  • Q4 35:00

Full Time and it was the West Coast who started brilliantly and they let up as they hand the muchhyped Bulldogs an absolute flogging in the opening round. A white-hot West Coast win by 65..

  • Q4 32:45

Fatigue now well and truly setting in for both sets of players with the game having started in 33 degree conditions early. It's been the 'Dogs who haven't handled the Eagles heat tonight though..

  • Q4 30:05

So with three minutes remaining on the time piece, it's the West Coast who have shown that they're a different unit under Adam Simpson with great signs from their midfield and dynamic forward line..

  • Q4 27:40

GOAL EAGLESNaitanui sets this up as his punt to the top of the goal-square isn't punched away far enough by Morris and falls to Le Cras who shows the nous to snap around his body from 15m out.

  • Q4 26:25

GOAL EAGLESThis is turning into an epic last stanza as Minson wins the tap work inside the Eagles 50 but directs it straight to Masten who snaps home comfortably from 15m out to the left..

  • Q4 25:00

GOAL BULLDOGSAnd as has been the pattern in the final term, the 'Dogs find a reply yet again as Dahlhaus displays beautiful vision to spot up Macrae. 30m out to the right presents no dramas. Home.

  • Q4 23:05

GOAL EAGLESGift wrapped present for Darling as with the ball being brought inside by MacKenzie, he's awarded another free kick for a hold. With no angle to speak of 25m out, it's guided home.

  • Q4 21:05

Looks as though Crameri is still struggling after his prior goalscoring antics as he reaches towards the right side of his groin and asks for medical attention. Could be an adductor tear perhaps..??

  • Q4 18:50

GOAL BULLDOGSNice fight being shown by the Doggies as Dahlhaus works hard to keep the ball in before it's dribbled towards the goal-line for Crameri to pick up and slam home. Good quarter 'Dogs.

  • Q4 16:50

GOAL BULLDOGSAnd now the 'Dogs show that they can still run out a game as slick movement down their right wing sees Boyd marking in front before he plays on to make it certain..

  • Q4 15:50

BEHIND EAGLESBeautiful transition footy from the Eagles as it's worked down the right wing before Cripps fancies his chances from 45m out, almost over the right boundary; across the face.

  • Q4 13:40

GOAL BULLDOGSIt's raining quality majors at the moment as Macrae uses his neat turn of speed to angle out towards the left boundary before snagging a beautiful snap from 35m out. Goal-fest.

  • Q4 12:30

GOAL EAGLESWellingham now turns provider as his small stature sees him working himself free in traffic to chip a ball to Le Cras, who with no opponent on him, hammers it home from the goal square.

  • Q4 10:35

GOAL EAGLESThey're lining up as Le Cras is spotted up on the Eagles 50m arc before he fires a handball to Wellingham who on the run from just inside the arc, sends it home with plenty of room..

  • Q4 08:40

GOAL BULLDOGSMurphy with a Hail Mary as his work from the defensive kick-in sees the ball worked back to him to snap a sensational shot from the left boundary inside the left pocket. Crisp..

  • Q4 07:20

GOAL EAGLESThe procession continues as Sinclair's entry inside 50 lands on the head of Goodes and allows Darling to use him as a step-ladder. From 35m out in front, Darling chalks up his third.

  • Q4 05:00

GOAL EAGLESSinclair's prior miss is made up for almost immediately as Darling intercepts the defensive kick-in before screwing it to Kennedy who streaks into an open goal-square to whack it home..

  • Q4 04:40

BEHIND EAGLESBennell shows his pace through midfield before forcing it wide where Sinclair tries to work it home from deep inside the right forward pocket; bent too far to the right though..

  • Q4 02:55

GOAL EAGLESAnd there's the response from the Eagles as Darling's held in the contest with his back towards goal and receives a welcome free-kick. From 45m out in front, he bangs through his second.

  • Q4 00:45

GOAL BULLDOGSBeautiful work from the Bulldogs as Hunter's evasiveness sees him ducking two tackles before feeding Higgins who turns towards home and curls it home from 40m out to the left.

  • Q3 28:20

Three Quarter Time and the Western Bulldogs will need to pull out an absolute miracle to salvage this as the Eagles are rampant and don't look like stopping. It's the 'Coast by 51 at the last change.

