Match  Feed

  • Q4 33:03

FULL TIMEThe Hawks in atrocious conditions put the Suns to the sword and run out 53 point winners, they will however be sweating on Rioli's hamstring, for the Gold Coast it was one to forget.

  • Q4 31:47

GOAL SUNSDixon kicks the final goal of the match after the siren sounds to cut the final margin to 53 points.

  • Q4 29:42

GOAL SUNSBennell chips a pass inboard to Ablett who marks 40 out and on a much improved angle, the Skipper elects to go for the set shot and kicks his second.

  • Q4 27:34

BEHIND SUNSBennell is playing all alone in the goal square, his attempt to mark is spoilt and the ball comes off hands for a point.

  • Q4 26:06

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead with another hurried shot on goal, this one hits the post for yet another minor score.

  • Q4 24:00

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead is one out up forward, he loses the ball, regathers it and loses it again before finally tumbling through a hurried kick for a behind.

  • Q4 22:18

INJURY HAWTHORNThere is speculation that Rioli may have suffered a hamstring twinge and the Hawks have decided to put him on ice, so to speak, for the rest of the game.

  • Q4 20:38

GOAL SUNSIt is junk time in Tasmania as the Suns record back to back goals, a first for the second half, courtesy of a free kick to Smith against Lake who was caught holding on.

  • Q4 19:18

GOAL SUNSPrestia runs through the arc and then after a couple of settling strides lets rip for a long goal.

  • Q4 17:35

The pace has really come off the game as the Hawks put the cue in the rack, this might be a chance for the Suns to add a modicum of respectability to their score.

  • Q4 15:23

Bruest who was struck by Harbrow has been off for over ten minutes and Rioli who is sitting under a blanket with ice on his legs both look done for the afternoon, what a luxury for Hawthorn!

  • Q4 13:44

GOAL HAWKSLewis out points Ablett, who is still looking a little proppy, to mark 30 out wide on the flank. Lewis is very accurate in front of goal and this is no exception.

  • Q4 12:56

BEHIND SUNSDay marks outside the arc, his set shot however is off line and limps in for a minor score.

  • Q4 10:12

I'm not sure what the Suns will take out of this match after last weeks win over Geelong they would have been feeling full of confidence in at least being competitive today.

  • Q4 08:16

Harbrow has gone into the book for striking and Ablett is looking restricted in his movement after hobbling off, there is no good news at the moment for the visitors.

  • Q4 06:49

GOAL HAWKSHodge with another six pointer, pushes the lead out to seventy points and the Suns simply have no answers.

  • Q4 05:23

SUBSTITUTION HAWKSBirchall is off and into the Red Vest as Duryea comes on.

  • Q4 03:44

BEHIND SUNSDixon tries to emulate Birchall but can only sneak his long kick in for a behind.

  • Q4 02:43

GOAL HAWKSBirchall outside fifty, gathers the ball runs on an arc and sets sail for goal, the ball has plenty of carry and sails through for another goal...that was a great kick on a dry day.

  • Q4 01:35

The ball is once again trapped in attack as the Hawks' forward press kicks into gear.

  • Q4 00:42

The rain is coming down in sheets at Aurora Stadium and the Suns probably cannot wait for this one to be over.

  • Q4 00:00

FINAL QUARTERThe final term is underway and once again it is the Hawks who work the ball clear from the centre bounce.

  • Q3 30:56

THREE QUARTER TIMEThe Hawthorn show continues as they stretch their lead out to almost ten goals...the Suns need to find a way to stem the flow and try to get something out of this match.

  • Q3 28:43

GOAL HAWKSLuke Bruest has 26 goals straight, he was running towards goal in space when the ball came his way, he jinked around an opponent and then slotted home the goal.

  • Q3 27:02

BEHIND HAWKSAnother attempt on goal by Roughead is once again rushed over the line by the Suns, McKenzie is almost playing as a goalie at the moment.

  • Q3 25:58

It doesn't get any better for the Suns, not only do they trail by over fifty points the rain is beginning to tumble down once again.

