Commentary

  • Q4 25:10

Full Time and Geelong sew up second spot (for now), eclipsing a paltry performance from West Coast who truly, were never in the contest. The Cats power towards the finals with a 66 point flogging.

  • Q4 22:50

GOAL EAGLESA shade of the bronx cheers ring out as Darling gets in front of his man in order to clutch the mark 45m out. From the right pocket, he sends it through at goalpost height..

  • Q4 21:29

BEHIND CATSJohnson wants one for the road as he works himself onto the end of the chain before shanking a shot to the right from 45m out. Only two minutes of misery remains for West Coast..

  • Q4 20:49

BEHIND CATSOnly the woodwork stands between Caddy and the Cats going out by 76 points as his quick effort on the run from the left pocket snicks the left post on the way through..

  • Q4 18:58

With Kennedy going goalless tonight, it opens up the Coleman Medal race to be won by Jeremy Cameron who currently leads it by two. To win it as a 19year old would be the story of the year.

  • Q4 15:55

GOAL EAGLESWellingham's rewarded for his efforts as he tracks back to complete the mark over his shoulder. Feigning to play on, he eventually decides to take a set and duly converts from 25m.

  • Q4 13:55

Looks as though West Coast fans have taken to reading their Footy Records instead of the action onfield as their beloved Eagles continue to be harassed and buffeted off the footy. One way traffic.

  • Q4 11:21

Many an Eagles fan will be asking where Darling, Lycett, Kennedy and Hill have been tonight? Not at their normal influential best would be the short answer. They've been immaculately held.

  • Q4 08:57

Geelong continue with their relentless attack at the footy as Gaff, Kennedy and Cox are beset upon before the latter takes the ball to the boundary line and falls over it. A brief respite..

  • Q4 05:50

GOAL CATSMackie is deprived of a certain goal as his lofted entry rolls goalwards before Blicavs and Podsiadly debate who wants the open goal as 'Pods' darts in to half-volley it home.

  • Q4 04:55

Clever interchange in confined spaces as Cox, Gaff and Schofield exchange sharp handballs before the ball is bombed too long which allows Enright to clear the danger inside 50. Shabby forward entry.

  • Q4 02:57

Hard work from Priddis inside Geelong's forward 50 as he manages to stave off Enright's entry in order to clear. They've been completely outclassed tonight; can they conjure late majors?

  • Q3 29:20

3QT and the rampage against West Coast has not stopped with Geelong keeping their foot down to power to an unassailable 70 point lead. Barring a catastrophic meltdown, the Cats are home.

  • Q3 26:58

GOAL EAGLESWest Coast snare their second for the term as Bartel is pinged for everyone's favourite new rule change after sliding in to win the ball. From 45m out, Selwood delivers a bullet..

  • Q3 23:57

GOAL CATSThe queue to become Geelong's next goal-kicker continues to grow as Christensen feeds Murdoch in transition. Approaching 50, Murdoch weighs up his angles and works it home beautifully.

  • Q3 20:47

Images of Brad Scott in the coaches box paint an accurate picture as he's shown taking in a massive yawn and stretch. Someone should run him up a Red Bull so he can wake up. Cats by 70..

  • Q3 17:47

Promising signs for the Eagles as they've once again managed to dry up Geelong's run but are looking somewhat impotent when they shovel the ball up front. Just no marking targets..

  • Q3 14:50

GOAL CATSWest Coast seriously looking down the barrel of a 100+ defeat as Christensen straightens up from 30m out in order to thread through a perfect drop punt from the left pocket. Too easy.

  • Q3 13:59

BEHIND CATSStokes ALMOST conjures up one of the most miraculous majors as he hacks the ball out of midair from 45m, landing it only slightly in front of a diving Enright five metres short.

  • Q3 11:59

BEHIND EAGLESStill no joy for West Coast as Cox reels in an overhead mark which sees him starting his shot from 30m out, tight against the left boundary. The resultant shot ends up wide..again.

  • Q3 10:01

BEHIND EAGLESSchofield fancies his chances with a running monster as he cocks the gun and fires a mighty up-and-under from 55m which misses to the left side. Eagles playing only for pride now.

  • Q3 08:10

GOAL CATSThe slaughter is back on as that man again, Selwood, runs into open space, reduces any angle and bombs home from 45m out. Selwood has four; Geelong have 13. Cats by 63.

  • Q3 07:01

GOAL CATSSelwood kickstarts the Cats as he tracks the ball to the left boundary line before nursing it home with incredible ease from 30m out. How Selwood was afforded space is beyond me?

  • Q3 06:15

BEHIND CATSConsecutive minors for Geelong as Johnson is the lucky receipient of an off-the-ball free which makes Under 10s footy look tough. From 35m out, Stevie J drags it to the right. Justice.

  • Q3 04:50

BEHIND CATSGeelong are off early in the term as Blicav's shot is away to the right side. If West Coast can string together some coast-to-coast footy, we might have a contest. Doubtful.

