CHRIS Fagan is torn on whether to coach on in 2027, saying there's a part of him that would rather walk away with his team on top.

Fagan joined the coaching immortals on Saturday, guiding Brisbane to a third straight premiership after it overturned a 17-point deficit deep into the fourth quarter to break Fremantle hearts.

In doing so, he joined his great mate Leigh Matthews as the coach of a Lions three-peat.

Having coached for 10 years, Fagan said he wasn't sure whether he'd continue into an 11th.

"It might sound like a strange thing for me to say after we just won a premiership, but I don't really want to be that guy who hangs around until we fail," he said.

"There's a little bit inside of me who'd rather walk away when the team's on top, I've got to be honest. It's sort of the dream way to finish, in many ways. 

"For most coaches, unfortunately, it ends in tragedy, usually, with a coach getting the boot. 

"I've just got to work out whether I've still got the energy required to do that relentless responsibility and pressure that comes with being an AFL coach. 

"You don't really know what I'm talking about until you do it yourself, but it overtakes your life. I don't know if I want to keep doing that, or I don't."

Fagan said he would celebrate his third premiership and "won’t take too much time" in deciding.

When asked what he might do instead of coaching, he laughed and said "retire. I'm 65."

"I think if I didn't coach on, I'd like to do something in footy, but not at the level of intensity that's required to be a senior coach, because it is a lifestyle," he said.

"It never leaves you alone, 365 days a year, seven days a week, it's just always in your head. 

"You're always thinking about the club and what's next and what might be the next game, or how we can get that recruit, or what does training look like, or how can we change the game-plan – I love all that, but you can't do it forever. I'll just wait and see what happens."

Fagan said his over-riding emotion was pride in the club, from the football department led by Danny Daly, to the assistant coaches to the "resilient" players.

He didn't want to take more credit than anyone else, saying he played his role.

As did the players, who unleashed the most amazing four-minute comeback Fagan said he'd seen.

He did concede there was some luck with the injury suffered by Fremantle skipper Alex Pearce in the third quarter.

"To be honest with you, and I reckon you'll all agree, Fremantle deserved to win that game today. 

"They were better than us for longer periods. I feel a little bit sorry for them.

"Gee they played super well today. They would have been deserved winners. We were fortuitous.

"I don't think we did in the previous two … but we definitely had a little bit of luck today and we were good enough to take it."
