IT WAS a record-breaking weekend in the rebel VFLW qualifying and elimination finals last weekend, with no fewer than 24 marks being smashed across the three matches played on the long weekend.
And it was Essendon and the Casey Demons who were responsible for most of them – in fact a scarcely believable 11 records were broken by each of the second semi-final qualifiers in their wins over Hawthorn and Collingwood respectively.
The Bombers squared their win-loss records overall, in the finals and against the Hawks while beating the brown and gold at Windy Hill for the first time by inflicting the visitors’ first defeat in finals football, with the domination of the victory being shown in the fact it was Essendon’s highest score and biggest win against Hawthorn.
It was also the lowest score the Hawks have kicked in their VFLW history (as well as of course against Essendon), their biggest VFLW loss and the highest score they have conceded in finals football.
The Demons banked their first finals victory after bowing out at the same stage on debut last year, knocking the Magpies over at Casey Fields for the first time in four attempts, squaring the visitors’ win-loss record in minor finals.
Casey kicked its highest score in finals football and conceded its lowest, its highest score and biggest win against Collingwood, while the Magpies had their lowest score against the Demons and in finals and its biggest loss and highest score conceded at the business end of the season.
The rebel VFLW finals series continues on Sunday with two huge semi-finals, starting with the second semi between Essendon and Casey Demons at Windy Hill at 11.05am three weeks after the Bombers won a thriller by six points at the same venue, with Hawthorn to use its double chance in the first semi against the Southern Saints at Box Hill City Oval from 1.05pm.
Both matches will be streamed live on AFL.com.au starting five minutes before the respective bounces, with the second semi-final also able to be heard on www.warfradio.com from 10am.
