Commentary

  • Q4 29:40

Full Time and the Kangaroos have defied the odds, outlasting a spirited outing from the Power which saw Port lead at multiple stages before Harvey and Dal Santo guided the 'Roos home; North win by 7.

  • Q4 28:20

BEHIND POWERBoak's now forced into a hurried shot but leaves his effort high and wide from the left of goal as the Power chase a quick, quick reply. They'll run out of time with 45 seconds left..

  • Q4 27:30

BEHIND POWERAnd that would appear to be the ball game as Impey sprays his set shot from 30 metres out, inside the right pocket. North fans; there's 90 seconds remaining with the 'Roos up by 8.

  • Q4 26:50

GOAL KANGAROOSIS THAT THE CLINCHER? Harvey, as 'Roos fans would no doubt be used to, may have just won this for the Kanga's as screws it home perfectly from 52m out in front!

  • Q4 26:10

Time for keepingsoff as Harvey tries to work the ball back into play as it dribbles towards centre half-forward inside the 'Roos attacking 50. Three minutes to go with the 'Roos up by three..

  • Q4 24:15

Five minutes remain at Etihad and if you're a Kangaroos fan, you'd be feeling the pinch as Port try and thrust forward but are thwarted by an impressive rolling defence from the 'Roos. Three in it.

  • Q4 21:10

GOAL KANGAROOS'ROOS BACK IN FRONT! The see-saw continues as Dal Santo spots up Adams all alone at half-forward. Playing on he hands it back to Dal Santo who threads it through from 45m out.

  • Q4 18:55

GOAL POWERPORT BACK IN FRONT! Try and choose the winner as Cassisi spots up an open Broadbent who fancies his chances from 60m out and unloads a STUNNER which spears through the middle.

  • Q4 16:50

GOAL KANGAROOSCometh the hour, cometh the Harvey as the ball is pumped deep inside the 'Roos right pocket where Harvey gathers, steadies and rolls it home superbly from eight metres out!

  • Q4 15:40

GOAL KANGAROOSAnd there's the major that you felt was coming but it's via an unlikely source as Jacobs turns impressively in traffic and hoists it home at goal-post height from 45m out. Game ON.

  • Q4 13:40

BEHIND KANGAROOSThomas almost scrambles home another for North as he pounces on the loose ball at the top of the goal square but sees his effort touched by Hombsch with three metres to spare.

  • Q4 12:55

BEHIND POWERPerilously close for the Power as Westhoff works his frame in front inside the left pocket and immediately throws his boot at it; falling in his effort it was always drifting wide.

  • Q4 10:55

Mullett with an immense defensive effort as Wingard fancies his chances with the ball hitting the deck inside the right pocket and snaps around his body; straight into Mullett's outstretched hands..

  • Q4 08:50

GOAL KANGAROOSNorth still in the hunt as Petrie looks to control an overhead mark, loses his marbles and sees his team-mate Goldstein snaffle up the loose ball to grubber home from 6 metres out.

  • Q4 07:50

North have taken the risky decision to leave themselves a man short in defence as they load up their forward line in their pursuit of a pivotal reply. With over 14 minutes remaining, it's Port by 15..

  • Q4 05:10

BEHIND KANGAROOSA super series of handballs releases Atley as he tears off through midfield before banging a long effort towards home which is accompanied through by a diving Carlile.

  • Q4 02:40

GOAL POWERThe crucial first goal of the term is Port's as furious counter sees Schulz marking 20m out from the sticks inside the left pocket. With a minimal angle, he bends it home. Port by 16.

  • Q4 02:15

Black has a chance to drag the defecit back to single digits as he completes a mark thirdman up in the contest. Taking the ball to 52 metres out to release, his effort is always dropping short.

  • Q3 30:30

This is following a ripping script as Port have again controlled the early stages of the term only for North's pressure allowing them to close the defecit late; it's the Power by 10 at the last..

  • Q3 29:10

BEHIND KANGAROOSAdams with an opportunity to snap a golden goal as he works his way behind Currie in the marking contest, snaps off his right from 8 metres out and sprays it to the right!!

  • Q3 27:50

Jacobs attacks the ball hard inside the 'Roos forward 50 before the throwin is worked out of defence cleverly by Polec; it doesn't travel far however as Grima pumps it back where Lobbe intercepts.

  • Q3 25:50

BEHIND KANGAROOSNorth are starting to create loose men everywhere inside 50 as Dal Santo rams a low dribbler onto his boot which is dived on and pushed through on the line by Carlile..

  • Q3 25:15

BEHIND KANGAROOSBastinac tries his hand at a rushed shot from distance which again shanks to the wrong side for the hosts. There's no doubt that the Kangaroos are finishing the term the stronger.

