It was a hard-fought contest all night

It was a hard-fought contest all night

A MASTERFUL midfield display by Ollie Wines inspired Port Adelaide to a runaway 38-point victory against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night.

The Power led by just 10 points at three quarter-time but stormed home to win 16.4 (100) to 9.8 (62) at Adelaide Oval.

Port forward Chad Wingard booted three goals, and Jay Schulz and Matthew White two each, in a triumph highlighted by Wines' dominance.

Five talking points: Power v Bulldogs

Wines collected a game-high 33 disposals and kicked a goal, while his teammates Wingard, Robbie Gray (20 touches), Brad Ebert (21 possessions, 12 tackles) and versatile Justin Westhoff were prominent.

Coach Ken Hinkley was pleased with how his side managed to dig in.

"We were able to stay in the game; that's the sort of game that we're able to play that strong four quarters when we're in good nick.

"We haven't been in great form [but] we were able to keep ourselves going tonight and it was a pretty strong performance at the end."

The Bulldogs, now also with five wins and losses, were superbly served by Jack Macrae (31 touches), Koby Stevens (22 possessions) and Luke Dalhaus (20 disposals) while Jake Stringer and Jordan Roughead slotted two goals each.

But after leading midway through the second stanza, the Dogs were held at bay by a Port side which squared its win-loss record at five apiece.

The Bulldogs dominated the opening 10 minutes and registered the initial four scoring shots - but all were points.

GAMEBREAKER: Wingard when it counts

Port then kicked four of the next five goals, including White's brace, before the Bulldogs struck back to be only two points down at quarter-time.

The visitors led midway through the second term when Stringer goaled, but the Power responded with three majors in a row for a 9.3 to 6.5 half-time advantage.

Scoring dried up in a tight third term, the Bulldogs scoring two goals to one to reduce the deficit to 10 points at the last change.

But Port overwhelmed their visitors with a commanding last quarter, unleashing a scoring burst of six unanswered goals to delight the parochial 41,813-strong crowd.

Although pleased with the first three quarters, Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge was ultimately left with an empty feeling.

"Our players were enormous, they persisted, they kept coming at Port when Port threw quite a bit at us," he said.

"We were right in it…[but] we weren't quite capable of pulling it off."
