VICTORIAN clubs could yet play in South Australia this season despite the SA Government's border opening on July 20 excluding Victorians from direct entry.

But the Queensland Government's decision from July 3 to force travellers from Victoria to quarantine in a hotel for 14 days at their own expense has added another complication to the AFL's fixturing department.

With quarantine hubs again on the AFL's agenda as Victoria's COVID-19 cases continue to rise, SA Sports Minister Corey Wingard has offered renewed hope that his state can be part of the solution.

THE WINNER IS... SYDNEY NSW likely to host next hub

Geelong and Collingwood were already headed to Western Australia after round six and will be required to quarantine for 14 days but can train and play each other in that time.

Wingard has left the door ajar for Victorian teams such as the Cats and Magpies to then return home via South Australia, having already served a quarantine period in WA

"That's something that (SA) Health would be very keen to work through with the AFL," Wingard told SEN radio.

"So, if the suggestion is they (Victorian teams) head to WA and play out of a bubble there and quarantine in a bubble in WA before coming through Adelaide, that's something that Health would have a look at.

"That could be something that could potentially be on the cards."

Adelaide and Port Adelaide remain in a Queensland hub with Fremantle and West Coast, and are playing matches against Brisbane and Gold Coast.

They would be able to enter SA but the AFL's preference is for every club to play the others once, so that won't be of benefit at this stage.

Sydney and Greater Western Sydney would also be able to fly in and out of SA for matches, so long as they aren't travelling after playing in Victoria.

It would be the same story in the case of, say, Gold Coast playing Geelong at GMHBA Stadium this weekend.

"We understand (Victoria's) still got some tough times ahead and they're doing all the work they can to get on top of it," Wingard said.

"But given the work South Australians have done … to make sure we're in a good position, we want to make sure we have the focus on the health and safety of South Australians at the forefront."

SA remains open to hosting an AFL quarantine hub, under strict rules and regulations, and Wingard was hopeful of having 50 per cent capacity at Adelaide Oval once the borders open.

On Tuesday afternoon, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that from midday on Friday, July 3, all travellers from Victoria would not be allowed entry to the state unless they quarantined in a hotel for 14 days at their own expense.

The Queensland borders will open to travellers from all other states from Friday, July 10.

The decision effectively brings Queensland in line with Western Australia in its treatment of travellers from Victoria, but complicates matters for the Lions and Suns who will have already played the four teams from SA and WA by the end of round five.
