that played the majority of 2019. Providing they do everything right through pre-season, those players deserve the first opportunity after what they produced last season. Luke Hodge's retirement opens up a spot in the backline and Callum Ah Chee comes right in, providing the Lions with the speed they crave. A few players have a fight on their hands to keep their spot – Alex Witherden, Cam Rayner and Allen Christensen are on that list - with recruits Grant Birchall and Cam Ellis-Yolmen (pictured together below) waiting in the wings. Cedric Cox and Rhys Mathieson are very unlucky, while youngsters Ely Smith, Tom Berry, Brandon Starcevich and Jack Payne could be quick inclusions if form or injury allows them. – Michael Whiting

CARLTON

The Blues suddenly have depth across the board, which is important for young coach David Teague. A developing midfield group now has Jack Newnes and Sam Philp vying for positions, while Lochie O'Brien, Paddy Dow and Liam Stocker will likely start the year in reserve to experienced trio Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow. There are question marks over the fitness of attacking duo Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, though Levi Casboult will provide handy depth after a career-best season last year. Meanwhile, the lack of speed and class through the forward line has been addressed via the recruitment of Jack Martin (pictured below) and Eddie Betts. The club's first draft pick, Brodie Kemp, is likely to start his Carlton career down back. However, the powerful 193cm prospect sees himself as a big-bodied midfielder in time. – Riley Beveridge

COLLINGWOOD

The Pies' best 22 for round one again looks a formidable combination, particularly if star playmaker Dayne Beams recovers well from his injury and mental health issues. Mason Cox (pictured below) is set to reassert himself at the expense of the oft-injured Ben Reid but could also come under pressure from ex-Swans ruckman/forward Darcy Cameron. It's unclear at this stage whether Tom Langdon will have enough match fitness after his season-ending knee surgery so we've left him out, while fellow defender Levi Greenwood is likely to miss the bulk of the season after rupturing his ACL in the qualifying final, although he's already back running so anything's possible. The Pies boast a sturdy, versatile backline but are light on for key defensive depth, which makes delisted veteran Lynden Dunn all but certain to be given a lifeline via the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP). – Ben Collins

ESSENDON

Essendon will be banking on a better run with injury to power it up the ladder next year. In the end, the Bombers didn't lose any players through the trade period, and those they gained - Tom Cutler (from Brisbane) and Andrew Phillips (Carlton) - will be squad players rather than walk-up starts next year. All of the Bombers' national draftees are also likely to take time to crack senior selection, although former Roo Mitch Hibberd could be a chance. The Bombers have plenty of cover across half-back, and although Brandon Zerk-Thatcher isn't in this line-up, expect to see him plenty next year. David Zaharakis' form dipped last season, even seeing the veteran shifted to half-back at different stages, and the likes of Dylan Clarke, Brayden Ham and Kyle Langford will be gunning for his spot, as well as Jacob Townsend, who has been earmarked for a midfield role at his third club. The Bombers have little ready-to-go key forward depth so will be hopeful Joe Daniher can get back to full fitness. – Callum Twomey

DRAFT TRACKER Every pick, every player

FREMANTLE

Expect new coach Justin Longmuir's emphasis on skills to see No.7 draft pick Hayden Young selected for round one, with No.8 pick Caleb Serong unlucky to miss. No.9 pick Liam Henry is still on the comeback from his knee injury and faces a delayed pre-season, but his pace and goal sense will be massive assets when his time comes. The Dockers won't take any risks with star defender Alex Pearce, who won't be back training until late February after more ankle surgery, while recruits Blake Acres (St Kilda) and James Aish (Collingwood) should slot straight in for Freo's new era. - Chris Correia

GEELONG

Tim Kelly's off-season departure to West Coast leaves a massive hole in the midfield, but the Cats will be banking on recruit Jack Steven (pictured below) recapturing the form that saw him win four best and fairests at St Kilda. There is no room for the Cats' other acquisition in the Telstra AFL Trade Period with former Crow Josh Jenkins behind Esava Ratugolea and Rhys Stanley in the pecking order. Gary Rohan is another unlucky omission, but the coaching staff love Tom Atkins' tackling pressure and Quinton Narkle's ability to go through the midfield gives him the nod over the former Swan. The Cats have plenty of options waiting in the wings with Charlie Constable, Sam Menegola and Jed Bews all on the cusp, while Nakia Cockatoo will be tough to leave out if he completes an injury-free pre-season, but that's a big if– Ben Sutton

GOLD COAST

Rory Thompson's return from an ACL immediately solidifies the backline. Sam Collins could easily squeeze in as his key defensive partner, but Charlie Ballard and Jack Lukosius developed nicely last year and should get the first opportunity. Brandon Ellis adds much-needed outside run, while Wil Powell is a nice complement on the other wing. The Suns are loaded for inside midfield options, with No.1 draft pick Matt Rowell an exciting addition and Hugh Greenwood (pictured below) adding versatility as a mid-forward. A full pre-season should see Izak Rankine add some spark to the forward line, while we've rewarded the 2019 form of Darcy Macpherson and Sam Day to give them the nod over Sean Lemmens and Peter Wright respectively. – Michael Whiting

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

Former co-captain Callan Ward is the biggest name missing as he works his way back from an ACL, while we went with Zac Langdon over Brent Daniels, Daniel Lloyd and Bobby Hill for the small forward spot based on his scoring ability. Highly rated draftee Tom Green was considered but Jackson Hately and Jye Caldwell deserve their positions in the midfield rotation, and Shane Mumford was given the No.1 ruck role ahead of Sam Jacobs because he'll be fresh and ready to go. Aiden Corr is named as the third tall defender, but Adam Kennedy or Isaac Cumming could easily have slotted in if we'd gone smaller. New skipper Stephen Coniglio goes back into the middle with Tim Taranto to start forward for his marking ability. – Adam Curley

