A TOTAL of 48 AFL-listed players will line up in Friday’s pair of Smithy’s VFL arch-rival practice matches across two states, giving supporters a terrific look at the early health of their teams in 2023.

Carlton hosts Collingwood at Ikon Park at 2pm on Friday, with Sydney welcoming Brisbane Lions to Tramway Oval outside the SCG at 3pm in a match that has been shortened to three periods.

The Blues have put forward 15 players on their AFL list among the 33 they have named to take on the Magpies, including draftees Jaxon Binns and Harry Lemmey, supplementary selection period additions Alex Cincotta and Hudson O’Keeffe, ruckman Marc Pittonet, key defenders Lachie Plowman and Sam Durdin and midfielder Matt Kennedy, while big-name recruit Ben Ronke will also play.

The Magpies have 12 AFL-listers, with fans to get their first look at draftees Ed Allan, Jakob Ryan and mature-age Wangaratta flyer Joe Richards, plus SSP additions Oleg Markov and Oscar Steene, while luckless father-son Will Kelly, highly-rated youngster Reef McInnes, Trent Bianco and VFL recruit Jedd Longmire, the nephew of Sydney coach John, have also been named.

The Swans have selected nine AFL-listed players, led by dashing half-back Nick Blakey on the comeback trail from glandular fever, fellow Grand Final player Hayden McLean, VFL best-and-fairest Will Gould and draftees Cooper Vickery, Caleb Mitchell and Cameron Owen, plus Indhi Kirk, the son of club great Brett, and Tom Longmire, son of John and cousin of Jedd.

The Lions are set to field 12 from the AFL list, headed by star midfielder Jarryd Lyons, ball magnet Rhys Mathieson, key defender Ryan Lester, mid-forward Nakia Cockatoo, off-season arrival Darragh Joyce, Lions Academy recruit Shadeau Brain and VFL brother signings Kyle Dunkley and Lockie Rayner.

Entry to both matches is free and open to the public.
