THE TOP eight picks in the 2026 Telstra AFL Draft are locked in - at least for now.

The end of the home and away season means the teams that missed finals know where they sit at the top end of the draft, but there could still be changes ahead of what's set to be a massive trade and free agency period.

The impending departure of Ben King from Gold Coast, likely to Hawthorn, is expected to net the Suns band one free agency compensation. 

Despite handing its first-round pick (which is currently pick No.6 for finishing 13th) to Melbourne in the Christian Petracca trade last year, the Suns would still get a first-round pick for King if it triggers band one compensation, which would net them pick No.7.

Zak Butters' departure from Port Adelaide could also shake up the top end of the draft, although the Power have said they plan to match a bid on the restricted free agent and force a trade.

Band one free agency compensation would net the Power pick No.5 to go with the pick No.4 they already hold for finishing 15th, but they would have their eyes on multiple top picks in a trade with whichever club wins the race for Butters.

Port needs high draft picks to match a bid on Academy-tied potential No.1 selection Dougie Cochrane, and the Power will receive a 10 per cent discount given they finished in the bottom eight of the ladder.

Carlton, however, will not get the discount after its remarkable run to finals, as it looks to match a bid on father-son Cody Walker.

The Blues would get pick No.9 if they were to lose to Melbourne in a wildcard final on Saturday night, while they will also have an eye on Sydney's finishing position given they hold the Swans' first pick - currently No.17 - as part of the Charlie Curnow trade last year.

There will also be a watch on Brisbane free agent Zac Bailey, who is weighing up a massive free agency deal from Adelaide, which would likely net the Lions band one compensation should he decide to join the Crows.
