  • Q4 30:50

Full Time and it's Port Adelaide who start 2014 with a bang, outlasting and outrunning a Blues outfit which looked the goods early but faded badly late; the Power with a respectable 33 point victory.

  • Q4 29:55

GOAL POWERAnd there's the icing on the cake as Butcher remains planted to the turf as the long ball comes before he half-volleys it off the ground. With one second remaining, she's all done..

  • Q4 28:20

So the question that will come out of this encounter is whether Carlton possess the legs to go with their opponents for the rest of the year? Port have ben great but Carlton have their worries..

  • Q4 26:50

With a little over three minutes to go, this one has been wrapped up by the Power as the Blues at least look for some respectability on the scoreboard. It's hard going however with Port up by 27.

  • Q4 24:10

Illdiscipline does nothing for Carlton's cause as Walker elects to throw Monfries into the fence after the mark was taken outside the Blues 50m arc. He apologies straight away but it doesn't matter.

  • Q4 21:50

BEHIND BLUESWhilst not impossible, the Carlton comeback needed this one to go through as Ellard gathers at the back of a pack and chips goalwards from 45m to the left side; across the face.

  • Q4 20:20

GOAL BLUESIt's hard work getting it forward as Simpson works it to the goal-square where Waite taps it on to Garlet who juggles it before chipping it through from point blank range. Port by 28.

  • Q4 18:55

GOAL POWERIt's now an absolute rout as Watson shows no awareness in trying to run the ball out of defence and is run down by Westhoff. From 35m out in front, Westhoff chalks up his fifth.

  • Q4 16:30

BEHIND POWERA long bomb forward looking for Monfries is punched through as Walker takes no chances with a heavy-fisted effort. Blues need something in this final term for their fans..

  • Q4 15:55

BEHIND POWERPort well and truly with this game in their keeping as Henderson is dragged down by Butcher 45m out from home. Only a shocking set shot release saves the Blues; it's wide right.

  • Q4 12:55

GOAL POWERAnd that should be about it as Walker gets into the back of Gray and gives away the free kick at the top of the goal square. Gray chalks up his fourth and sends the Power 26 clear..

  • Q4 10:40

GOAL POWERA monster 70m clearance from Watson comes back with rapid fire as Polec gathers on the fly from the 50m arc and cracks home a brilliant drop punt. Blues gone? Port by 20..

  • Q4 05:10

GOAL POWERCarlton's defensive clearance is a shambles as the ball is pumped back inside where Gray uses his small stature to duck under tackles before snapping home from 25m out. Classy.

  • Q4 04:50

BEHIND POWERPort Adelaide are starting to find plenty of space in the middle as Monfries loads up 50m and sends it to the line where Warnock gets back to punch it through. Power are coming..

  • Q4 03:40

BEHIND POWERPort build with patience from half back before Wines finds Broadbent on the 50m arc.Looking to give off Broadbent loads up from 55 and leaves it to the left side. Fair roost it was.

  • Q4 02:05

BEHIND BLUESThe quarter's started with Murphy tearing down the right wing before his handball to Gibbs hits turf before Kreuzer picks it up to snap over his shoulder from 40m out; punched through.

  • Q4 00:01

Underway in the final quarter with Carlton in front but Port Adelaide, as is their habit, capable of flying home with boundless energy and strong run through their midfielders. It's the Blues by six..

  • Q3 30:55

Three Quarter Time and Carlton will have to pull out something special if they're to thwart the fastfinishers that the Power are with the Blues lead six points at the last change. A thriller awaits..

This game is belting along with the Blues having rediscovered their first quarter form but the Power more than capable of kicking quick bags of majors. Only a brave man would tip the victor..

  • Q3 16:05

GOAL BLUESA reviver of sorts for Carlton as the Blues channel the 1970s with long bombs to the goal square which on this occasion is taken by Waite. From 20m in front, Waite sends it home.

GOAL POWERExcellent from Port as Monfries spots out Ebert and hits the moving target from the centre square. With a 41 degree angle and stationed 45m out, he bombs it through. Blues in trouble.

Half Time and this one is set up beautifully with the Blues once again surging out to a 24point lead before the Power reeled them in. If Port kicked straight, they'd be in front. Blues by 9.

  • Q2 32:10

BEHIND BLUESCarlton's first score in 12 minutes as Curnow streaks down the left before chipping inboard to Murphy who feeds Robinson. On the run from 25m out, Robinson sprays it. Unbelievable.

BEHIND POWERA turnover on centre wing from Ellard allows the ball to be driven into White who has players free everywhere. Going back to his mark, he hooks it wide from 40m out to the left.