  • Q3 24:23

The ball is...you guessed it...deep in attack for the Hawks, the Suns occasionally get the ball out of defence but for the majority of this term it has been penned in attack for Hawthorn.

  • Q3 23:02

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead gathers just metres out, his kick along the turf is trapped by a Suns' defender who then thrusts it over the line, like a rugby try!

  • Q3 21:30

SUBSTITUTION SUNSBroughton is off and is donning the Red Vest, allowing Lonergan to make his first appearance of the match.

  • Q3 19:00

GOAL SUNSFinally the Suns have another goal after a long kick into space allows Martin to run onto it and then saunter into the open goal.

  • Q3 18:27

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead takes a tumbling mark millimetres off the turf, his kick however is off target drifting off line for a minor score.

  • Q3 16:48

GOAL HAWKSHale intercepts a sloppy attempt by the Suns to get out of defence, he off loads the ball to Brrchall who adds another goal to Hawthorn's tally.

  • Q3 13:35

Another long kick forward from the Suns and once again they pick out a two on one contest, where Lake, in front position, takes the relieving mark.

  • Q3 12:03

Hale is all alone at centre half back and where do the Suns send the kick...that's right...right down his throat. The Suns look lost at the present!

  • Q3 10:30

GOAL HAWKSIt's not one way traffic, it's 'run away' traffic as Roughead out bodies May and takes a juggling mark, he's too strong and easily converts the kick for his second goal.

  • Q3 09:39

BEHIND HAWKSBurgoyne with a snap around his body tries to curl the ball through, he cannot and the ball goes behind.

  • Q3 08:39

The rain has stopped, the wind has dropped but it is pouring goals to the Hawks, at the moment the Suns look lost!

  • Q3 06:38

GOAL HAWKSThe Skipper off a step drops the ball onto his boot kicks a lovely goal from 40 out, that's seven unanswered majors for the 'Brown and Gold'.

  • Q3 04:11

BEHIND HAWKSSmith intercepts the ball on the boundary line 40 out, he will go back and take the set shot, he looks for an option inboard but nothing is on. His shot on goal is well wide.

  • Q3 02:29

And still they come...this game is being played in Hawthorn's attacking 50.

  • Q3 01:09

GOAL HAWKSThe Hawks make it six straight as Ceglar running through the centre corridor 15 out accepts the hand ball and drives home the goal...that was not the start the Suns' wanted.

  • Q3 00:00

THIRD QUARTERThe third term is underway and the Hawks start as they finished exploding out of the middle and heading forward.

  • Q2 32:28

HALF TIMEThe Hawks put down their foot and accelerated away from the Suns with five unanswered goals to end the first half, it was a ruthless display from a power house team.

  • Q2 31:48

GOAL HAWKSRioli with a little bit of magic, sees the ball spill in front of him and somehow stomp, pushes the ball through...he didn't have time to kick and so had to improvise.

  • Q2 29:37

With the Hawks on song the Suns have committed numbers back and that means that when they do get the ball out of defence there is no one there to take the ball and it comes right back.

  • Q2 28:01

The Suns' poise seems to have deserted them as their disposals begin to go astray and right when they can least afford it the rain returns with a vengeance.

  • Q2 26:22

GOAL HAWKSMake that four in a row as Smith goes back to back slotting through a running shot from close range...four minutes ago the game was all tied up now the Hawks lead by 24.

  • Q2 24:46

GOAL HAWKSIt is three goals in the space of a couple of minutes to the Hawks as Smith burst forward into space to accept the pass and then dob the set shot.

  • Q2 23:07

GOAL HAWKSHodge outside the arc lets rip with a long kick, the ball hits the turf and taking a couple of lucky bounces, including around an opponent rolls through for a goal.

  • Q2 20:45

GOAL HAWKSLewis loitering, goal side, outside the stoppage accepts the hand pass and with no one between him and the goals takes off and after a settling stride bounces the goal through.

  • Q2 19:14

Once again the Suns level the scores through their exemplary scoring efficiency, that is five shots on goal for five straight majors.

  • Q2 17:37

GOAL SUNSThe Suns with a little bit of class as they find some space, they get the ball quickly and cleanly to the leading Dixon who pulls down the mark on the lead 40 out and goals.

