Commentary

  • Q4 28:50

Full Time and West Coast continue their surge up the ladder and sneak into the eight with a morale and percentage boosting win over an outenthused and under-sized GWS. Eagles win by 100.

  • Q4 26:40

BEHIND EAGLESLeCras still can't add to his tally of three as he completes a tricky mark inside the right forward pocket. His kick, started to the right, flashes out wide to the left. Back to 100.

  • Q4 25:04

BEHIND GIANTSThe ignominy of a 100 point defeat is quelled (but for how long?) as a rushed kick from Bruce is pushed through on the line. It's down to 99 points but West Coast are still rampant.

  • Q4 23:51

GOAL EAGLESWobble wobble wobble but it's effective as Kennedy gets out in front of Mohr before stuttering and stammering his way from 55m out. The kick is a dead set dart though. Eagles by 100.

  • Q4 20:57

GOAL EAGLESToo big and too powerful as Cox forces the turnover on the right wing before squaring up Hill on the lead. From the right pocket, he wraps this one inside the posts with precision.

  • Q4 20:04

BEHIND GIANTSTreloar with a difficult opportunity to snare the ninth for GWS however presenting front and centre, his ambitious snap-over-the-shoulder is away to the right side. Eagles to rebound..

  • Q4 19:03

GOAL EAGLESRebounding from Scully's minor, Hill enjoys a nice stoll down the left wing before putting it out diagonal to the run of Darling. From 25m out in front, Darling snares his fifth..

  • Q4 16:05

BEHIND EAGLESPositive play from GWS as Hampton wins the tap down to find Miles who goes searching for Cameron before Scully intercepts the mark. From 40m in front, he sends it out to the right.

  • Q4 14:35

BEHIND EAGLESBrown continues to endure a shocking day as his latest attempt to hit the scoreboard for the first time sees a running shot from 45m sprayed to the left of the big ones. Unlucky.

  • Q4 12:54

BEHIND EAGLESGaff continues the run of West Coast shots at goal as he marks in front high inside the right forward pocket. He almost works it back perfectly from right to left. Almost..

  • Q4 10:56

BEHIND EAGLESLeCras looks to keep pace with the likes of Darling and Kennedy with 4 goals as he lines up from the right forward pocket. His release is slightly off though and away to the left..

  • Q4 09:53

GOAL EAGLESDarling shows the importance of keeping your feet in a contest as he leads to the left of the goalsquare in order to snap up the loose ball which is then grubbered home from close range.

  • Q4 07:04

Fantastic defensive pressure as GWS looked set to kick their first of the term as Mohr bombs it long for Smith's run before he's run down by Sheppard who shows great awareness and urgency..

  • Q4 04:27

BEHIND EAGLESKennedy continues to amuse with the bizarre as after roving a ball inside the goalsquare, he snaps powerfully to send it back at 90 degrees for an awkward minor. How'd he miss?

  • Q4 03:05

GOAL EAGLESA poor turnover as GWS looked to enter their 50 sees it rushed back with lightning speed before Rosa spots LeCras lurking at the back. From 30m out, he stretches the lead to 74..

  • Q3 31:45

Three Quarter Time and a heartening quarter for GWS as they only lose the quarter by two points. The bigger picture however sees them well down to a methodical Eagles who lead by 68 at the last..

  • Q3 31:25

BEHIND GIANTSGWS look to replicate West Coast's vaunted run off halfback with a chain of handballs which sees Shiel unloading from 50. With millimetres remaining, Brennan ensures it's rushed.

  • Q3 29:15

GOAL GIANTSNice precision from the centre clearance as Greene gathers with speed to burn high inside 50 before he pops out a bullet handball which Cameron runs into an open goal. Slick reply.

  • Q3 27:56

GOAL EAGLESKennedy continues to feast on GWS defenders as he gobbles up a ball inside 50 before measuring up his shot from 40m. Stuttering with his run-up, his kick is arrow straight..

