PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has invited his coaching staff around for dinner and to watch Friday night's semi-final as they wait to find out their preliminary final opponent.

Reigning premier Richmond and St Kilda will battle it out at Metricon Stadium for the right to meet the Power for a Grand Final spot.

Port forwards coach Nathan Bassett will be one of those huddled around the coach's TV.

FINALS PREDICTOR Who will win the 2020 premiership?

"I think a few of us coaches are going around to Ken's tonight, so it'll be a good experience to watch a game together," Bassett said.

"We're usually travelling interstate to watch it, but we'll do that – just a couple of us tonight – and the rest of the afternoon the players are off playing golf.

"I'm not sure (Ken)'s much of a cook – I think Donna does all the cooking. I've heard pizza is on the go. Pizza and Coke Zeros."

Bassett said "coach connection" was every bit as important as player chemistry, even if it will be difficult to pick up too much of the Tigers' and Saints' tactics on the small screen.

Xavier Duursma completed non-contact training on Friday as he recovers from concussion suffered in an aerial contest with Geelong's Mark Blicavs.

Todd Marshall (shoulder) and Brad Ebert (managed) didn't train at all, while veteran Robbie Gray had a lighter session, but Bassett expected all of them to be ready for the preliminary final.

So does Bassett have a preference for which of Richmond or St Kilda advances?

"There are some similarities, with some little differences between each team," he said.

"I think Richmond's been doing what they've been doing for a long period of time and are quite consistent in how they play, and St Kilda's had a great little jump this year in their performance.

"Both sides present challenges."

In a boost for the preliminary final, the South Australian Government has approved there to be up to 27,000 fans for the match at Adelaide Oval.