  • Q3 25:40

GOAL EAGLESOne for the highlight reel and an early contender for Goal of the Year as Shuey throws his boot at the ball and half-volleys the Sherrin through from five metres out. Incredible.

  • Q3 24:30

BEHIND BULLDOGSCooney with an absolute gift as the ball drops goal-side from a pack inside the right pocket before he scoops it up and slams it onto his boot. No composure; it's wide to the right.

  • Q3 22:40

GOAL BULLDOGSThe 'Dogs manage to scramble a response as Higgins reads the ball well from the attacking throw-in, straightens up and threads it home from 35m out to the left. Eagles by 46.

  • Q3 21:00

BEHIND EAGLESLe Cras is still proving the thorn in the side of the Bulldogs as he drifts in from the side to mark overhead 30m out. The 45 degree angle does him though as it's shanked wide.

  • Q3 19:55

It's way too stagnant for the 'Dogs as Cooney slots in as temporary fullback before the ball is chipped around to Giansiracusa who sees his long bomb plucked off at the other end by Glass. Too slow.

  • Q3 18:05

A small victory for the visitors as they've managed to stem the bleeding for the moment as they clear the ball from defensive 50 but only as far as centre wing before Priddis sets them up again..

  • Q3 15:50

Dickson will now make way for the Bulldogs as they look for some mercurial magic from their veteran in Giansiracusa. He'll need to kick at least six by himself if the visitors are any chance..!!

  • Q3 13:30

GOAL EAGLESIt's now the flanks that West Coast utilise as MacKenzie gallops 60 metres by himself before hanging it up for Kennedy. Rounding the mark from the left pocket, Kennedy drags it home.

  • Q3 10:30

GOAL EAGLESThe 'Dogs fight is brief however as Naitanui marks all alone in the middle before feeding a handball to Shuey who streams to the 50m arc before bombing home accurately. Class.

  • Q3 08:00

GOAL BULLDOGSThe milestone man in Murphy keeps the 'Dogs in this (just) as a scrubbed kick finds him marking well outside 50. Releasing from 45m, he wobbles it through. 'Dogs have a pulse.

  • Q3 04:40

GOAL EAGLESLe Cras shows the forwards how it's done as he motors out to complete a clean mark 35 metres from home. Faced with a slight angle to the left, he compensates for it. Eagles by 45.

  • Q3 02:30

BEHIND EAGLESWellingham with an opportunity to impress the Eagles faithful as his mark sees him coming in from 25 metres out with a 13 degree angle. It's ugly though and shanked to the right side.

  • Q3 01:10

BEHIND BULLDOGSA neat start for the visitors but they don't hit the scoreboard as much as they wish too as Stringer's tight shot on the move from 40m out to the right fades late to stay wide..

  • Q2 31:30

Half Time and after a brief yelp early in the term from the Bulldogs, the Eagles have marched on with proceedings to grab a stranglehold of this contest. It's the Eagles by 39 at the long break..

  • Q2 29:50

Higgins is in the hands of medical staff as he's copped an arm from Naitanui in the marking contest and is assisted from the field with blood coming out of his right ear. 60 seconds remains..

  • Q2 27:25

Campbell comes as close as any Bulldogs player has to registering a score this quarter as he traps the ball inside the goalsquare but it shut down immediately and not allowed to snap around his body.

  • Q2 25:20

GOAL EAGLESThis is hard-running personified as the Eagles fast spread sees Gaff running into the flight of it inside the left pocket; released from 40m out, it's never in doubt. Is it Game Over..?

  • Q2 24:55

Promising for the 'Dogs as a series of frenzied long bombs sees the ball worked inside their attacking 50 but through sheer persistence, the ball is worked back up centre wing by Johannisen. Too good.

  • Q2 22:55

Still all to do for the Bulldogs as the ball is trapped securely outside the Eagles 50m arc before Selwood's ambitious handball finds empty space before Wallis works the ball clear for the Bulldogs..

  • Q2 20:40

It looks as though there's 30 players wearing yellowand-blue at the moment as the 'Dogs finally clear their defensive lines before the ball is turned over. The Eagles load up again

  • Q2 18:30

BEHIND EAGLESThe onsalught continues as a long ball forward looks for Naitanui but is worked over the boundary line. From the throw-in, Campbell takes no chances and rushes the ball over..