  • Q3 24:55

Another player in the hands of trainers as Hansen heads to the bench to obtain assistance for what appears to be a dislocated finger. The game's developed into a war of attrition; casualties galore.

  • Q3 22:40

GOAL KANGAROOSA rarity for the Kangaroos as Thompson has an opportunity to drift forward and doesn't let his club down by turning home a tidy drop punt from 40m out on the run; 'Roos close to 13.

  • Q3 21:30

BEHIND KANGAROOSThey're inching closer with minor scores as Thompson turns in traffic and scrambles a shot towards the goalsquare which Bastinac just fails to poke home; 'Roos are lifting.

  • Q3 20:50

We're at that point where the next goal for either side will prove pivotal. If the Kanga's can scrub one, it will bring them back into it whereby if it's Port, it may just shut the door on North.

  • Q3 18:20

BEHIND KANGAROOSIt's beginning to become a little panicky for the Kangaroos as Wells tries pirouetting and releasing from tight on the boundary at half forward but shanks his shot to the right..

  • Q3 17:15

An update on injuries sees Macmillan of most concern for the 'Roos whilst the Power are nursing injuries to Schulz, Monfries and now Wingard. Can North take advantage of a depleted Port?

  • Q3 15:05

GOAL POWERFreakish effort from Wingard as he stays at the bottom of a pack, scoops up the loose ball, ducks a tackle, falls over and still somehow dribbles it home from 6m out; he's hurt though.

  • Q3 14:20

BEHIND KANGAROOSHarvey almost provides a little bit of magic to drag the 'Roos closer as Thomas' low punt is snapped up well by the North veteran before his spinning effort is dragged wide left..

  • Q3 13:10

GOAL POWERAnd that's a stark reminder of what Port's run can do as Westhoff bangs long from the centre square where Wingard receives at the back, plays on, and blazes into an open goal square..

  • Q3 10:55

GOAL POWERHartlett shows genuine strength to wrestle free of Atley before leading up to take the grab 40 metres from home; releasing from 35 metres out, it's through; North need to counter..

  • Q3 09:45

Port's depth will now be seriously tested as Monfries tries to utilise his pace to get onto the end of a long bomb forward and looks to have torn his hamstring in pursuit 20m out; Pittard's activated.

  • Q3 07:30

GOAL POWERPort Adelaide with deadly counter as White is freed in midfield and streams forward to put a ball over Westhoff's head; the latter runs onto it and dribbles it home from close range.

  • Q3 06:50

BEHIND KANGAROOSMullett now registers a minor as he gallops onto Dal Santo's slick handball and bombs long towards the square from the right; this one is pushed to the left of centre though.

  • Q3 05:20

BEHIND KANGAROOSThe ball's being slung between both half-forward lines with furious speed now as Harvey backtracks to Gibson who unleashes from tight inside the left pocket but hooks it near side.

  • Q3 04:05

BEHIND POWERPort almost with the immediate response as Ebert loads up on the fly from just inside the 50m arc and splays it across the face of goal. Is this one going to turn into a shoot-out..?

  • Q3 03:05

GOAL KANGAROOSA fantastic answer from the 'Roos as Thomas shoves Wines off the ball before linking with Mullett who bangs home precisely with a long bomb from 55 metres out. 'Roos by 1.

  • Q3 00:50

GOAL POWERBANG! Just like that the Power are out of the gates in the third term as Monfries works a handball to Boak who shoves it onto his left boot to snap it home from 25 metres out..

  • Q2 32:20

Half Time and this one is heading to the wire you'd imagine as the Kangaroos have fought hard to thwart Port Adelaide's hard run in order to take a slender onepoint lead into the long break..

  • Q2 30:30

BEHIND POWERMonfries with the opportunity to steal the lead late in the term as he clutches the mark and heads back for a shot from 35 metres out with a 30 degree angle; it's wide to the right..

  • Q2 29:10

BEHIND POWERAnd it's Wines again who intercepts an errant defensive clearance before setting up his shot from 50m out, tight against the right boundary; it clicks the woodwork on the way through.

  • Q2 28:50

Panic stations inside the 'Roos defensive 50 as a series of hashed clearances and punches sees Wines snapping from 20m out before it falls short where Bastinac mops up the danger. Two minutes remain.

  • Q2 26:10

This could be MASSIVE for the Power as Schulz looks to clear a ball through midfield and hammers his right ankle to Dal Santo's forearm as the latter smothered the ball; Schulz limping badly.

  • Q2 23:55

Lateral movement from the 'Roos as Grima heads long inside looking for Black who slips at the last moment as he attempted to pull in a chest mark; the Kangaroos with all the running; lead is 3 points.

  • Q2 21:50

GOAL KANGAROOSNorth starting to open up this encounter as Macmillan leads hard to the left forward pocket before his stretch reels in the punt. From 38m out to the left, Macmillan pumps it through.

