The siren has sounded to end Q4.

  • Q4 32:34

McCarthy has played well as the substitute today, kicking an equal matchhigh two goals.

  • Q4 12:09

The Bombers have had 10 more inside 50s, 35 more effective kicks, 3 more contested possessions and 49 more uncontested possessions. But it doesn't matter how well you play through the midfield when you only convert 10 per cent of your inside 50s to goals.

GWS kicked away that quarter. The inside 50 count was equal (16 all), but Essendon's woeful conversion rate meant they only kicked a single goal. The Giants took five marks inside 50 and kicked five goals for the quarter.

  • Q3 21:23

The Giants are turning the screws here. They have kicked three goals this quarter, and Essendon's inability to score goals is killing them.

  • Q3 18:01

Since half time, Essendon have had 25 inside 50s but scored just one goal. That's a conversion rate of 4 per cent. They are the worst in the competition for this stat, but across the season they have at least converted 20 per cent of entries into goals!

    GOALGiants (Devon Smith)

  • Q3 13:45

GWS Giants InterchangeCam McCarthy was substituted into the game for Tom Scully (Injured).

  • Q3 11:02

Now it's GWS's turn to be wasteful. They have had the last six inside 50s, and scored just 0.2 (2) from them, with two outof-bounds on the full.

  • Q3 03:48

The Bombers have come out after half time looking sharp again, but can't seem to punish the Giants. They have had five inside 50s to GWS's one, but kicked just 0.1 (1) so far this quarter.

  • Q2 25:46

The siren has sounded to end Q2.

  • Q2 25:46

The Bombers could almost have iced the game in that quarter, but they scored just 1.2 (8) from their six shots at goal, which included three outof-bounds on the full.

  • Q2 25:46

Essendon are looking better in general play, though. They are up in effective kicks 88 to 57, clearances 15 to 10, contested possessions 53 to 40 and uncontested possessions 148 to 95, disposals 203 o 137 and inside 50s 29 to 17.

  • Q2 22:08

Cooney has had two shots on goal this quarter, and put them both out of bounds on the full.

  • Q2 19:28

    BEHINDBombers (Shaun Edwards)

  • Q2 19:28

Essendon are wasting their chances here. They have had two very gettable set shots in the last minute and sprayed both of them. They have had four more inside 50s than the Giants, but kicked just one more behind.

  • Q2 18:17

    BEHINDBombers (Cale Hooker)

  • Q2 17:34

The Bombers have been a touch undisciplined this quarter, giving away six free kicks. The Bombers have received just one.

  • Q2 13:19

GWS break a bit of a deadlock by kicking the second goal of the quarter. Both teams are pushing numbers back, so the ball is moving pretty slowly. There have been 93 uncontested marks in the game already.

    BEHINDGiants (Rushed)

  • Q2 08:06

    GOALBombers (Ben Howlett)

  • Q1 17:37

Essendon are looking dangerous here. They have turned 10 inside 50s into 3.2 (20), which isn't bad for the worst team in the league for inside 50 conversion (they have kicked goals from just 20 per cent of inside 50s this season, ranked 18th in the AFL).

Rhys Palmer celebrates a goal as the Giants pull away from the Bombers

GREATER Western Sydney has kept its bid for a maiden finals berth alive with an unconvincing 32-point win over Essendon.

While the Bombers had more possessions, took more marks and had the best of the clearances, it was the Giants who emerged victorious 14.9 (93)-8.13 (61) in front of 10,093 fans at Spotless Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result lifts GWS to a 10-8 win-loss record, half a game behind Adelaide and Geelong in ninth and eighth spot, respectively, with four matches to go.

GWS coach Leon Cameron said it was pleasing the side was able to secure the four premiership points despite not playing at their best level.

"That was a pleasing thing, the side's found a way to win when they weren't going as well as they should have been," Cameron told reporters after the match.

"We are still in the hunt.

"If you're good enough you make it, if you're not you don't."

Five talking points: Greater Western Sydney v Essendon

However, the win may have come at a cost with Tom Scully substituted in the third term with what looked like a shoulder injury.

And late in the match Stephen Coniglio was felled from a centre-square incident involving Essendon's Adam Cooney who was reported for the clash. While Coniglio was able to walk off the ground, he was in the hands of trainers and looked somewhat distressed on the bench.

A 20-minute burst in the third term broke the game open and paved the way for the Giants to post their first win in club history over Essendon.

Josh Kelly (22 possessions and two goals) and Toby Greene (31 touches) were among the best for the Giants. Jeremy Cameron, substitute Cam McCarthy and Devon Smith also booted two goals for the victors.

It was Essendon dictating terms in the first half, with the visitors extending a seven-point quarter-time advantage to eight points at the main break

Despite having plenty to play for, it was an uninspiring effort early from the Giants as they struggled to find ways through a determined Essendon outfit that was content to have plenty of numbers behind the footy in a bid to restrict opportunities for Cameron and teammate Jonathon Patton.

SHOWREEL: Patton's successful return

Having said that, the Bombers too lacked cohesion when they ventured forward, resulting in a lot of the play taking place between the two 50m arcs for large portions of the match.

The match went goalless for almost half an hour from Smith's free kick at the 13-minute mark of the second term to teammate Kelly's set shot after almost 13 minutes of play in the third quarter.

Kelly's third-quarter effort sparked the Giants into action, with the home side piling on three more goals before three-quarter time, to lead by 16-points at the last change.

The AFL's newest club then kicked away in the final term to keep its September hopes alive, with matches against Port Adelaide, cross-town rivals Sydney Swans, Carlton and Melbourne to conclude the home-and-away rounds.

Essendon coach James Hird lamented the poor ball movement and wasteful shots at goal in the second term.

"We didn't capitalise when we had the game sort of on our terms in the second quarter," Hird told reporters after the match.

"When you don't kick straight or you don't use the ball well in that last kick then it really hurts you."

Patton, who was making his comeback to the AFL after his second knee reconstruction, almost had the perfect start when he marked in front of James Gwilt inside the first 30 seconds. Unfortunately for the 2011 number one draft selection, his set shot missed for a behind.

The 22-year-old ended a quiet day with nine touches and no goals, while Gwilt did very well to run off Patton to gather 20 possessions and offer the Bombers some run out of the backline before hurting his groin in the third term.

Essendon, which falls to 5-13 after the loss, hosts Adelaide next weekend.

Jonathon Patton's return, while quiet, capped off a good day for the Giants. Picture: AFL Media