  • Q2 16:40

GOAL EAGLESThis one's getting away from the 'Dogs as Priddis has an eternity to provide a handball for Selwood who snaps around his body from 45m out in front and finds the middle..

  • Q2 13:20

GOAL EAGLESSlick link-up as Murphy is dispossessed by Sinclair before over-lapped running sees Le Cras shifting it to Rosa who bangs it long on the run from 55m and shoves it home. Eagles by 26.

  • Q2 11:30

GOAL EAGLESHardly clean with their disposal but they're all worth six points as Selwood's handball sees Priddis turning and releasing on the 50m arc before it clears everyone to drop over the line.

  • Q2 09:55

GOAL BULLDOGSHunter's hard-running rewards the 'Dogs with their third as he hammers back to the goal square to reel in Dahlhaus's long bomb. From 25m out, he threads it through. Important.

  • Q2 08:40

You sense already that the Western Bulldogs definitely need to secure the next major as the West Coast are threatening to blow this one open; the 'Dogs are just managing to hang in at the moment..

  • Q2 05:55

GOAL EAGLESSheer weight of numbers pressure the Bulldogs into a mistake a loose handball from Wallis is pounced on by Le Cras who streaks into an open goalsquare to snap it home. Eagles by 20.

  • Q2 03:05

BEHIND EAGLESSelwood makes a meal of a golden opportunity for the Eagles as Gaff offloads a handball from a free kick to see the former hitting the post from 25m out inside the left pocket..

  • Q2 02:05

West Coast fans are livid as Le Cras is sucked in by a challenge after Kennedy complete an overhead mark inside50 and pushes Picken in retaliation. Kennedy's mark is reversed; free kick 'Dogs.

  • Q1 29:45

Quarter Time and encouraging signs for both sides as the 'Eagles jumped out of the blocks before the 'Dogs reeled them back in; West Coast with the last three majors though lead it by 13 points.

  • Q1 29:40

Johannisen's saved as his dash back towards goal to prevent Wellingham a running shot seem him wrapped up with prior opportunity. The umpire converges on the contest but the siren beats the whistle.

  • Q1 27:30

GOAL EAGLESLe Cras angles his way in from the side to complete a comfortable mark deep inside the left pocket. Coming in from 40m out, Le Cras is deadly with his accuracy. West Coast by 13.

  • Q1 25:45

The 'Dogs live another day as Hurn's huge punt forward is competed for solidly by Mitchell who gets up superbly but drops a difficult chance at the last second; he should be lining up from 20m out..

  • Q1 23:55

Shuey's defensive press earns plaudits as he smothers a last ditch attempted clearance from Wallis which traps the 'Dogs inside their defensive50 yet again. West Coast pressuring and harassing well.

  • Q1 20:50

A nice opportunity opens up for the Eagles as they break through midfield through Shuey before the ball is worked wider to the flanks where eventually the boundary line beats everyone. Wasted.

  • Q1 18:50

GOAL EAGLESAnd it's West Coast who go coast-to-coast as Sinclair reels in a one-hander inside the centre square before bombing long to Cripps who plays on to shank it home from 20m out in front.

  • Q1 18:05

Tenacity from the Eagles defenders sees them working the ball to their advantage before Selwood wins himself a free kick for high contact. Shifting to quickly, the Eagles are away through the middle..

  • Q1 15:30

GOAL EAGLESWest Coast starting to find their trademark run as Naitanui's punch finds Cox who taps it over the top for Cripps to be released to work home a running shot from 25m out to the left.

  • Q1 14:50

BEHIND EAGLESStarting to get a roll on are the 'Coast as Cox gets himself onto the end of a handball and turns inboard to open up the angle from the left pocket; curled wide from 30m out..

  • Q1 13:40

BEHIND EAGLESComedy capers inside the Eagles forward 50 as Cox manages to scramble a ball onto his boot from 15m which almost evades two bumbling 'Dogs defenders before it's rushed through..

  • Q1 11:10

BEHIND BULLDOGSNo accuracy from Hunter as he spurns a fantastic chance for the 'Dogs to register two-in-a-row as he's spotted up by Dahlhaus. From 35m out to the left, he screws it wide..