  • Q2 19:40

GOAL KANGAROOSNorth are inching closer as Harvey is denied a clear holding-the-ball against Hombsch before the attacking ball-up is sharked by Thomas who dashes into an open goal-square. Slick.

  • Q2 18:15

BEHIND POWERMacmillan is livid as he's pinged for high contact on Wingard wih the latter making a meal of his overhead mark deep in the right pocket; justice is served as it's sprayed wide.

  • Q2 16:20

GOAL KANGAROOSCunnington's tap from the centre sees a long ball hammered inside the 'Roos 50 where a series of deflections falls to Black who quickly snaps from 30m out in front; it's all goooood.

  • Q2 15:20

GOAL POWERPort Adelaide with the quick reply however as Atley gets into the back of Monfries and shoves him to ground inside-50. From 30m out in front, Monfries pilots it home. Port by 14.

  • Q2 12:45

GOAL KANGAROOSAn important response from North as Petrie's strong hands sees him clunking an overhead mark before he fires a handball to Mullett who rams it home all alone in the goal-square..

  • Q2 09:40

GOAL POWERPerhaps the football gods are on Port's side after all as Schulz then receives a favourable decision to snap home from in front of the right behind posts 10m out..

  • Q2 08:40

BEHIND POWERA remarkable decision as Impey rises strongly to take in Westhoff's long bomb before the ball is punched out of his grasp; unbelievably the mark doesn't stand as it's rushed through..

  • Q2 08:00

Lobbe has absolutely flattened the field umpire as he backed into the contest and ensured he received the full weight of Lobbe in his back. Interestingly though there's no report; ump's okay too.

  • Q2 06:10

Port's run has been stymied by North as they effectively bottle up Wingard's forward 50 entry before they confidently chip the ball around; the phase ends on centre wing with the ball rolling out.

  • Q2 03:05

BEHIND POWERTrading minors as Polec receives a fortunate free for the slightest push-in-the-back but pokes his set shot too far to the right from 45 metres out. 'Roos arguably look the better..

  • Q2 01:30

BEHIND KANGAROOSAlmost a dream start for the 'Roos as Harvey tries to weave his magic from 40m out inside the left pocket and dribbles an encouraging effort just wide. Terrible bounce.

  • Q1 30:10

Quarter Time and whilst it was Port who jumped out of the gate brightly, it's been the Kangaroos who have quietly and confidently chipped away at the lead ever since. Power by 7 at the first change.

  • Q1 29:30

The crowd rise as one as Greenwood loops a handball over the top inside the left forward pocket to Harvey who steadies himself before steering a low kick into Boak on the goalline! Unbelievable..

  • Q1 27:50

BEHIND KANGAROOSHolding-the-ball all day as hard work from Adams sees him receiving the subsequent free hemmed against the left boundary 20m out. Trying to banana it around, it hits the post.

  • Q1 26:15

BEHIND KANGAROOSPetrie's first touch of the day almost pays dividends as he hunts down Bastinac's assist to mark 40m from home. Not too shabby a release from 38m out but it's wide right.

  • Q1 24:00

GOAL KANGAROOSNorth stay in the hunt as Thomas receives the free for a front-on effort which slips up high. Smacking it from 48m out with a 45 degree angle, Thomas weaves it home. Port by 9.

  • Q1 22:05

Dal Santo is away from the centre bounce as his pace sees him (supposedly) clear of Impey before the latter gets an important late touch which sees Dal Santo spray his running shot out of play..

  • Q1 20:30

GOAL POWERUnlucky call against the 'Roos as Adams looks sure to receive a free for high contact before Schulz roves the loose ball to snap home over his shoulder from 15m out in front..

  • Q1 18:25

BEHIND POWERIt's that man again in Monfries as he evades his man in order to secure a chest mark tight inside the right forward pocket. Only centimetres in it as his set shot collects woodwork..

  • Q1 16:00

GOAL KANGAROOSTwo in quick succession for the 'Roos as a free kick is quickly relayed to Harvey who from the fringes of the arc, bombs it home with aplomb. Kangaroos back in the contest..

  • Q1 14:40

GOAL KANGAROOSA pivotal response from North as Thomas stays grounded in order to read the ball over the back before he dribbles through a pinpoint grubber from 30 metres out. Important.

  • Q1 13:35

GOAL POWERThis is becoming worrying for the 'Roos as they fail to pressure Hartlett through the heart of midfield before he loads up and makes sure of this one from 65m out on the fly. Impressive.

  • Q1 12:05

BEHIND POWERBrief respite for the Kangaroos as Butcher's shocking kick release sees his set shot sprayed to the right from 35 metres out, inside the right pocket. All Port Adelaide presently.

