The teams for Round 14 of the rebel VFLW.

The finals have come early with nine sides vying for a place in the top-six in the final round and Box Hill Hawks and Southern Saints have each rushed experienced players back into their teams for Saturday’s do-or-die showdown at Box Hill City Oval, although the Hawks have suffered one major blow.

The tight nature of the competition means the winner of this 4 v 5 clash could claim the minor premiership, but the loser will almost certainly be planning their Mad Monday costumes, with both the seventh and eighth-placed Essendon and Carlton expected to win and leapfrog them.

The Hawks have called on utility Jess Trend for the contest, while the Saints have recalled the second most experienced player in the competition in Bec Neaves, alongside a former Hawk in Kim Ebb.

However, Box Hill Hawks star Maddie Boyd will miss the match after being added to St Kilda's AFLW list for the upcoming season.

The equation is the same for Williamstown and Geelong in Saturday’s 3 v 6 contest at DSV Stadium, with the winner possibly sealing a double chance and the loser likely to miss out altogether.

The Seagulls have rushed back Eliza Straford, Mikayla Meyer and Zoe Day from injury, while the Cats have recalled Breanna Beckley and Mia Walton as they try to save a season that had them on top of the ladder less than a month ago.

Ninth-placed North Melbourne needs a huge win to give itself the chance of a maiden finals appearance when it takes on second-placed Collingwood at Arden Street Oval on Saturday. The rough number is 46 points to overtake the Magpies on percentage to tip them out of the finals.

The Kangaroos will be without Jen Guy, who has been released to play for the Tasmanian State League against the QAFL, but Madisen Maguire, Brooke Slaney and four-game Western Bulldog Paige Ryan will all strengthen the line-up.

Collingwood has also plumped for experience, with ruck Rene Caris, Nicola Weston and Amy Kane coming into the team.

Essendon needs only to beat the Western Bulldogs to regain its top six place (barring two draws from the teams above them), with Jenna Richardson back in the team to help the Bombers do so. The Bulldogs have given a debut to Darwin Buffettes ruck Molly Althouse and recalled Mikayla Barnes and Jaimi Paten among four changes.

Likewise, Carlton’s fate is in its own hands as it seeks to make the finals for the first time, with Madison Katerelos, who played twice for the Bulldogs last year, to make her Blues debut against Darebin in place of Ava Jordan, who returns to the Northern Knights.

The Falcons also lose a youngster back to the Knights in Lauren Jatczak, with the experienced Bec Goring heading the inclusions.

Casey Demons and Port Melbourne have gone the other way, wielding the axe on experienced players for their game, which has been moved to be played at Trevor Barker Beach Oval from 3:00pm.

The Demons’ ladder position can’t change, but it is a possible minor premiership-securing contest for the Borough.

The Borough left out Eliza Morrison, Bella Stutt and ruck Kate Dudley in favour of Kate Adams and Maddi Shaw among four changes, while the Demons dropped Ali Dowler and Kara Henderson but regained Emma Horne, Belinda Woolcock and Steph Rummel among their four changes.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will be taking the Williamstown vs Geelong Cats game at DSV Stadium.