  • Q1 09:15

GOAL BULLDOGSFreakish stuff as a long ball comes inside the 'Dogs 50, clears the pack and falls to Crameri. From 45m out in the left pocket, Cramieri tries to centre it but instead curls it home..

  • Q1 08:05

Cooney looks to set the Bulldogs up inside 50 but on this occasion the defensive half is being patrolled well by MacKenzie. Both sides looking full of threatening pace. Quick contest; even contest..

  • Q1 05:30

Hot footy inside the Eagles forward 50 as the 'Dogs aren't being allowed any room to move as Selwood looks backwards for Cox on the left boundary but sees an errant handball run out of play.

  • Q1 03:25

GOAL BULLDOGSSharp work as Murphy pressures nicely for a turnover in midfield before supplying a wide handball to Dickson who comes inboard to find Hunter. From 40m on the fly, Hunter converts.

  • Q1 02:00

West Coast stream forward from the bounce as Le Cras shows nimbleness to skip around two defenders before working it towards full forward where Kennedy gives away a free for a hold. Eagles hot.

  • Q1 00:30

GOAL EAGLESWest Coast waste no time getting acquainted with the big sticks as Naitanui taps down to Selwood who spears it into Darling. From 45m out straight in front, Darling goes BANG!!

  • Q1 00:00

Welcome to Patersons Stadium on a warm afternoon for the final game of Round 1 between the West Coast Eagles and Western Bulldogs. First bounce is scheduled for 7:40p.m AEST..

Eagles get Simpson era off to a flyer against Bulldogs

Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy celebrate an early goal during the Eagles' big win over the Bulldogs

Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy celebrate an early goal during the Eagles' big win over the Bulldogs

NEW WEST Coast coach Adam Simpson enjoyed a dream debut in the hot seat as his side cruised to a 65-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Patersons Stadium.

Forward Mark LeCras booted five goals, while Dean Cox starred in the ruck in the 21.8 (134) to 11.3 (69) rout.

Eagles midfielder Sharrod Wellingham faces a nervous wait after he stuck out his leg to trip Bulldogs speedster Jason Johannisen in the third quarter.

But apart from that it was good news for the Eagles, whose firepower around the ground proved too much to handle for a Bulldogs side that had hoped to give the finals a shake this year.

Cox (23 possessions, 26 hit-outs), Andrew Gaff, Matt Rosa, LeCras, Jack Darling (four goals) and Matt Priddis were crucial in the win, while ruckman Nic Naitanui played out a full match in a sign that he's finally overcome his groin injury.

Simpson was pleased with the win but cautioned fans and pundits alike not to get carried away with West Coast's strong start to 2014.

"We finished 13th last year, so we didn’t have a great year and we want to improve … there will be some hiccups on the way but tonight we were pretty happy," he said.

Bulldogs defender Dale Morris held Josh Kennedy to just two goals, while Shaun Higgins (23 possessions, two goals) overcame a knee to the head from Naitanui to be one of his team's best.

Veteran Robert Murphy kicked two goals, but the classy playmaker was relatively quiet in his 250-game milestone.

The Bulldogs' handball-happy game plan proved to be their undoing, with the Eagles' unrelenting pressure causing a glut of turnovers.

Dogs coach Brendan McCartney said his side simply lost their confidence with the ball in hand as the game went on and the Eagles maintained their fanatical pressure.

"it's not the easiest thing to switch back on in the middle of a game. And they played it on their terms for most of the night. They were very good," he said.

Former Bomber Stewart Crameri made a bright start to his time at the Bulldogs, opening his account with a stunning goal on the run from the boundary line early in the match.

But with the Eagles boasting tall timber Kennedy, Jack Darling, Callum Sinclair and a resting ruckman in attack, Crameri spent large chunks of the first half in defence.

West Coast led by just 13 points at quarter time, but it broke the game wide open in the second term with a five-goal blitz.

The Eagles won most of the key statistics in the first half.

The inside-50 count (32-14), contested possessions (89-64), hit-outs (32-16), clearances (27-21) and marks (41-25) all heavily favoured West Coast, and the scoreboard reflected their dominance.

Former Eagles coach John Worsfold was given a standing ovation by the 36,752 crowd during a lap of honour at halftime.

The celebrations continued in the second half as the Eagles cruised to victory in impressive style, with the final inside-50 count reading 60-37.