  • Q3 25:25

Nice pressure from the Giants as Gaff looks to spark a fouron-two break down the left wing which ends when intensity from Coniglio brings the ball runner to ground. Really nice spell for GWS here.

  • Q3 22:30

BEHIND EAGLESTenacity in their inside 50, which has been the hallmark all day for West Coast, sees the ball moved to Butler who transfers a quick release onto his right boot. Centimetres wide.

  • Q3 20:36

A small win for the Giants as they've lifted their intensity inside 50 to have West Coast hemmed in before Scully releases the pressure valve with a clumsy free for in the back. Nice passage from GWS.

  • Q3 18:10

GOAL GIANTSTwo in a row for the Giants as Cameron releases a clever kick towards the goalsquare which Whitfield flicks to Scully who shapes up to work around his body from 30m out in front.

  • Q3 16:36

GOAL GIANTSWhitfield shows the smarts that comes with a 1 Draft pick as he runs his full measure before sending a handball to Smith who runs into an open goalsquare. Good pressure, good play.

  • Q3 14:03

GOAL EAGLESNormal service resumes as West Coast pick-and-choose their targets before Naitanui is found in front, well ahead of Gilham. With a helicopter from 40m, 'Nic Nat' does enough..

  • Q3 11:56

BEHIND EAGLESNo luck for Darling this time around as he presents solidly in order to complete an impressive mark overhead. From 45m out, he gives this one too much pepper. Out to the right.

  • Q3 09:06

GOAL EAGLESPlenty to review this week for GWS as yet another kick across goal deep in defence is plucked off by the Eagles. On this occasion, Darling grabs his third with a steady shot from 35m.

  • Q3 06:58

GOAL EAGLESKennedy with sublime skill at ground level as he slips a handball out the back to Gaff who treads the left boundary before threading home a cracker from 48m out. Smooth skill.

  • Q3 05:12

GOAL GIANTSGreat running from Cameron who manages to run off his man to track down Tomlinson's long ball in. From the right forward pocket, he kicks truly for his second. Confident start.

  • Q3 03:02

BEHIND EAGLESA small win for GWS as they've been able to withstand West Coast for three minutes before Darling marks to easily in front. From a tight angle to the left, he lets GWS off the hook.

  • Q2 32:35

Half Time and West Coast continue to rack up records, producing the highest scoring half of any team this year as they put GWS to the sword. The Eagles with the cue in the rack leading by 66 points..

  • Q2 31:05

BEHIND EAGLESKennedy's up for anything resembling a set shot at present as he looks to add to his tally 3.0 but from high inside the right forward pocket, this one ain't counting as a major..

  • Q2 28:55

GOAL EAGLESA learning experience for Gilham as he allows Naitanui the chance to lead from in front which sees 'Nic Nat' muffing the mark before he follows up to snap home freakishly from 30m out.

  • Q2 26:59

GOAL EAGLESAgain there's no self control or evident pressure inside the Eagles 50 which allows Kennedy to bring it to ground to Selwood who sends a handball to LeCras to bend home from close range.

  • Q2 24:14

BEHIND GIANTSOpportunities don't come much better as Masten shanks a rushed kick from defence which pops up on Miles' chest. From a 40 degree angle to the left, he sends it too far to the right.

  • Q2 21:16

GOAL GIANTSConfusion reigns as the ball sits on the ground following an attacking throw-in for GWS before Ward snaffles the loose Sherrin, receives an advantage-call and dribbles it home..

  • Q2 18:55

GOAL EAGLESPriddis with the credit for this one as his hard-headedness at the centre bounce sees the ball pumped inside 50 where Kennedy snaps truly around his body. Eagles out by 60.

  • Q2 17:50

GOAL EAGLESIt's a slaughter as the ball is sent deep inside 50 where Greene, Corr and Giles are outmuscled before Gaff throws it onto his deadly left foot from 25m out. Painful stuff for GWS.

