Andrew McKay in action for the Blues in 2001

THE SON of Carlton great Andrew McKay has emerged as a draft prospect for the Blues in 2020.

Charlie McKay's improvement in recent months has caught the attention of recruiters as he pushes his case for this year's NAB AFL Draft intake.

The 186cm midfielder impressed in the Sandringham Dragons' pre-season after initially missing out on Vic Metro's state academy program.

However the 17-year-old, whose father played 244 games for the Blues including their 1995 flag, trained with the Blues over summer and is on the club's radar.

The NAB League has been postponed until at least May 31 as part of the fallout of the spread of the coronavirus but McKay's development has caught the eye.

"From November until now the penny dropped for him, and he did some time at Carlton as part of its father-son Academy," said Dragons talent manager Mark Wheeler.

"He's definitely going to be a starting inside midfielder, nobody can tackle him. He can play forward too, but I think he's probably better as a defender. He can play that role better and as a third defender or lock-down backman.

He's strong overhead, and he's like his old man – tough as nails. He's one of our most improved players.

Andrew McKay followed his career at Carlton with a stint as the Blues' football manager, until he departed at the end of 2018 after seven seasons at the helm.

McKay's daughter, and Charlie's sister, Abbie became the first ever father-daughter recruit when she was drafted by the Blues in 2018.

His is not the only famous Carlton name up for grabs via this year's draft, with Tom Silvagni (son of Stephen), Mackenzie Hogg (son of Matthew) and Tom Gleeson (son of Adrian) all eligible to join the club under the father-son rule.
