Match  Feed

  • Q4 30:40

Full Time and Carlton are back in the winners circle as they puncture Gold Coast's top 8 ambitions with an energetic and errant display enough to see them hold off a late surging Suns outfit by 39.

  • Q4 30:20

BEHIND BLUESA chance for the Blues to crack triple-digits falls by the wayside as Menzel turns a sharp handball to McLean who streaks away from the circle to shank a running shot from 40m out.

  • Q4 27:30

GOAL BLUESThat's Carlton's third goal in the second half as Gibbs roosts it from 60m out where Tuohy runs decoy to allow Waite a free grab. From 30m out to the left, Waite turns home his fifth.

  • Q4 24:40

BEHIND SUNSSloppy work in defence from Murphy as he leaves the ball behind before O'Meara turns onto it, works his way to the left and snaps the ball across his shoulder from 30m out. Wide..

  • Q4 23:20

BEHIND BLUESKolodjashnij serves up a tasty dish for McLean as the former's scrubbed kick takes a wicked turn and ends up in McLean's lap. McLean's effort hits the post from 40m out however..

  • Q4 22:05

Casboult looks to be a little frustrated as he's hard lead out of the goalsquare is ignored by Murphy and then Menzel; could have been in business if the ball was served straight down the middle..

  • Q4 19:00

GOAL SUNSThey're getting closer with 7 minutes remaining as Bennell's hard work down the right wing sees him spotting up O'Meara five metres out. From point blank range, O'Meara delivers..

  • Q4 18:00

BEHIND SUNSThis is starting to grind Blues supporters as Carlton fail to muscle up in defence before the ball's speared to Lynch's lead. From 45m out, Lynch's shot is screwed across the face.

  • Q4 16:55

BEHIND SUNSThe Blues are still looking to run the clock down as Kolodjashnij takes the role of pinch-hitter and smacks a long bomb towards home from 48m out; always travelling wide to the left.

  • Q4 15:00

BEHIND BLUESIt's moved forward hastily from the Blues as Graham works his way free before trying to grubber home an effort from 40m out which is punched through on the last line.

  • Q4 13:50

GOAL SUNSBack to back majors for the Suns for the first time as Wood's attempted clearing kick is cleaned up by Sexton who spots up Lynch. From 15m out to the right, Lynch works it home.

  • Q4 11:15

GOAL SUNSBennell shorts it up to Harbrow's lead as the Blues look to backtrack slowly after Curnow concedes a free. From almost in front on the arc, Harbrow curls home a cracking drop punt.

  • Q4 09:10

GOAL BLUESCarlton stop the rot as Waite rounds his opponent before handballing back to Judd who spots McLean alone and fires a 20m handball in his direction; McLean makes no mistake with a banana.

  • Q4 07:05

BEHIND SUNSBy the letter of the law it's a free kick against Stanley as he shoves Murphy out of the contest; instead it's not paid and Stanley lines up from 30; justice prevails as it's shanked.

  • Q4 06:35

Quality's really starting to lack in this contest as both sides are managing to go coastto-coast but are guilty of horrendous turnovers. Both McKenna and Malthouse would be livid in their boxes.

  • Q4 04:50

A battle inside the battle for the Blues as Bell and Waite are engaged in a tussle to be the first to five goals with both stranded on four presently. Carlton look to have tapered off considerably.

  • Q4 02:50

Hard going in the opening stages as the Suns dominate possession but are still guilty of turning it over cheaply as Matera looks inside50 but is brilliantly smothered by an urgent effort from Thomas.

  • Q4 00:05

Final term is underway at Etihad where it's the Blues leading by 46..

  • Q3 28:05

Three Quarter Time and it's a 46 point lead for the Blues who looked to have relaxed late in the term to keep the door ever so ajar for the Suns. Early goals from the visitors and it could be game on.

  • Q3 26:50

BEHIND BLUESCarlton wasting their opportunities to put the Suns to the sword as Murphy dribbles a kick towards home from the left pocket but has it snick the post padding on the way through.

  • Q3 25:10

BEHIND BLUESFresh from missing a shot it's now Judd who sets this one up as he lifts his eyes to spot Ellard's lead 45 metres out; it's released fine enough but shanks away to the left side late..

  • Q3 24:00

BEHIND BLUESJudd's got two but can't add to his tally as he tries to replicate the effort of Bell from earlier in the term against the right boundary; Judd's kick is shallow and wide right..

  • Q3 23:05

Carlton have gone to sleep over the last 10 minutes and with the Suns starting to find their feet in defence, this encounter's hardly over by any stretch. It's the Blues by 43 points with six to go.