  • Q2 16:11

BEHIND EAGLESBrown's still wondering what he's done wrong as his third shot of the day is a difficult one from the right forward pocket. Started to the right, it stays that right. Minor score.

  • Q2 15:47

GOAL EAGLESIt's getting towards cricket score territory for GWS as Gaff runs and creates before spotting up Hill from 45m out. From the left, he gets this one 100% right. Getting ugly now.

  • Q2 14:36

BEHIND GIANTSSmith gets himself into terrific position to secure the Giants second for the term as he fishes around the ruck contest before spiralling a long bomb wide from 40m out. WCE in control.

  • Q2 13:05

Even dominant teams can produce clangers as Kennedy produces one of the worst set shots you're likely to see, shanking a ball from the left wing which is marked 20m out in front by Shiel.

  • Q2 10:55

GOAL EAGLESTerrible defensive work from GWS as Mohr weighs up a kick back into the goalsquare which is plucked off by Hill who runs into an open goal to grubber it home. WCE up by 42.

  • Q2 08:13

BEHIND EAGLESMore easy possession for the Eagles inside 50 with LeCras marking on his chest after neat work from Selwood. Hugging the boundary, he releases a banana which collects the post.

  • Q2 06:36

GOAL GIANTSGWS get some reward as Palmer's hard ball get sees him floating the ball towards the goal square where Cameron marks strongly. From 25m out, he kicks a much needed major.

  • Q2 04:24

GOAL EAGLESSensational movement once again as the Eagles come in waves off centre half back before Gaff's left foot finds Darling's hard marking hands. From 45m out, he's a dead eye.

  • Q2 03:02

BEHIND EAGLESHurn gets an opportunity to hurt GWS as he rushes around the man on the mark as the designated kicker before launching a massive bomb which just misses to the left side.

  • Q2 01:36

BEHIND EAGLESService resumes as early as the first minute of the second quarter as West Coast send it forward where Hill fails to capitalise on earlier lead up work from Kennedy. WCE ominous.

  • Q1 32:35

Quarter Time and not many surprises as West Coast chalk up their bestscoring quarter of 2013 with a 7 goal opener which sees them comfortably out by 33 at the first change. Long road for GWS.

  • Q1 31:45

BEHIND EAGLESIt's a pure procession at the moment as Masten sprints to the goalsquare to compete before pumping a high ball into the sky which is handballed through by Greene. Eagles by 33.

  • Q1 29:58

GOAL EAGLESWest Coast do as West Coast want as hardness at the contest inside the GWS attacking 50 sees the ball sent to Butler who as steady as you want, slides it home for West Coast's 7th..

  • Q1 26:57

GOAL GIANTSGood perseverance from Buntine as he works Hurn into an error before handballing to Ward who hemmed in from 40m squeezes a perfect drop punt home. Giants NEEDED that one.

  • Q1 24:03

GOAL EAGLESFive in a row and GWS are struggling as LeCras releases a dubious 'handball' which finds Kennedy who roves the pack hard before snapping home from 25m out. Eagles by 32.

  • Q1 21:02

GOAL EAGLESNaitanui running amok at the clearances as he again taps over the back sensing the presence of LeCras who doesn't break stride before curling it home from 35m out. Danger times now.

  • Q1 18:58

GOAL EAGLESWeight of numbers from West Coast as they move from midfield to half back where Sheppard marks comfortably. From a 40 degree angle 45m out, he bends it home to perfection.

  • Q1 16:57

BEHIND EAGLESWest Coast are falling into old habits as Masten fails to make the Giants pay after an errant defensive kickout, curling a close shot from 30m out wide to the right. Eagles to 3.3..

  • Q1 14:14

BEHIND EAGLESCox with a straight forward free kick as he's dragged down onto his butt from the ruck contest. From 40m out to the right side, he sprays his kick across the face. Eagles by 13.

  • Q1 11:56

GOAL EAGLESQuicksilver ball usage as West Coast win the centre clearance before the ball is transferred to Kerr who on the run from 45m out, gets his angles and distance right to bomb home.

