COLLINGWOOD young gun Callum Brown backed up last week’s perfect game with another nine votes against Geelong on Saturday to take an early outright lead in the VFL Coaches Player of the Year award.

Brown had 32 disposals in the win over Box Hill Hawks and again starred with 27 touches and 11 tackles as the Magpies defeated the Cats at AIA Centre.

Another of last week’s 10-votegetters, Carlton’s Paddy Dow, also continued his great start to the year, polling eight votes for his 30 disposals and two goals in the Blues’ big win over the Hawks, while his teammate Will Hayes grabbed nine to move into a share of third spot on 15.

Five players were unanimously judged best-on-ground by the coaches, with the most impressive of those being Essendon skipper Joe Atley, who had 28 touches and eight tackles to get the 10 despite his Bombers losing a thriller to Casey Demons.

Brisbane Lion Kai Lohmann and Footscray’s Lachlan McNeil each polled 10s for their five-goal efforts, Coburg key defender Jack Maibaum started his season in style with 18 disposals and eight marks and highly-rated Sandringham youngster Marcus Windhager was best-on-ground in just his second Smithy’s VFL game.

Brown and Hayes’ nine-vote efforts were matched by Southport pair Jacob Dawson and Jacob Townsend and Gold Coast matchwinner Malcolm Rosas.

As with the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year, the VFL award is voted on by the coaches of each club after every game.

The coaches are awarding 5-4-3-2-1 to their best players in the game from either team, with those votes collated and revealed each week on vfl.com.au.

A total of 47 players attracted the coaches’ attention in Round 2, making it 115 to have polled already this season.