  • Q3 20:25

GOAL SUNSFinally the Suns manage to work their way through the Blues maze as Kolodjashnij keeps the ball alive to Matera who handpasses to Swallow who bananas it home from point blank..

  • Q3 17:55

BEHIND SUNSA trio of minors for the Gold Coast as Day elects not to look upfield for any leading options and throws it onto his boot from 52m out; it rides the journey but it's always wide right..

  • Q3 15:55

BEHIND SUNSSwallow throws this one away for the Gold Coast as after receiving a shove in the back inside the goalsquare, he somehow shanks his shot from 20m out in front. Blues breathe easy.

  • Q3 15:00

Too lazy from the Blues as Gibbs receives the ball in open pasture through the middle and elects to head to centre wing where Jamison's pace isn't enough to reel the ball in at pace; throwin..

  • Q3 14:30

BEHIND SUNSMartin's pace once again at the fore as he races out to gather the ball at half-forward. With a tight angle from the left Martin's long bomb is good enough but swerves late; poster..

  • Q3 13:05

Carlton keep knocking but Gold Coast have managed to keep them at bay for six minutes as White releases an ugly effort which Broughton cuts off in front of McLean's lead inside 50. Suns persisting..

  • Q3 11:15

O'Meara continues to crack in for the Suns but he's the only one making an effort with the top ballwinners being Simpson (21), Judd (20) and Thomas, Murphy and Gibbs all with 17..

  • Q3 09:05

Simpsons shows his enormous heart and neversay-die attitude as he stands one-on-one with Martin and keeps the ball alive no less than three times with multiple defensive punches. Incredible feat.

  • Q3 06:30

GOAL BLUESIt's Bell's day as he leads hard to mark the ball inside the right pocket and set up 30m out; not electing to go the banana, he keeps it straight and slots it home dead-straight. WOW.

  • Q3 04:55

BEHIND BLUESIt's the usual suspects for the Blues as Judd rids himself of Longergan's tag and spears the ball down Waite's throat; Waite's denied his fifth as it sails to the right from 48m out..

  • Q3 03:20

BEHIND SUNSLynch with a chance to post the opener for the Suns as he turns sharply to snap over his right shoulder but sees Jamison carrying it over the line as it bobbles late from six metres out.

  • Q3 01:55

Gold Coast appear to be hungrier on the ball as the possibility of playing finals football is drilled into them at the HT break. Carlton look to be steady in defence with the Suns streaming forward.

  • Q3 00:05

Hostilities resume as the ball is bounced for the start of the third term..

  • Q2 34:00

Half Time and it's Carlton's engine room which is running rampant as allowed ample room to move, they've cut the Suns to shreds to lead by 46 points at the break. Long way back for the Gold Coast..

  • Q2 32:30

GOAL BLUESThey missed out in the first but Carlton get the 'junk-time' goal as Bell turns around his man from 45m out and somehow swirls his shot home off his right boot. That's his third..

  • Q2 31:10

GOAL SUNSO'Meara's vision is something to behold as he swings inboard where Stanley drops the overhead mark but remains well grounded to take in his own spillage to dribble it home from five out.

  • Q2 29:40

GOAL BLUESTwo in 60 seconds for Carlton as McLean's hard work from the middle finds Bell who rides the challenge from Swallow before bending it back off his left from 40m out. Blues by 46.

  • Q2 27:55

GOAL BLUESSheehan shows he's got some good times ahead as he threads the needle to find Waite's chest 45m out. Releasing from just inside the chalk, Waite guides home his 4th for the day..

  • Q2 25:20

BEHIND SUNSNice, clever build up from the Suns as they counter out of defence before the ball falls to Matera who rewards Gorringe's lead. From 30m out, Gorringe slides it across the face..

  • Q2 24:10

BEHIND BLUESIt's Curnow who manages to find room out the back as he spots room, runs into and releases a a shot on the fly which weaves to the left from 35 metres out. Blues out by 35 points..

  • Q2 21:30

GOAL BLUESCarlton ride their luck as White and Menzel both look to be tackled with it before the ball sinks to the top of the square where Judd flashes past, swivels his hips and threads it home.

  • Q2 18:55

Curnow with the advantage call as he bombs the ball into the air but doesn't have a tall target up front apart from McLean who's pushed off the ball; good defending from the Suns on this occasion..

  • Q2 16:20

We've reached an interesting part of the term as there's now been five minutes since the last goal has been kicked; as has been the pattern, you'd imagine the Suns might manage to conjure up the next.

  • Q2 13:50

Carlton's speed when breaking from defence into attack is starting to tell as Simpson motors towards centre wing before spearing it into Gibbs. From the boundary, Gibbs sprays it across the face..