  • Q1 09:37

GOAL EAGLESDarling registers his first courtesy of Kennedy leading hard up the ground from centre half forward as he marks unopposed from 40m out. From bang in front, no error is made.

  • Q1 07:44

No surprise to see the underrated GWS taking it up to a more fancied rival early. Their ball use in particular is looking swift however the question is whether they can keep it up over four quarters?

  • Q1 05:30

GOAL GIANTSNo better sight in footy then O'hAilpin's celebrations in full flight as he roves the pack inside 50 before snapping a beauty off his left foot from 40m. Insane fist pumps follow..

  • Q1 04:05

BEHIND GIANTSNice transition from GWS sees the ball spread to the left wing where Cameron marks 55m out from home. Striking it powerfully, it's got the distance but is just touched on the line..

  • Q1 03:04

GOAL EAGLESSelwood shows the Giants young guns how it's done as he sharks the throw in before pumping it down Kennedy's throat. From 40m, he calmly slots it though. Eagles out early..

  • Q1 01:10

BEHIND EAGLESAs easy as you like for the Eagles as Naitanui rises sharply to tap the ball down to Rosa, who on the run from 50, launches a stab kick across the face. Waaaay too easy to be honest..

  • Q1 00:00

Welcome to Skoda Stadium in a battle of contrasting 'Wests'. For GWS, they're hunting their first win for Season 2013 whereby the West Coast Eagles are hunting a place in the 8 with victory today.

Eagles enjoy 100-point win against improving GWS

By James Dampney 04:15pm May 25, 13

Highlights: GWS v West Coast The Giants and Eagles clash in round 9

Nic Naitanui was just one of the Eagles many solid performers against GWS

WEST Coast's revival is gathering steam, with the pre-season flag fancies moving into the top eight for the first time this year via a 100-point victory over Greater Western Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Having started with just one win from their opening five games, the Eagles have now won four straight, capped by a 23.17 (155) to 8.7 (55) triumph over the Giants in front of 6324 fans at Skoda Stadium.

With Dean Brogan (back) a late GWS withdrawal, Nic Naitanui and Dean Cox tormented Jonathan Giles in the ruck, while the West Coast forwards also had a field day.

Jack Darling (five goals), Josh Kennedy (five), Mark LeCras (three) and Josh Hill (three) all benefited from some silver service, while Chris Masten, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff and Matt Priddis led a dominant midfield performance.

Five talking points: Giants v Eagles

"We are really satisfied with the way we came and performed today," West Coast coach John Worsfold said.

"Our focus was to come and perform well for four quarters and I think the boys did that."

It was another day of development for the young Giants, who tackle Carlton next week still searching for their first win of the year.

Jeremy Cameron continues to amaze, managing another three goals from limited opportunities to take his tally for the year to 25.

There were also flashes of the side the Giants will eventually become, particularly in a competitive third term, which finished four goals apiece.

But an overall hit-out count of 55-23 in West Coast's favour and 52-34 in the clearances made it a straightforward day for the West Australian club.

"If someone had sneezed at that end it might've been a goal and we might've won the quarter," GWS coach Kevin Sheedy said of a close call just before three quarter-time.

"Very rarely do we get that opportunity to win a quarter against West Coast, who are a damn good side.

"Look at the hitouts compared to ours. We're basically off the back foot right from the start."

Tom Scully, Lachie Whitfield, Toby Greene and Adam Treloar had their moments through the middle of the ground, but it was an otherwise predictable result between two teams with opposite ambitions in 2013.

The game got off to a cagey start, with scores locked at 1.1 after 10 minutes, before five Eagle goals in a 13-minute span broke the contest open.

A late Sam Butler snap gave West Coast a 33-point lead at the first change.

The Eagles then pressed home their advantage in the second quarter, doubling its lead to 66 points at half-time.
It was then relatively comfortable the rest of the way for the visitors, who host Richmond at Patersons Stadium next week.