  • Q3 03:50

GOAL EAGLESA rarity for the Eagles as they manage to construct their transitional play to perfection before Hill gathers on the run from 55m out to convert with a running bomb. Nice reward.

  • Q3 02:35

BEHIND CATSA spiteful opening to the term as Cox is reported for striking Selwood off the ball, 80m away from general play. With the free from 25m out, Mackie makes a meal of it..

  • Q2 29:55

Half Time and it's a break which couldn't come quick enough for a shambolic performance from the West Coast. Kept to just 15 points, they've been massacred by a redhot and firing Geelong. Cats by 56.

  • Q2 26:59

GOAL CATSImmense forward press as Kelly and Podsiadly pounce before the ball is shifted to Stokes who runs diagonally to the right boundary in order to hook home a stunner. Geelong by 56.

  • Q2 23:26

GOAL CATSThis is developing into a training run as Johnson's measured kick inside finds Christensen who marks, plays on, loops a handball over the top and finds Podsiadly curling it home from 15m.

  • Q2 19:50

GOAL CATSSelwood slots his second with skill as he unloads with a running shot approaching an open forward 50 and receives the kind bounce. This could be a 100 point shellacking at this rate.

  • Q2 18:57

BEHIND EAGLESShuey works hard as he evades countless Cats defenders before dishing off to Wellingham who offloads from 50m but tugs his shot across the face. West Coast need to rally.

  • Q2 15:55

GOAL CATSKelly's making a mockery of the wet conditions as Motlop handballs into the turf which allows Kelly to poke it off the ground from 10m. A fortunate bounce sees it trickle home. Cats by 39.

  • Q2 14:45

BEHIND CATSA tripping free kick paid against Carter allows Duncan to line up 45m from home with a slender right angle to speak of. Sent the distance it strays late to stay wide. Fair roost..

  • Q2 11:55

GOAL CATSA masterclass of how to work tight spaces as Kelly roves for the spillage 20m from home, keeps his feet, sells some candy and curls it home beautifully off his right. Drought breaking.

  • Q2 11:10

BEHIND CATSGuthrie is sold into trouble as he takes possession of a handball inside 50, works his way around his man but snaps sharply to the left of goal from the left pocket. Almost snared it.

  • Q2 09:56

A rarity for an Eagles home game as the heavens have well and truly opening, sending hordes of fans scurrying for their ponchos. Geelong's 25 point lead may just be game winning at this stage..

  • Q2 07:40

BEHIND CATSEnd to end footy for a change as Blicavs presents and completes an overhead mark from 45m out. With the heavens opening, Blicavs hangs his effort out to the right side. Cats by 25.

  • Q2 06:19

BEHIND EAGLESThe rarely sighted Kennedy manages to work his way free inside 50 as he provides the shepherd before handballing to Butler who blazes wide from 40m out to the left side.

  • Q2 03:40

BEHIND CATSSelwood's task in traffic is too tricky as his effort from 30m out strays to the right side. West Coast will fancy their chances if they snag the next one.. or possibly two. Tense stuff.

  • Q2 02:15

West Coast starting this term much in the same way the finished the first with a strangulation of Geelong's midfield. Ball yet to see any vacant pasture as the Eagles are manning up beautifully.

  • Q1 31:05

Quarter Time at Subiaco and Eagles fans will be wishing for a better second period as Geelong's vaunted midfield have dominated to take control of the contest. It's Geelong by 24 at the first break.

  • Q1 28:45

GOAL CATSParty trick time as Kelly's hard work for possession sees him stabbing the ball off the ground to an open goalsquare where Selwood is waiting to pounce to ram it home. Cats by 24.

  • Q1 26:46

Oooooh. Dubious decision as Cox overlaps with his run in midfield before driving it low to Schofield who looks to taken a neat diving mark. Waved play on and Geelong clear it to centre wing. Dudded?

  • Q1 23:30

GOAL EAGLESTwo in a row as Dalziell takes possession after receiving a free for being 'tunneled'. From 45m out to the right, his kick just manages to make the distance. Reviewed and accepted.

  • Q1 20:51

GOAL EAGLESWest Coast with a pulse as Schofield pulls off a sublime set shot deep inside the right pocket, threading it through at goalpost height. What a difference controlled footy brings.

  • Q1 18:01

A small win for the Eagles as they've managed to 'win' the last three minutes by drying up Geelong's run through midfield. Issue is though that they still can't get it past halfforward.

  • Q1 15:59

Hard position to be in for West Coast who are somewhat torn between trying to engage in a shootout with Geelong or whether to try and stem the bleeding. Personally, I'd choose the latter.

  • Q1 13:25

GOAL CATSSheesh. It's going to be a loooong night for West Coast as Duncan finds space inside 50, reels in the open mark and plays on to handpass to Walker who roosts it home from the goalsquare.

