FORMER Sydney forward Elijah Taylor has been prohibited from playing in the WAFL until June, and his slim hopes of earning an AFL lifeline via the mid-season draft this year are also over.

Taylor was fined $5000 by the Perth Magistrates Court for bashing his former girlfriend in a Perth hotel last September.

The 19-year-old repeatedly punched his former girlfriend and hit her on the back with a belt during the assault.

Sydney parted ways with Taylor after he pleaded guilty to the assault charges, but he had been hoping to restart his stalled career with WAFL side Perth.

Those plans will need to be put on hold after the AFL imposed a wide-ranging ban on Taylor.

Taylor has been banned from all state and community football competitions until June 1, but he will be permitted to play in reserves or second-team level from May 15.

The AFL also banned Taylor from joining an AFL list for the remainder of the 2021 season.

And Taylor will be required to participate in and complete an approved educational and monitoring program as a condition of return to any level of Australian rules football.

Our view is clear and unequivocal - violence against women is never OK in any circumstance - ever

- Andrew Dillon

"Violence against women in any form is abhorrent and we strongly condemn it." the AFL's executive general manager of game development Andrew Dillon said.

"Our view is clear and unequivocal - violence against women is never OK in any circumstance - ever.

"The sanctions imposed by the AFL reflect the seriousness of Mr Taylor's breach of the AFL Rules and values.

"There is a pathway for Mr Taylor's return to football in time, reflecting his contrition and the ongoing positive effects of his participation in a football program".

Taylor also broke the AFL's COVID-19 protocols last year when he sneaked his then-girlfriend into the Swans' quarantine accommodation while they were in Perth.

The Swans copped a $25,000 fine over that incident, and Taylor was banned for the rest of the season.
