Commentary

  • Q4 31:35

FULL TIMEThe Dogs finish fast with the final 4 goals but the Hawks do enough to come away with the 4 points against a very brave performance from the improving Bulldogs. Hawks win by 19 points.

  • Q4 31:20

BEHIND DOGSGrant recovers well after Murphy fumbled but is unable to finish off his hard work as his shot strays right.

  • Q4 30:05

GOAL DOGSLangford almost takes Dixon's head off in the tackle and from dead in front, Dixon adds even more respectability to the scoreboard. Clarkson won't be happy with this finish.

  • Q4 28:50

GOAL DOGSA goal-mouth scramble and eventually the Dogs get reward for effort as Giansiracusa swings the centred pass back to full forward where Griffen roves best and snaps it home!

  • Q4 26:45

GOAL DOGSGrant heads to the danger sport where Jones uses his strength and height to take a strong mark and pops through his first from point-blank. Dogs fighting the game out to the end.

  • Q4 25:15

GOAL DOGSThe Dogs keep the margin respectable as Mr. Reliable, Daniel Giansiracusa, nails his second goal of the afternoon. Hawks leading by 38 points.

  • Q4 24:00

GOAL HAWKSA very strange advantage call after the umpire called for holding the man to Hodge and play stopped, but Roughead did not to run in to the open goal. That's his 50th of the year.

  • Q4 22:40

BEHIND HAWKSHale taps back down to Breust who sidesteps his opponent and then tumbles the shot at goal but in to the post from the pocket. It would have been brilliant.

  • Q4 21:00

GOAL HAWKSHill, from 55, lobs the pass up for Hodge to lead in to. Too easy. Directly in front and only 40m out, Hodge sinks his second goal of the day and the Hawks edge away to a 37-point lead.

  • Q4 19:05

Goodes, who came off the ground about 15 minutes ago has still not returned and it might be his strapped wrist, which he has had troubles with in the past, which is the problem.

  • Q4 16:35

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead is slung in the tackle and consequently, his shot is off target and through for a minor score.

  • Q4 15:00

BEHIND HAWKSStratton sends it long and strong and Hale breaks free from Minson to lead in to the uncontested mark. From 35, it is a clean hit but it shaves the post.

  • Q4 12:35

GOAL DOGSGrant, who hasn't exactly been convincing in front of the sticks today with three behinds, this time guides it home after a great build up and centre clearance from the Dogs.

  • Q4 11:20

GOAL DOGSHunter guides the pass to Macrae with a clever kick as he works Macrae closer to goal, he marks and hands inside to Dahlhaus who fumbles, regathers and curls home a goal.

  • Q4 09:00

GOAL HAWKSSimpkin steals the ball out from the congested pack and then is shepherded in to an open goal as he knocks home his second. Super-sub! Hawks out to a game-high 41 points.

  • Q4 07:20

GOAL HAWKSBreust drops a sitter as he takes his eyes off the ball for a split second but quickly makes amends as he regathers and bends the shot through the big sticks. Hawks in control.

  • Q4 05:55

GOAL HAWKSBaliey takes the mark from the Dogs' defensive clearance and promptly hands to Simpkin who unloads from 45 in the left pocket and does exactly what a sub needs to do! Brilliant.

  • Q4 04:10

BEHIND HAWKSHale shorts to Roughead and from just outside 50, he makes good contact but strikes the woodwork. 2.2 this afternoon for Jarryd and it has been a good duel between the cousins.

  • Q4 02:45

The Hawks have made their sub during the threequarter-time break: Guerra off and Simpkin, who has already had an impact, is on.

  • Q4 01:30

GOAL HAWKSCheney steers the pass to Lewis who sticks out the dukes and plucks a terrific mark. Back him from 40 out. He drills the Hawks' 8th major to extend the lead out to 22 points.

  • Q4 00:30

BEHIND HAWKSMurphy carries the ball over the line for a rushed behind to the Hawks.