  • Q2 11:55

GOAL BLUESWe're going goal-for-goal at Etihad as Sheehan sizes up his first goal in the top league before it drifts to be taken in overhead by Gibbs. From 25m out in front, Gibbs makes no mistake.

  • Q2 10:00

GOAL SUNSMartin with blistering pace as he fires out the side of the pack inside the Suns goalsquare and nabs the ball to his chest. From 40m, he squeezes his shot home. Suns still in it..

  • Q2 08:20

GOAL BLUESGold Coast are caught ball-watching as Judd frees himself before feeding a handpass to Waite, who left alone, snaps home easily for his third from 35m out in front. Unbelievable.

  • Q2 05:55

BEHIND BLUESWhite tries to feed in Waite as he slaps a ball towards the goalsquare which looks to have beaten Waite over the line; it's sent upstairs to review and eventually red-lighted. Correct.

  • Q2 04:50

GOAL SUNSHarbrow keeps the Suns going as he gets out the back of the pack and receives a handpass before bombing home beautifully from 35m out, tight against the left boundary line.

  • Q2 04:00

BEHIND BLUESCurnow with a freakish piece of skill as he tries to backheel the ball home but has it touched off the boot from 10 out. Blues could be out by 40 but it's only 27 points the difference.

  • Q2 02:40

BEHIND BLUESIt's a raffle atop the Blues 50m arc as Waite pumps a handball back to McLean who releases a scrubber of an effort which rolls wide left from the moment it hit his boot from 45m out.

  • Q2 00:55

GOAL BLUESYet another quicksilver start for the Blues as Murphy gets out the back and slides it straight into Waite's lead. From tight in the right pocket, Waite guides it home. Blues by 25.

  • Q2 00:05

The ball's bounced and we're underway in the second term

  • Q1 28:00

Quarter Time and it's been all the Blues thus far who have hassled the Suns midfield into copious errors but have only conjured up four majors for their efforts. Carlton by 19 at the first break..

  • Q1 27:25

BEHIND BLUESThe Blues almost secure themselves some 'junk-time' points as a chain of handballs sees Judd and Menzel feeding Gibbs who snaps it to the line before Waite spills it over the chalk..

  • Q1 24:55

BEHIND BLUESGraham almost conjures up a miracle snap from the right pocket as he throws it onto his boot to look for Menzel but has it punched over the line at the last moment; fair crack.

  • Q1 22:05

GOAL BLUESGold Coast continue to allow Carlton too much room to move as a ball struck out of defence is snared by Gibbs who plays in Thomas who bombs truly from 48 metres out. Blues by 17.

  • Q1 19:30

Gold Coast escape danger as Broughton looks to take on the tackle on the arc and is captured brilliantly by Graham who wraps him up balland-all and flings him over the boundary; saved by chalk.

  • Q1 17:20

Waite could have a rather large bag of majors if he can switch his radar on as he marks well in front 50m from home; from the right he produces a monster punt which is always heading out of play.

  • Q1 15:05

Great little battle up front the Suns as Lynch and Rowe go about their duties with the latter producing a marvellous lastditch fist which brings the ball to ground which allows Curnow to clear..

  • Q1 14:30

Bad news for the Blues as Yarran's day is done with the speedy halfback flanker escorted to the bench with his right leg looking to be the concern. Graham takes off the vest and enters the fray.

  • Q1 12:45

GOAL SUNSA much needed steadier for the Gold Coast as Tuohy coughs it up in midfield which enables Lynch to drive it to Hall on the lead. From 40m out in front, the Suns are on the board.

  • Q1 11:05

GOAL BLUESThat's their third in a row as Bell sharks the spillage 30m out from the Blues goal, takes possession, hits, spins and thrusts himself into the goal square where he bombs it home..

  • Q1 10:50

No defensive pressure from the Suns as Waite marks on the lead 45 out but hooks a shot across the top of the square before Tuohy shepherds the ball out. Carlton need to start hitting the scoreboard.

  • Q1 08:30

Carlton guilty of overusing the ball early as Waite takes a mark off balance before squaring it to Judd who looks wider for McLean but drops it over his head 55 metres out; the Suns mop up. Wasteful.

  • Q1 06:10

BEHIND SUNSGold Coast manage to scramble it forward for the first time as Lynch squeezes off a shot from the top of the goalsquare before being hauled to ground; just wide to the left..

  • Q1 03:55

GOAL BLUESAnother costly turn over and this one stings as a loose ball at the back is gobbled up by Waite who turns into an open goal square where he roosts it home. Blues up and about early.