  • Q1 09:55

GOAL POWERFreedom aplenty for the Power midfielders as Wines leads hard into space to mark 35 metres out from home. With only a slight angle to speak of, Wines guides it through. Looking good.

  • Q1 09:02

BEHIND POWERNot sure why they're allowing this man to have space as Wingard receives the tap-down from the ball-up and luckily for North shanks a kick wide from 30 metres out to the right..

  • Q1 06:40

The ball's back to being trapped inside Port's attacking 50 as Currie is found leading hard up the ground. Back inside their defensive 50 the 'Roos head as they try and shift the Power around.

  • Q1 04:55

GOAL POWERPort have the last two players closest to goal as a long ball falls out the back where Monfries works his man under it, picks up the loose ball and scurries into an open goal square..

  • Q1 03:05

North however dig in deep inside their attacking 50 as the ball's eventually cleared out of danger by Cunnington; that's his third touch for the 'Roos in as many minutes. Solid opening.

  • Q1 01:50

It's the Power looking sharp and incisive inside the first two minutes as Polec's speared pass from the left flank finds the first of Thompson who smashes it out of bounds at centre halfforward..

  • Q1 00:00

It's off to Etihad as the Kangaroos face one of the most difficult tasks in modern footy, as they confront the Power, who are arguably the fittest team in the league. First bounce in 10 minutes..

Lindsay Thomas celebrates a goal against Port Adelaide on Sunday

NORTH Melbourne has come from behind to overrun a wounded Port Adelaide, with veteran Brent Harvey kicking crucial late goals to seal the seven-point win at Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.

After a stuttering start to the season, the Kangaroos found their mojo in the second half and reeled in the Power to win 14.13 (97) to 13.12 (90).

Harvey was well-held for most of the evening by Matt White, but he rose when it mattered to kick two goals in the last quarter and seal the win.

Port, who had been unstoppable in final quarters before round three, was hit by injuries to forward Angus Monfries, substituted with a hamstring injury, and Chad Wingard, who played through an ankle complaint.

The Kangaroos, meanwhile, lost Jamie MacMillan to a right leg injury, with defender Lachlan Hansen also sidelined for a period in the third term with a finger injury.

Even umpire Jason Armstrong had an early end to his day after being bowled over by Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe in the second quarter.

Young midfielders Ben Cunnington (30 possessions and nine clearances) and Levi Greenwood (34 and six inside 50s) were outstanding for the Kangaroos, with Harvey and Lindsay Thomas kicking three goals each.

Ruckman Todd Goldstein (33 hit-outs and a goal) and veteran Nick Dal Santo (30 possessions and a goal) also lifted in the final term.

"All it did was really confirm what I've always thought about Ben Cunnington," North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said after the match.

"He's just a terrific player in the contest and he was enormous for us today.

"And Levi Greenwood's just the player you love to coach because he's just a natural competitor – he knows no other way than 100-miles an hour at the ball and he's a good athlete. I thought he was fantastic for us."

It looked to be a case of Port Adelaide by how much in the first quarter as it raced to a 20-point lead with the first three goals of the game.

North Melbourne worked back into the contest, chiefly through Thomas, who kicked his three goals in the first half, and Cunnington, who had 11 possessions (seven contested) and four clearances in the second term.

By half-time the Roos had snatched a one-point lead, but a concern for coach Brad Scott would have been his team's inability to turn clearance wins into inside 50s, trailing in that indicator 18-30 at the main break.

The lack of forward entries hurt North Melbourne's tall forwards, with Drew Petrie, Aaron Black and Daniel Currie combining for three marks and one goal in the first half.

Petrie finished the match goalless and with just four possessions, with Port defender Alipate Carlile playing a superb shutdown role.

The Power surged in the third term, kicking five goals while the Roos wasted their opportunities to kick 2.8 and trail by 10 points at the last change.

Ranked No.1 in the AFL in fourth quarters, the script appeared clear-cut for Port, but it couldn't muster its usual running power.

Coach Ken Hinkley conceded the Kangaroos had finished stronger and said his players didn't handle the Roos’ pressure.

"Some of their good players stood up and kicked crucial goals when they needed them," Hinkley said.

"It was a really hard contest with a lot of pressure … they were really good in tight and basically got on top of us with their pressure around the ball and kept running to the end."

Midfielders Hamish Hartlett (21 possessions and two goals) and Robbie Gray (24 and seven clearances) led the way for Port Adelaide.

Wingard kicked two goals, but injured his ankle when he was tackled converting the second.

North Melbourne faces the Sydney Swans (SCG), Collingwood (MCG), Fremantle (Patersons Stadium) and Gold Coast (Etihad Stadium) before its round eight bye.

Port Adelaide takes on the Brisbane Lions (Adelaide Oval), West Coast (Patersons Stadium), Geelong (Adelaide Oval) and Greater Western Sydney (Spotless Stadium) over the next month.