  • Q4 00:01

Hawthorn has won 13 of the past 14 at Aurora Stadium and 28 of an overall 39. The Dogs are putting up one hell of a fight though. Hawks need to stand tall to continue their positive trend.

  • Q3 28:40

3QTSensational effort from the Dogs in that quarter as Addison is slow to get up after Gibson fell across his knee in the marking contest. He looks OK. Hawks lead by just 16 points.

  • Q3 26:50

BEHIND DOGSHunter, who has just been activated for Hrovat, with a beautifully-weighted pass in to the path of Grant who slides in for the mark. But again, Grant misfires with an ugly shot.

  • Q3 25:05

BEHIND HAWKSGuerra has a set shot at goal from a very tough angle and his kick stays left for a minor score.

  • Q3 24:30

Jordan and Jarryd Roughead going at it outside the boundary line and the elder cousin gives away the free kick. Good to see some family feud.

  • Q3 23:00

GOAL HAWKSRioli heads Whitecross and Stevens makes front on contact and gives away the free. The intent was there from Stevens but the execution was not. Whitecross slots a steadying major.

  • Q3 22:00

BEHIND DOGSJones off the ground just unable to turf through the goal but the margin back at single digits.

  • Q3 20:20

GOAL DOGSBulldogs' free and it is going to Griffen for a hold by Langford. Griffen has not yet troubled the scorers this afternoon but he certainly has now! Dogs are barking! Hawks by 10.

  • Q3 17:40

A massive confidence booster if the Dogs can steal the next goal. Their intensity is beaming, they are getting numbers around the ball and the pressure they are applying is fantastic.

  • Q3 13:55

Lake buckles under pressure and his kick shoots out on the full. Hrovat's shot fails to score but the Dogs are fighting hard this term.

  • Q3 11:50

GOAL DOGSCooney heads deep in to the pocket and Giansiracusa protects the drop zone and does well to close down the chest mark. Such a reliable kick is Gia and he lives up to his reputation.

  • Q3 08:35

BEHINID HAWKSGunston on a strong lead and Puopolo honours the lead. 15.2 from set shots in 2013 and his shot from 50 on a tough angle is solid, but just off line to the right. 15.3 now for Gunston.

  • Q3 06:55

Good forward and defensive pressure from the Hawks and a team that lacks the finishing polish like the Dogs are being forced in to costly mistakes.

  • Q3 04:20

Out of bounds on the full from Addison from about 50 after he took a solid mark against Gibson on half forward.

  • Q3 03:00

BEHIND HAWKSThe perfect pass from Hale as Roughead doubles back and then leads in to the space to take the chest mark. Roughead off line from 30 out on a slight angle.

  • Q3 00:01

Dark clouds now hovering over the ground and the rain, which is expected to fall, might be on its way. Third quarter is underway.

  • Q2 27:15

HALF TIMEIt hasn't been as exciting as last night but we have witnesses two amazing moments that will be replayed for a long time yet: Cheney's mind-boggling miss and Hodge's monster goal.

  • Q2 25:00

BEHIND DOGSGiansiracusa marks in the pocket, plays on quickly and centres to Grant who will line up from from 45 on a tight angle, but manageable. The shot is wide.

  • Q2 23:05

GOAL HAWKSOne of the goals of the year from the Hawthorn skipper as he smothers and intercepts Griffen's kick in the same motion and torpedoes the shot from about 70m out which bounces home!

  • Q2 21:15

GOAL DOGSGood attack on the footy from Dixon and he is taken high by Guerra and wins the free. A much better finish after a string of misses from the Dogs and the margin is reduced to 15 again.

  • Q2 19:55

The set shot from Kyle Cheney was from inside the goalsquare and his team-mates will be on his case for the rest of the week after that extraordinary blunder which hit the post.

  • Q2 16:00

BEHIND HAWKSCheney finds space to take the uncontested mark and then is collected by Jordan Roughead well after the mark and rightly awarded 50. Amazingly, Cheney misses the unmissable.

