12pm AEST – Round 21, 2016: Essendon 11.9 (75) defeated Gold Coast 9.15 (69)

A depleted Essendon side full of top-up players trailed by seven points at three-quarter time, only to start the final term with four straight majors to get the match back on its terms. That's not to say Gold Coast didn't have its opportunity to secure victory. The Suns kicked nine consecutive behinds on either side of three-quarter time to blow their chances.

This was a genuine shootout, with 32 goals kicked before three-quarter time. North Melbourne fought hard, narrowing the margin to seven points in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough.

4.40pm AEST – Round 1, 2011: Fremantle 13.16 (94) defeated Brisbane 14.8 (92)

How did Fremantle engineer this round one comeback back in 2011? Michael Walters came up clutch when it mattered, nailing the winning goal from the boundary with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

12pm AEST – Round 11, 2018: GWS 14.13 (97) defeated Adelaide 11.15 (81)

Two goals in a minute actually had Adelaide in front midway through the final quarter of this clash back in 2018, before Greater Western Sydney ran rampant on enemy territory. The Giants booted the final three goals in quick succession to reclaim both the lead and the momentum, with two decisive Jeremy Cameron majors proving the ultimate difference.

Stats stars: Dylan Shiel (29 disposals, one goal), Stephen Coniglio (24 disposals, two goals), Bryce Gibbs (36 disposals, nine clearances), Matt Crouch (36 disposals, seven clearances)

Talk about surviving by the skin of your teeth. Melbourne led by 38 points midway through the final quarter, before Hawthorn kicked six unanswered goals in the space of 12 minutes to level the scores in the dying stages. Just when it looked as though the Demons were done, Brad Green saved his side's blushes with a calm set-shot with just over a minute to go.

4.40pm AEST – Round 13, 2017: Sydney 12.8 (80) defeated Richmond 10.11 (71)

Richmond led by 15 points early in the last quarter and looked to have the match on its terms, only for Sydney to kick five of the last six goals and storm home. Josh Kennedy was heroic in the final stages as the Swans edged ahead, before Gary Rohan's clever snap with just 10 seconds on the clock sealed the deal amid a frantic finish at the MCG.

3pm AEST – Round 17, 2012: Carlton 16.6 (102) defeated Western Bulldogs 12.12 (84)

Missing superstar Chris Judd through suspension, Carlton looked on the ropes when it found itself five points down to the Western Bulldogs at three-quarter time. But a six-goal final term was enough to fire the Blues home. Eddie Betts was the hero in the last quarter, booting two crucial goals, while Levi Casboult performed admirably in the ruck in his debut.

Stats stars: Brock McLean (29 disposals, six tackles), Andrew Collins (21 disposals, three goals), Tom Liberatore (28 disposals, 10 clearances), Luke Dahlhaus (11 disposals, four goals)

5.20pm AEST – Round 10, 2014: Collingwood 17.7 (109) defeated West Coast 15.11 (101)

Despite trailing by six points at three-quarter time, Collingwood was the beneficiaries of a final quarter shootout back in 2014. The two sides traded 10 goals in the final term as the lead changed hands three times in a matter of minutes, before the Pies eventually took control thanks to the work of midfield dynamos Scott Pendlebury and Dayne Beams.

Stats stars: Scott Pendlebury (32 disposals, one goal), Dayne Beams (31 disposals, two goals), Matt Priddis (35 disposals, two goals), Andrew Gaff (26 disposals, nine marks)
