DESPITE not having lost a game to Melbourne in their past nine encounters, Collingwood won't be underestimating the Demons when the two sides meet in Monday's Queen's Birthday clash.

Under the guidance of Paul Roos, Melbourne has taken significant steps this season.

The past month has been impressive with wins over Adelaide and Richmond, and last week the Demons were fiercely competitive against ladder leaders Port Adelaide.

Collingwood's director of football Rodney Eade said the Pies would not be taking Melbourne lightly.

"They're playing very well," Eade said on Sunday morning.

"Last week they pushed the top side until the last 10 minutes of the game. They've got a definite game-plan … and they've got a lot of confidence and belief in that."

The Pies' midfield will be bolstered by the returns of experienced players Luke Ball (calf) and Dane Swan (jarred heel), who were both sidelined last week with injury.

"Obviously Bally and Swanny will add a bit," Eade said.

"It's good to see (them back) - they needed a bit of break last week, hopefully they can perform well tomorrow."

With Jarrod Witts and Jesse White combining well in the ruck against St Kilda last round, Brodie Grundy has been unable to regain his spot in the senior side after being a late withdrawal due to a back complaint.

The emerging ruckman had played every game this season until round 11, and now will have to fight his way back into the side.

"It's just unfortunate for him, but he's only a young lad - he'll have to work hard to get back in," Eade said.

The Magpies held a light training session on Sunday morning, with most players practicing their shots on goal ahead of Monday's clash.