  • Q1 02:55

Early running with the Blues as they look to cut off Gold Coast's angles as Judd receives on centre wing and bangs it to where Henderson would normally be standing; cutoff well by Broughton..

  • Q1 00:50

GOAL BLUESRapid fire opening for Carlton as Menzel reels the ball in from the middle and bombs it forward where Judd tracks it in over his head. From the arc, Judd pilots it home with ease..

  • Q1 00:05

There's the siren and we're up and about at Etihad Stadium..

  • Q1 00:00

The roof is open at Etihad where Carlton, with their finals chances dashed for 2014, hope to put a dent in the Gold Coast Suns aspirations with victory on a fine day. First bounce is in 15 minutes..

Stars back in form as Blues waltz past sorry Suns

Highlights: Carlton v Gold Coast The Blues and Suns clash in round 20

Kade Simpson was again superb in defence for Carlton as he left Sean Lemmens and the Suns in his wake

CARLTON'S finals hopes have already sailed but the Blues are intent on shaping the eight, beating a fading Gold Coast team by 39 points on Saturday afternoon at Etihad Stadium.

The Blues outmuscled their opponents from the beginning and were never headed, winning 14.13 (97) to 8.10 (58) and leaving the Suns facing an uphill battle to play finals.

Five talking points: Carlton v Gold Coast

The pattern of the match would have suggested it was the Blues with their top-eight hopes on the line.

They out-tackled their opponents, were more desperate in pursuit of the contested ball and ran harder to create options for their teammates.

The result left Gold Coast with a 10-9 record, and they could be one game and significant percentage outside the top eight by the end of the round if Collingwood beats West Coast on Sunday.

The player to benefit most from the Suns falling stocks was tall forward Jarrad Waite, who continued a superb run of form since returning to the team in round 18 to kick five goals and take nine marks.

With his future at Visy Park up in the air, Waite has kicked a total of 12 goals and taken 27 marks in his past three games.

Young Blue Tom Bell, meanwhile, kicked a career-best four goals, while debutant Ciaran Sheehan was able to play a full game on debut, impressing with his ball use.

Former captain Chris Judd was superb and at his attacking best, bursting through packs to win nine clearances among his 27 touches, also kicking two goals.

Bryce Gibbs (28 possessions), Kade Simpson (30) and Dale Thomas (27) were all prolific.

It wasn't all good news for Carlton with utility Chris Yarran substituted early in the first quarter with a calf strain.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast midfielder Michael Rischitelli left the game in the second quarter with an apparent hip complaint and Trent McKenzie sat out the fourth quarter with concussion.

Without injured captain Gary Ablett, the Suns' lack of a game-turner in the midfield was obvious.

Young on-ballers Harley Bennell, Jaeger O'Meara and Dion Prestia have all seen their numbers drop without Ablett, combining for 8.2 fewer possessions a game before Saturday's clash.

Bennell (27 disposals) and O'Meara (26) won their share on Saturday, but didn't impact the contest like they could alongside Ablett. Prestia was tagged out of the game by Andrew Carrazzo.

"There's some very good players in that side, they're coached well, and they had a lot to lose today, which made it more important for us to measure up," Carlton coach Mick Malthouse said

"It wasn't a good second half, but the damage was done in the first half and we were able to hold on to that lead – we ended up with a half time lead of 46 and won by 39.

"It's good for our morale and it's good for cementing in the mind that this is the way we want to go … we want to play this type of football."

Sensing an easy kill under an open roof, Carlton put its foot down in the second quarter and kicked four unanswered goals in an 18-minute burst that left them with a match-winning lead at the main break.

Judd burst onto a loose ball in attack and converted on the run, Gibbs took a contested mark in the goal-square and Bell kicked two outstanding goals in three minutes from opposite pockets.

Waite could do no wrong, forcing the Suns to replace Steven May with Rory Thompson as his opponent, with Thompson performing well in the second half.

Suns coach Guy McKenna made sure Simpson and Thomas were more accountable across half-back after the main break and the Blues' scoring dried up as a result with both teams kicking 1.4 in the third quarter.

The heat was well and truly out of the game when the Suns kicked three goals to two in the final term.

"Our boys came to play, there's no doubt about that, but our execution killed us," McKenna said.

"Certainly our kicking efficiency was below 60 (per cent) in the first half and – surprise, surprise – in the second half it's up close to 70 per cent."

Midfielder David Swallow was probably his team's best player on a disappointing day for the Suns, finishing with nine tackles and 19 possessions.

Gold Coast faces Port Adelaide at Metricon Stadium next week while the Blues square off against Geelong at Etihad Stadium.