  • Q2 13:40

BEHIND DOGSTutt runs his full measure from half back and the pumps the kick inside forward 50 where Addison clunks a great grab. Not going to win games off footy if you continue to miss chances.

  • Q2 11:15

BEHIND DOGSStevens across the face of goals from point-blank as the Dogs continue to lack polish in front of the sticks.

  • Q2 09:30

GOAL HAWKSTransition footy from the Hawks as Smith finds Hale who has recovered well from a hard tackle and Hale hands over to Roughead who finishes superbly from 50 on the run.

  • Q2 08:05

Defensively, the Dogs are holding up well this quarter but are struggling to get the ball forward of halfway.

  • Q2 05:45

BEHIND HAWKSGunston receives the handball and then hooks the shot over his shoulder but pulls it too much.

  • Q2 03:25

BEHIND HAWKSSewell lays a great tackle and wins the free for holding the ball, his shot doesn't have the journey from outside 50 and the ball travels over the line for a behind.

  • Q2 02:00

BEHIND HAWKSCooney awarded a free just inside attacking 50 and he releases the shot from right on the paint, he gets under it but the breeze carries it wide.

  • Q2 00:01

Second term underway. Just saw vision of a tackle by Rioli on Griffen which was reminiscent of the Judd 'chicken wing' tackle on Adams. Probably not as bad though but Griffen did appear sore...

  • Q1 30:05

QUARTER TIMEA relatively subdued first term but the worrying number for the Dogs is 17-8 inside 50s in favour of the Hawks. Hawks by 15.

  • Q1 30:00

BEHIND DOGSLibertaore centres the kick back to Hrovat just at the siren blows but Hrovat drags his shot wide after the bell.

  • Q1 28:20

10 disposals already to Ryan Griffen who works tirelessly week in week out as the ball is thrown up inside the Dogs' forward 50.

  • Q1 24:50

GOAL HAWKSA free kick awarded to Lewis out of the ruck contest for interference deep in Hawthorn's attack and the Hawks are back out to a 16-point lead as we approach quarter time.

  • Q1 22:10

GOAL DOGSGrant drives the ball in to the left forward pocket and Addison leaps to take the ball at its highest point and bring down a strong grab. From a difficult angle, he nails the Dogs' 2nd.

  • Q1 21:30

This is the first time Brian Lake is facing off against his former Bulldog teammates for four premiership points. He's been a fantastic recruit for the premiership favourites.

  • Q1 18:00

BEHIND HAWKSTalia's defensive clearance is anything but a clearance and Smith gets to the fall of the ball first, runs at goal but drags his shot across the face. Dogs being let off the hook.

  • Q1 16:45

BEHIND HAWKSYoungster Will Langford in his debut for the Hawks dribbles the shot along the ground from the boundary and registers a minor score.

  • Q1 14:55

GOAL DOGSThe Dogs move the ball quickly through the middle, Cheney goes to ground inside his defensive 50 and Dahlhaus pounces on the loose ball, runs in and nails the easy goal.

  • Q1 13:50

BEHIND HAWKSBreust squeezes a pass to Whitecross and the Hawks are all over the Bulldogs at the moment. Whitecross strikes it well from 45 but the shot fades away to the right.

  • Q1 12:10

GOAL HAWKSLewis on the 50 lowers his eyes and pulls his kick to the lead of Rioli. Cyril drills the major from 45 and directly in front and the Hawks off to the start most of us would of expected.

  • Q1 09:25

GOAL HAWKSA defensive blunder from the Bulldogs after great forward pressure from the Hawks as Puopolo receives the handball and from 45, makes the most of the opportunity.

  • Q1 08:50

BEHIND HAWKSCheney to the goal square from the boundary line and Goodes works back to thump it over the line.

  • Q1 07:35

BEHIND HAWKSSavage with a short pass to Hale who has broken free of Talia to juggle the mark but his shot fades in to the post.

  • Q1 06:25

BEHIND DOGSJones stands strong against former Bulldog Brian Lake and brings down the mark. He fires at goal but the shot starts and finishes left.