  • Q1 11:31

GOAL CATSAnd it's that hard run and slickness in transition which sees a long ball intended for Blicavs falling to open territory where Vardy gathers, bolts into an open square and rams it home..

  • Q1 10:50

BEHIND EAGLESAn opportunity for the first major for West Coast as a tight handball sees Sheppard gathering but spraying wide from full tilt from the right pocket. Cats break hard in transition..

  • Q1 09:40

GOAL CATSMotlop's tearing West Coast a new one as he does the impossible by gathering in heavy traffic, taking one peek at goal and snapping truly from 20m out. Geelong are HOT.

  • Q1 06:49

Geelong's ability to run hard in both directions is telling even at this early stage. Although being too handballhappy, their transition from half back to half forward is something to savour..

  • Q1 04:40

GOAL CATSA little too slick and ultimately worrying for the Eagles as Varcoe dishes out a quick handpass which finds Stokes twisting, turning and snapping home in traffic from 30m out..

  • Q1 04:01

BEHIND CATSDuncan's run is left unrewarded as he streams onto an overhead handball from Motlop, blazes towards goal but hooks his kick to the left. Cats are already looking switched on. Scary.

  • Q1 02:30

GOAL CATSPerfectly measured and plenty of poise for the opener as Motlop gathers on the arc, turns his defender inside-out and snaps powerfully over his left shoulder where the ball bounces kindly.

  • Q1 01:05

Not the best leadup to this encounter for Geelong whose team bus broke down forcing all players to catch taxis to Subiaco. Conditions underfoot look a little muddy which is surprising for this venue.

  • Q1 00:00

Brad Scott's comments still echo in West Coast fans ears when he described this road trip as the worst in the country. It's grudge match territory as the Cats line up against the Eagles..

Cats monster Eagles to lock up double chance

Joel Selwood reminds brother Scott who's on top at the moment

GEELONG has sewn up a top-four spot and sent a statement to its rivals with a 66-point thrashing of West Coast in wet conditions at Patersons Stadium.

The Cats won 16.11 (107) to 6.5 (41) in front of 34,394 fans who braved the horrible weather.

West Coast's misery was compounded when Dean Cox was reported for an off-the-ball clash with Joel Selwood in the third quarter. It is just the second time Cox has been reported in his 271-game career.

Geelong's running brigade was simply awesome, led by Selwood with an equal career-best four goals to go with his 29 touches, while Allen Christensen, Mathew Stokes, James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel and Steve Johnson ran riot through the middle.

The Cats' defence was frugal too. The Eagles were held to their lowest score at Patersons Stadium and the miserly Harry Taylor held Coleman Medal favourite Josh Kennedy scoreless for the first time this season.

Scott Selwood had 26 touches and 11 tackles to lead the Eagles and Sharrod Wellingham was prolific with 29 possessions and a goal in his 100th game, but the Eagles had few winners on the night.

The Cats set the tone early with a blistering first 13 minutes. They kicked five goals to one behind in a vintage Geelong display.

Heavy rain before the game ensured it was played in greasy conditions and the Cats' superior ball-handling, dare and dash blew the Eagles away.

"We were a bit wary about coming over here against West Coast, who have been in good form over the past month," Geelong coach Chris Scott said

"Maybe the slippery conditions helped us a little bit but kicking the first four or five goals gets the momentum going your way.

"I thought even more important than that was the way we played. I think we played the style of footy that wins you finals which is pretty important at this time of the year."

Steven Motlop was a star in the opening term, gathering nine touches and kicking two goals.

The Cats had 25 more disposals and 13 more tackles to quarter-time and thoroughly deserved their 24-point lead.

The second term was even more one-sided after a five-minute burst of rain. The Cats kicked five unanswered goals, including two clever efforts from James Kelly, to establish a 56-point break at half-time.

The Cats kicked all of their 11 goals in the first half from general play, while holding the Eagles to their lowest half-time score of the year: 2.3 (20).

"Geelong came out slick and classy and they maintained it for the whole first half but the first 10 minutes set the standard," Eagles coach John Worsfold said.

"We fought on hard in that second half but the damage was obviously done. They were just way too good for us in that opening half."

Motlop was subbed out of the game at half-time as a precaution due to hamstring tightness but his absence didn't blunt Geelong razor-sharp attack.

Selwood filled the breach with two goals for the quarter, adding to his two from the opening half. It was the fourth time in five matches he's kicked three goals or more, a mark he had achieved just once in his previous 150 matches.

"He's pushing forward a little bit more and he's finishing really well," Scott said.

"I would regard him as a pretty complete midfielder."

Eagles midfielder Luke Shuey endured a low-key return from three weeks out with hamstring injury, gathering just seven touches before being substituted for Andrew Embley in the third term.

Embley himself won a late reprieve when Chris Masten was withdrawn pre-game with a thigh problem.

"Shuey was going to start as the sub until Masten got injured. So we decided we'd still play him 60 minutes," Worsfold said.
