COLLINGWOOD has announced a media conference for 2.30pm on Wednesday at which premiership captain Nick Maxwell is expected to announce his retirement.

Maxwell hurt his ankle on Sunday against Essendon in his 208th game and had scans earlier in the week.

The 31-year-old was due to meet with a specialist on Wednesday morning but Fairfax radio reported on Tuesday night that the Magpie veteran was expected to retire.

Maxwell was succeeded as captain at the beginning of 2014 by Scott Pendlebury after he led the club for 104 games as skipper.

He began 2014 in great form across half-back before a calf injury suffered in round 11 against St Kilda forced him out until last week.

Maxwell led the Magpies to the 2010 flag and was named as an All Australian in 2009, his first year as captain.
