PORT Adelaide skipper Erin Phillips has visited injured young Western Bulldog Brit Gutknecht in hospital in Adelaide after she suffered a horror broken leg playing against the Power.

21-year-old Gutknecht broke both the tibia and fibula bones in her leg in a smother gone wrong, and the game was halted for at least 30 minutes.

The two teams then played out the final few minutes of the second quarter, having had to warm up again on the field.

"There was no rule book about what to do in that situation, we were trying to do our best in that moment. No one really knew, there were a lot of moving parts to it, the way everyone handled themselves in that position was incredible," Western Bulldogs captain Ellie Blackburn said.

"The way the Port girls carried themselves as well, the respect they showed was awesome. Erin's been incredible in the process, she's even visited Brit a couple of times in hospital, which has been amazing that she's shown that support.

"The officials, the umpires were great at communicating towards us and our team, the coaches and our support staff were obviously great at talking to us and making sure that everyone was okay in that process.

"Obviously we haven't witnessed anything like that before, it was pretty scary to be honest, and something that I would never wish upon anyone to ever happen. But because of the way Brit handled herself, it allowed the girls to go back out there and play the rest of the game."

Blackburn said dealing with the somewhat traumatic event has been made easier by the closeness of the team.

"There's a whole lot of love in our team. We've expressed a lot of that even since the moment, at training last night the group shared quite a bit, and wrapped our arms around each other as much as possible," she said.

"We got Britta on FaceTime to give us a bit of an update, which was great. I won't throw her under the bus with some of the things she was saying and videos she sent through, particularly when she was on the green whistle.

"But it's been nice to have the group of players we have supporting each other through this time."

The Dogs released a video on social media showing Gutknecht walking in a hospital corridor with the aid of crutches, one day after surgery on the double-break.

"She's good. I've witnessed some injuries in my lifetime, but never anything like this. An incredible human being, the way she's carried herself through this whole process," Blackburn said.

"Even when she was on the ground, she kept herself together really well and since then, she's had the operation. Things have gone really well with that, so she's out of hospital now and we'll hopefully have her back here at the end of the week."