HAWTHORN

Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell is back after a broken leg cost him all of 2019, while ex-Demon Sam Frost slots straight into the Hawks' defence. Michael Hartley is backline depth at this stage. Jarman Impey's ACL setback is why he's not in this side. Ben McEvoy might end up being the starting ruckman again by round one but Hawthorn keeps insisting his stint at centre half-back wasn't just an experiment. Jon Ceglar assumes the No.1 role in that scenario, and Jon Patton fits somewhere in the back-up ruck equation, too. Ollie Hanrahan narrowly wins the small forward spot ahead of Paul Puopolo – it could easily be the opposite – but that's contingent on the nine-gamer's defensive pressure spiking in the pre-season. Shaun Burgoyne and captain Ben Stratton could come under serious pressure, especially once Impey is fit again. Tim O'Brien is unlucky, while Darren Minchington is training with the Hawks in the hope of snatching the last list berth. – Marc McGowan

MELBOURNE

Recruits Ed Langdon (pictured below) and Adam Tomlinson assume wing roles, while first-round draft pick Kozzy Pickett edges out Jay Lockhart to be the small forward but this may be a bit premature. Oscar McDonald is better suited to playing on the second-best tall forward and wins a berth over Harry Petty and Marty Hore. Alex Neal-Bullen had an awful 2019 but is an endurance and pressure specialist and a best-22 staple when in form. Mitch Hannan and Tom Sparrow are around the mark, and Joel Smith and Aaron vandenBerg will have roles to play after neither appeared this year because of injury. Mitch Brown could be the third tall forward, if the Demons opt for a bigger frontline. Harley Bennell is training with Melbourne and could be a valuable addition via the pre-season supplemental selection period. – Marc McGowan

NORTH MELBOURNE

This squad is far from set, starting with the key defensive posts. Majak Daw was good in 2018 before serious injuries sidelined him for all bar four VFL games this year, while Josh Walker joins as a delisted free agent. Sam Durdin is right in the thick of that race, Ben McKay will try to put himself back in it, and Jamie Macmillan is another option if the Roos prefer a different type. Ben Jacobs, Aaron Hall and Dom Tyson all had wretched 2019 campaigns for varying reasons. Jed Anderson and Bailey Scott could force their way in on pre-season form, and Will Walker (after a season out with injury), Paul Ahern, Tom Murphy, Kyron Hayden and Aiden Bonar are wildcards. Ed Vickers-Willis' ACL recovery leaves him out. – Marc McGowan

PORT ADELAIDE

The Power are more than happy to give youngsters a chance, as they did with Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma last season. Forward Miles Bergman is an exciting prospect and should be in line for a round one debut. It was a tough call between veteran Justin Westhoff and Todd Marshall, but Westhoff's experience gave him the edge. Jack Watts will go close to unseating Joel Garner for a defensive role, while Willem Drew will be coming back from foot surgery, which opens the door for Sam Powell-Pepper to start in the side. The Power played two rucks a lot last season, but Scott Lycett plays his best as the lead ruckman and deserves first crack. – Lee Gaskin

RICHMOND

Two premiership players – Nathan Broad and Liam Baker – along with Gold Coast-bound Brandon Ellis miss out on the side, allowing for the inclusions of Alex Rance, Jack Graham and Sydney Stack. It's a tough call. The Tigers love what the dour Broad brings to the side, while Baker's enthusiasm is second to none. There's certainly no guarantee Jack Higgins will be right to go in round one; he is still on a part-time program after two operations for a bleed on his brain. ST KILDA

A lot of changes for the Saints from their round 23 line-up due to the number of ready-made players recruited. All five make the cut, meaning Shane Savage and Jack Lonie are the unluckiest of the 2019 Saints and just miss out. Any injuries would mean the duo are into the side. If Dylan Roberton is match-fit by round one, he is straight into the side, but at the start of pre-season there are still too many unknowns over his heart condition. It's a very different line-up forward of centre, with a brand new full-forward line. – Sarah Black

SYDNEY

The biggest move we've made with this new-look Swans outfit is using Sam Reid as a third tall defender. This gives youngster Tom McCartin a decent run next to Lance Franklin and Nick Blakey inside 50, and while he's been solid as a forward, Reid's marking ability is more valuable in the back half. Lewis Melican was considered but he misses out. We think Sam Gray and Lewis Taylor can add something at ground level inside 50, which gives Tom Papley more midfield time, while Isaac Heeney will split his time between deep forward and on the ball. Callum Mills stays in defence for now. – Adam Curley

WEST COAST

The Eagles are pretty settled, apart from the injection of former Geelong star Tim Kelly (pictured below) into the midfield. He effectively takes Chris Masten's spot, although they are playing slightly different roles. All-Australian defender Jeremy McGovern will have a disrupted pre-season after having heel surgery, but he's expected to be right for round one. WESTERN BULLDOGS

This Dogs team was extremely tough to pick, and some established names missed the cut. Matt Suckling, Mitch Wallis, Jackson Trengove and Zaine Cordy could all fit into the 22, along with Bailey Williams, Lin Jong and Billy Gowers. Gun recruit Alex Keath slots into the key back role with Easton Wood, allowing Jason Johannisen and Hayden Crozier to play tall and attack from the deck.