  • Q2 15:47

Once again the Hawks are racking up the inside 50's, they have more than doubled the Suns so far this term.

  • Q2 12:52

GOAL HAWKSRioli runs forward into space, turns and takes the mark, he quickly goes inboard to Burgoyne, who had dashed forward and marks the ball converting the set shot.

  • Q2 10:57

The ball is trapped on the far wing at present as both sides struggle to break free, the Suns go backwards and then switch play looking for some space in which to work.

  • Q2 08:23

The Suns are making every post a winner, their accuracy in front of goal has kept them in this match the Hawks have five more scoring shots than they do.

  • Q2 07:07

GOAL HAWKSBennell receives the palm down and 12 out from goal lets fly over his shoulder with a tumbling kick, the ball loops high and true for a much needed goal.

  • Q2 05:11

Harbrow is having a good day at the office as he racks up yet another possession, obviously he is enjoying the conditions.

  • Q2 03:17

BEHIND HAWKSThe Hawks have started the second term full of run and they go further ahead with the Suns being forced to rush the behind.

  • Q2 00:56

GOAL HAWKSBruest cannot miss...he has kicked his 25th major in a row, picking up the ball 20 out he broke one tackle and then dribbled the ball through from 15 out!

  • Q2 00:00

SECOND QUARTERThe second term is underway at Aurora Stadium and still the rain continues to fall.

  • Q1 31:55

QUARTER TIMEThe Suns after a slow start go into the first break with the slenderest of leads. The Hawks had the better of the quarter but the Suns efficiency inside 50 proved the difference.

  • Q1 30:23

GOAL HAWKSGunston lobs the ball into the square where Bruest is lurking, he gathers running away from goal before turning around his opponent and tumbling the kick through.

  • Q1 28:04

Spangher with a long kick out of defence hits Sewell who takes a strong mark, he has been good in the opening term.

  • Q1 26:23

It is a stoppage to stoppage at the moment as both sides endeavour to lock the ball down and deny their opponent any chance of scoring...it is going to be a dour afternoon.

  • Q1 25:46

BEHIND HAWKSRoughead with a hurried snap sends the ball arcing high into the air, the wind catches it and pushes it off line for a behind.

  • Q1 24:38

It's a wiling if unattractive game at present, the ball is being moved forward through any means available as players try to cope with poor visibility and very wet conditions.

  • Q1 21:42

GOAL SUNSLynch juggles a tumbling mark after O'Meara thumps a hurried kick out of the centre of the ground. Lynch goes back and drills his second, Gold Coast by 8 points.

  • Q1 20:34

Thompson with a nice tackle wins the free after catching Schoenmakers' in possession. After a very slow start the visitors have settled really, really well.

  • Q1 18:46

GOAL SUNSThe Suns are in front, three inside 50's and they have two goals, this time courtesy of Ablett who grabbed the ball off the pack and kicked it low to skid it through!

  • Q1 17:01

GOAL SUNSLynch marked the ball outside the 50 metre arc but a 50 metre penalty, against Hodge on Ablett off the ball, sees the kick a certainty...Lynch kicks the Suns' first.

  • Q1 15:25

Bennell looked to have been impeded by Spangher but the Umpire saw it the other way and the Hawks have the clearing free kick.

  • Q1 12:45

BEHIND HAWKSWe've had a long delay while we wait on a score review, the ball was touched on the line and was sent upstairs...there is trouble with the communications and we have...a point!

  • Q1 11:27

The Suns continue to turn the ball over far too easily, a harried kick out of defensive fifty drops straight into the lap of Hawks' debutant, Litherland.

  • Q1 10:16

The Suns are still yet to get any sort of scoring opportunity, they are just struggling to get the ball into their attacking half.

  • Q1 08:46

Hodge jogging off with a cut over his eye, the rain is so heavy that players are shielding their faces at times.

  • Q1 07:21

The lights are on and the rain is pouring down on a cold, wet afternoon at Aurora Stadium, can the young Suns keep the bigger bodied Hawks at bay?