  • Q1 05:05

BEHIND HAWKSGunston wins the ball off hands and rolls the ball at goal from the top of the square but rushes the shot and dribbles it wide.

  • Q1 03:25

GOAL HAWKSJarryd Roughead leads his cousin Jordan Roughead to the ball and takes the grab out in front. He delivers the goods from 50 and draws first blood for the Hawks.

  • Q1 01:05

BEHIND DOGSJones juggles the mark on the paint and then chips his pass to Grant who will attempt to open the account for the Dogs from the right pocket. It works back left to right but not enough.

  • Q1 00:01

As stated, the Hawks are without Mitchell who has been withdrawn due to illness and replaced by Sewell. The Dogs line up as selected. Subs: Simpkin (Haw) and Hunter (WB). Underway at Aurora Stadium.

  • Q1 00:00

It's the Hawks vs the Dogs from Tasmania this afternoon as football gets underway on Saturday following Friday Night's thriller. Can't see the Hawks losing this one, even without Buddy and Mitchell.

Isaac Smith breaks away from Tory Dickson on Saturday afternoon

HAWTHORN skipper Luke Hodge kicked a 65m goal and Jarryd Roughead reached his half-century of majors for the season as the Hawks beat the Western Bulldogs by 19 points on Saturday.

Ladder leaders Hawthorn improved its win-loss record to 14-2 with a 13.17 (95) to 11.10 (76) victory at Launceston's Aurora Stadium, with Coleman Medal contender Roughead booting three goals to take his tally to 50 for this year.

The Bulldogs suffered their 12th loss from 16 outings but finished strongly by kicking the last four goals of the match after trailing by 44 points at the 24-minute mark of the final term.

The highlight came in the second term. With his side only 15 points ahead at the 23-minute mark, Hodge kicked a classic captain's goal.

The 2008 Norm Smith medallist smothered a kick by Ryan Griffen and booted the ball forward with an old-fashioned torpedo punt that sailed through the goals on the first bounce.

Hawthorn led by 15 points at quarter-time and 20 points at half-time - 6.9 to 3.7 - as both sides struggled for accuracy in the windy conditions.

The battling Bulldogs dug in their claws during the third term and outscored Hawthorn two goals to one to trail by 15 points at the last break.

Four consecutive goals in the first nine minutes of the final term - including two to sub Jonathan Simpkin who came off the bench in the last quarter - extended Hawthorn's margin to 41 points.

Hodge added a second goal to cap a fine performance as the Hawks scored six goals in the last quarter, but the Bulldogs also kicked six including a second goal to Griffen, who had a game-high 37 possessions.

Adam Cooney was also prominent for the Bulldogs while Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Isaac Smith were good contributors for the Hawks.

Small forward Cyril Rioli was held to seven disposals by Bulldogs' tagger Liam Picken.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said his team had endured a tough month including a win in Launceston over the Brisbane Lions, a loss to Geelong at the MCG and victory away against Port Adelaide. Their next assignment is another big clash, against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

"We've got to freshen ourselves up and get ready for the Bombers now," Clarkson said.

"Really it's just a matter of continuing to play good enough footy to get the four points, and keep adding them up so you put yourself in a good enough position at the end of the year."

Clarkson said he expected to regain key players Franklin (knee) and Sam Mitchell (ill) for the blockbuster against Essendon while Grant Birchall (knee) has resumed running.

Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney said he was proud of his team.

"We've made some terrific steps in the last two weeks," he said after the game.

"In the last month we've hung in and hung in and hung in and we'll get a win soon if we keep doing that."

But in a big blow for the Dogs, McCartney said defender Brett Goodes may have broken his arm.

"It seems like it's a broken arm (for Brett Goodes), just caught in between a contest and a teammate," he said.

"We're running games out pretty strongly but we keep breaking bones."

Bulldogs skipper Matthew Boyd has missed three games with a fractured cheekbone.