  • Q2 30:20

A real chance for Port Adelaide to hit the break with their noses in front as Westhoff drops a mark he should have gobbled up which immediately puts the Blues back under pressure. 2 minutes remain.

  • Q2 28:30

BEHIND POWERWesthoff is threatening to tear Carlton's heart out as he works his way onto the ball before centreing it to Butcher 40m out. A let-off for the Blues as Butcher sprays to the right.

BEHIND POWERCloser but no reward for the Power as Wines streams in on goal and hits the post with his shot on the run from 35m out. Port starting to lift the tempo yet again. Danger for Carlton.

  • Q2 25:00

BEHIND POWERNo man marking from the Blues allows Westhoff to drive the ball to Gray's lead inside the right pocket. Missing the mark with his kick, Polec intercepts to spray it from 35m out.

  • Q2 23:10

GOAL POWERAnd Port keep in touch as Wines shows incredible skill at ground level to intercept a blind handball to snap truly from 25m out. They'll continue to come will the Power..

  • Q2 21:55

Westhoff now makes an important return for the Power as he's passed a concussion test after the earlier knock with Walker. He'll be crucial down the stretch for Port Adelaide. It's the Blues by 24.

  • Q2 19:55

GOAL BLUESMcLean's hardness from the bounce sees Curnow feeding Bell who goes wider to space where it finds Gibbs. Leaning back from 45m and just to the right, Gibbs guides it home. Incredible.

  • Q2 18:55

GOAL BLUESInstinctive from the Blues as Impey sees Waite on his hammer before the bounce of the ball sits up for Curnow who gathers at speed and converts on the run from 45m out. Nice response.

GOAL BLUESCarlton move it from the centre to see it finish just inside the right pocket where Curnow picks it up and instinctively snaps over his left shoulder, curling home an impossible snap.

  • Q2 09:40

GOAL BLUESA risky kick from Pittard sees McLean providing for Thomas who loops a handball to Garlett who centres it to Gibbs 15m out. Releasing from 25m out, he provides the steadier. Blues by 10.

  • Q2 08:50

A stunning transformation in this quarter as it's now Port who are that much harder at the contest to have the Blues struggling. Carlton have not won a contested possession this term.

  • Q2 06:20

GOAL POWERThree goals in six minutes and the Power are right back where they need to be as Schulz rises beautifully in the goalsquare to haul in a beauty. From 15m out, Port close to within 4.

BEHIND BLUESRobinson tries to reply for the Blues as he works the ball around the boundary before releasing a worm burner from the left which bobbles across the face of goal; almost bobbled home.

Quarter Time and Carlton have burst out of the blocks with zip and dare to pressure the Power into turnovers, making the most of their possession to take a 22 point lead into the first change.

  • Q1 29:55

Thomas is doing his utmost to endear himself to the Carlton faithful as his hard attack on the ball sees the ball pushed out of play on centre wing. He's been ticking all the right boxes so far..

  • Q1 27:10

BEHIND BLUESWalker again with freedom through the middle as his dash allows him to link with Robinson who bombs long to see Warnock fumbling it across the goal-line. Unlucky..

  • Q1 25:55

Carlton's run is back as Walker embarks on a solo run down the right wing before his handball finds Curnow who bends it inside where it just misses Waite before Menzel dribbles it out of play..

  • Q1 21:10

Hardness from Bell and Robinson sees Carlton with a win as Bell is the lone man chasing down two Port players but does enough to find the boundary line just outside Carlton's 50m arc. Nice fight.

  • Q1 19:55

GOAL BLUESMurphy leading from the front as his hard tackle on Boak reefs the ball free before Yarran finds Ellard's lead. Paid 50 for late contact, Ellard makes sure of it from the goalsquare.

  • Q1 19:40

A win for Port Adelaide as they've managed to stem Carlton's earlier freeflowing run as they compete for a throw in on centre wing. The longer this contest goes, the more Port will fancy their legs.

  • Q1 17:55

BEHIND BLUESSlack marking from the Power as Polec hangs off Bell and allows the Blues midfielder to take an easy grab 40m from home. Tight in the left pocket though, it's pushed to the right.

  • Q1 15:55

Westhoff is playing as the loose man in defence at the moment for the Power but the Blues are playing straight into Port's hands with slow movement of the ball. A change coming over this contest..

  • Q1 13:40

Port Adelaide turning up the intensity inside their attacking 50 as Jamison is placed under intense pressure before Waite somehow scrambles the ball clear. Power looking to go on with it..