  • Q1 06:15

BEHIND HAWKSAnother score to the Hawks as the Suns are forced to concede the rushed behind to try and deny the Hawthorn a chance in the crowded goal square.

  • Q1 05:00

BEHIND HAWKSThe Suns are yet to go forward as Hawthorn add another behind off the boot of Schoenmakers, his long set shot from outside 50 was just off line.

  • Q1 04:15

GOAL HAWKSRoughead has no trouble guiding the first major of the afternoon through from 35 out, that was all too easy for the Hawks.

  • Q1 03:24

Hodge marks just inside the arc and the Suns are a little too lax in closing him down, he plays on quickly and hits the leading Roughead on the chest 35 out.

  • Q1 01:00

BEHIND HAWKSThe Hawks draw first blood as Gunston marks on the lead, his kick, which looked good off the boot, was caught by the wind and thumped through for a behind.

  • Q1 00:04

FIRST BOUNCEThe ball is bounced and we are underway in Tassie.

  • Q1 00:03

The Suns will have to battle the conditions as well as the opposition with the current temperature a chilly 9.7 degrees, that's not Gold coast weather!

  • Q1 00:01

The men in the vests are, Duryea for the Hawks and Lonergan for the Suns.

  • Q1 00:00

Welcome to Aurora Stadium and the clash between the Hawks and the Suns, the Suns fresh off a win against the Cats now face the rampant Hawks.

Suns eclipsed by rain and ruthless Hawks

Matt Suckling gets a handball away under pressure from Jarrod Harbrow during the Hawks' big win

HAWTHORN has shrugged off a brief arm-wrestle with Gold Coast to power away with a nine-goal spurt and thrash the Suns by 53 points in wet conditions in Launceston.

However a hamstring injury in the final quarter to Cyril Rioli put a dampener on the result for the Hawks as the star forward was forced off the ground after pulling up sore while stretching for a loose ball.

Led superbly by Luke Hodge and with Isaac Smith and Luke Breust providing their usual impressive impact on the scoreboard, the Hawks put the game to bed just after half-time.

Five talking points: Hawthorn v Gold Coast

The rain was a constant presence throughout the game with downpours usually coinciding with the start of each term, but the Hawks made light of the atrocious conditions to play smart contested football that left the Suns looking lightweight.

When Charlie Dixon slotted a goal for Gold Coast mid-way through the second quarter, it brought them level with Hawthorn but that was as good as it would get for Guy McKenna's men, who conceded the next nine goals to turn a close contest into a second-half training run for the Hawks.

The spread of goalkickers for Hawthorn will have sent a shiver through the rest of the League with nine players slotting majors, and the ever-accurate Breust and his skipper heading the scoring chart with three each.

Gary Ablett put in his usual brilliant shift, running himself into the ground to present at almost every contest but he had few helpers with Harley Bennell and Jack Martin notably quiet. The Little Master had 45 disposals, a record for any player at Aurora Stadium.

Jarrod Harbrow was reported in the final quarter for striking Breust to complete a dirty day for the Suns.

Outside of the usual suspects for Hawthorn like Jordan Lewis (28 disposals), Liam Shiels (25) and Shaun Burgoyne (20), Jonathon Ceglar more than justified Brendon Bolton's decision to keep him in the side ahead of Ben McEvoy, with the former Magpie dominating the ruck contests and slotting a goal.

A concern for the premiers was what appeared to be another twinge to Rioli's troublesome hamstring, which saw the star forward brought to the bench in the final quarter

The 24-year-old had contributed a goal in a typically livewire performance before having ice and strapping applied to his leg.

Rioli has already missed part of the Hawks' injury-hit premiership defence in 2014 with hamstring issues.

The Hawks couldn't quite boost their percentage enough to take top spot on the ladder, with Port Adelaide still to take on Adelaide in Sunday's Showdown.

Bolton's men take on North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Friday night, although the interim coach may have to make way for Alastair Clarkson by then.

The Suns remain in eighth spot courtesy of Essendon's loss to Geelong, but will need a vast improvement on this performance when they host Collingwood next Saturday.