  • Q1 11:25

GOAL POWERSlick from Port down the right wing as Boak tracks the ball to the boundary before sending a bullet-like pass into the middle where Hartlett marks. From 35m out, he steers it home.

  • Q1 09:25

The ball isn't coming out as both teams scramble for the ball on centre wing before the Blues send it inside 50 where Westhoff shanks it out of danger. The Blues are up for the challenge early on.

  • Q1 07:20

GOAL BLUESWinning the hard footy is paying dividends for Carlton as a long ball to the square is taken by Everitt who drifts in from the side. From 10m out in front, he registers his first..

  • Q1 05:50

Waite launches himself threedeep into the pack to haul down a screamer inside the left pocket for the Blues. The set shot unfortunately is pushed across the face from 40m out. What a let down.

  • Q1 03:10

GOAL BLUESA warm welcome to the Blues for Thomas as he loses his tag, sprints inside 50 and collects a sharp handball from Murphy to send it home from 35m out on the fly. Nice finish.

  • Q1 02:30

BEHIND BLUESA deliberate out-of bounds ruling sees Bell having a quick snap inside the right pocket. Looks the goods early but fades late. Blues out of the blocks; be it only through minors scores.

  • Q1 01:55

BEHIND BLUESFirst shot at goal and first goal review as Garlett's quick snap from the top of the goal square appears to have touched Gray but deflects off the head of Thomas. Stopped a certain six.

  • Q1 00:20

We're underway as Polec drives the Power forward before the Blues mop it up at half back and release to Gibbs on centre wing. Port already looking very aggressive with their movement..

  • Q1 00:00

Welcome to Etihad Stadium as Carlton look to kickstart their season with victory over a very skilful and quick Port Adelaide. Perfect conditions await all and sundry with first bounce in 10 minutes..

There's no question they blew us away in the last quarter ... you don't need to know a lot about football to see that they dominated
PORT Adelaide's hopes of replicating its fairytale 2013 season are off to a flying start after a fast-finishing 33-point win over Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Sunday night.

After a see-sawing first half between last year's beaten semi-finalists, the Power kicked 11 goals to four to win their season opener for the fifth time in six years.

The final score was 18.12 (120) to 12.15 (87).

There were doubts around the Power's ability to repeat last year's incredible rise up the ladder from 14th to fifth, but Sunday night's emphatic finish suggests coach Ken Hinkley has his team primed.

Brisbane Lions recruit Jared Polec was exceptional and added another dimension to the midfield, finishing with 24 possessions, six inside 50s and a long running goal in a standout performance.

Midfielders Ollie Wines (28 possessions, 11 clearances and two goals), Kane Cornes (30 and 12 marks) and captain Travis Boak (23 and five clearances) also stood up in front of a crowd of 24,640 for the rare Sunday night fixture.

"It's one game and it's the start of the season, but it's the way we wanted to start the season," Hinkley said after the match.

"If you look at our season 12 months ago it was a significant game to start with.

"We've probably advanced our club to the point where we were playing a higher ranked team in round one and we were able to come away with a strong win, which was pleasing."

Carlton burst out of the blocks to take a 22-point lead at quarter-time but the game turned on its head after the first change.

Talented tall Justin Westhoff, who started as a loose man in defence, was sent forward and kicked two goals in a minute, finishing with four for the quarter, alongside 10 possessions (five contested) and six marks.

The Blues responded with a brief cameo from Jarrad Waite, but they lacked a consistent forward presence.

"There's no question they blew us away in the last quarter ... you don't need stats and you don't need to know a lot about football to see that they dominated," he said.

"But the same side last year, we ran over them to make the finals … that's the way it is.

"We've just got to get time into some of our blokes who haven't had the lead up that perhaps a lot of other players have had."

In the midfield, Bryce Gibbs (23 possessions and two goals) and Kade Simpson (25 and six clearances) led the way with early support from Tom Bell (15 and four tackles).

It was a mixed Carlton debut for ex-Magpie Dale Thomas, who finished with 16 possessions and one goal.

The dynamic midfielder prevented Carlton's first goal with his head, but his first kick in a home and away match for the Blues was a goal.

Sydney Swans recruit Andrejs Everitt kicked his first goal for the Blues four minutes later as Carlton burst out of the blocks.

With the home team 22 points clear at the first change, it took a star turn from Westhoff to turn the tide with the Port Adelaide key forward unstoppable in the second quarter.

Andrew Walker caught the 27-year-old high with a bent left forearm in a marking contest that is likely to be assessed by the Match Review Panel.

Walker was later reported for rough conduct for throwing Power forward Angus Monfries over the boundary and into the advertising boards.
